History Society Trip to Prague and Vienna, 2018
History Society trip to Prague and Vienna, 2018 As one of the Trip Officers for the Edinburgh University History Society, Student Ambassador Carmen was responsible for organising a trip to Budapest and Vienna for 40 society members during Innovative Learning Week. While we were only away for 5 days, it felt like ages because we did so much in both cities! – Carmen Day 1: Monday, 19th of February Our flight to Budapest was extremely early – but this meant we got there really early too, giving us plenty of time to get our bearings! While the sky was blue, it was freezing cold as we walked around streets on the Pest side of the city, taking in the amazing views of Liberty Square & Parliament Square. After giving everyone a few hours to have dinner (and a nap after a long day of travelling!), we met up again to see the iconic Hungarian Parliament building light up at night. Here, we were able to get a big group photo, before running off to take some night shots of the stunning view over the River Danube! Day 2: Tuesday, 20th of February On our second day, we walked along the Széchenyi Chain Bridge (covered in snow!) to go across the Danube to Buda Castle. Using our trusty Budapest Cards, we were able to get a free Castle bus that took us outside the building – a lifesaver considering it was a very uphill walk! Some of our group were lucky enough to see the changing of the guard at the Sándor Palace, the residence of the Hungarian President. -

GA2015 2Nd Announement.Pdf
We are delighted to invite you to the 63rd International Congress and Annual Meeting of the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research (GA). The conference covers natural product research from phytochemical studies to phytotherapeutic applications. The aim of the congress is to serve as a forum for discussions on trends, and the latest results, and to exchange ideas relating to phytochemical analysis, ethnopharmacology and phytopharmacology. The scientific program will include plenary lectures by invited speakers, and keynote talks on recent topics of natural product research, as well as contributed lectures and poster presentations. Parallel sessions will allow an appreciable number of participants to present results in oral talks. The poster sessions at central time frames within the congress will also provide an opportunity for scientific discussions. The conference will be accompanied by two workshops, one providing a forum for young researhers and the other for in-depth insight of regulatory affairs of medicinal plant products. Budapest, a European metropolis with its vibrant cultural life, is the academic center of the country. As a participant of the GA Conference, you will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the monuments of the historical past of the city and discover its present with spas, restaurants and contemporary museums. The selected venue of the event, the Budapest Congress Center, is a perfect setting for the organization of an enjoyable and fruitful scientific meeting. On the last day of the Conference, participants can choose from two alternative excursions, all of which offer unforgettable experiences for participants and accompanying persons. The Monastery at Pannonhalma, an ancient historic monument, a UNESCO world heritage site, is one of the cradles of medicinal plant cultivation in Hungary. -

Nemzetközi Szimpóziuma 8th International Symposium of Hungarian Researchers on Computational Intelligence and Informatics Biomedical Engineering Education and Research in Hungary Zoltán Benyó Department of Control Engineering and Information Technology, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, Budapest University of Technology and Economics Magyar tudósok krt. 2, H-1117 Budapest, Hungary [email protected] Abstract: Biomedical Engineering is a relatively new interdisciplinary science. This paper presents the biomedical engineering activity, which is carried out at Budapest University of Technology and Economics and its partner institutes. In the first part the main goals and the curriculum of the Biomedical Engineering Education Program (BMEEP) is presented. The second part of the paper summarizes the most important biomedical engineering researches carried out mostly in the Biomedical Engineering Laboratory of our university. Keywords: education, biomedical systems, physiological models, image analysis, signal processing, detection algorithms 1 Introduction Biomedical engineering education in Hungary started in 1995, after a comprehensive investigation of similar European programs [1], as a joint program of three universities: Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Semmelweis University of Medicine, and University of Veterinary Sciences. It is the first high-level comprehensive education form in Hungary, that grants an MSc Biomedical Engineer diploma. Over 150 students have already completed their -
Phd Scientific Meeting 2016 | Abstract Book
PhD Scientific Meeting 2016 | Abstract book Clinical Medicine I A NOVEL CELLULAR MODEL FOR FUNCTIONAL STUDIES OF pH REGULATION AND ELECTROLITE TRANSPORT MECHANISMS IN AMELOGENESIS Rácz, Róbert Róbert Rácz, Erzsébet Bori, Gábor Varga Department of Oral Biology, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary Introduction During amelogenesis, the formation of hydroxylapatite crystals liberates a large number of protons that requires buffering, presumably by secretion of bicarbonate. No functional data exist for mineral ion transport by ameloblasts. Therefore, we developed a novel cellular model to investigate these mechanisms, using the HAT-7 rat ameloblast cell line. Aim Our aims were to provide functional evidence for the role of several key transporters in pH regulation in HAT-7 cells and to test whether cells achieve transepithelial bicarbonate transport in our model. We investigated which signaling pathway plays a role in the regulation of this mechanism and also whether fluoride exposure can disturb this process. Methods To gain monolayers, HAT-7 cells were seeded on Transwell permeable filters and cultured in differentiation medium for 4 days. We monitored transepithelial resistance as an indicator of tight junction formation and polarization. We evaluated intracellular pH changes by microfluorometry using BCECF fluorescent indicator. The activity of transporters was tested by withdrawal of various ions from outer solutions, and by using specific inhibitors and modulating agents. Results We detected sodium/proton-exchanger, anion-exchanger and sodium/potassium/chloride- cotransporter activity at the basolateral side of HAT-7 cells. Measurements of transepithelial bicarbonate transport showed a significant increase in response to Ca2+- and cAMP-mobilizing stimuli (ATP and forskolin). We could not detect significant alteration in bicarbonate secretion upon acute fluoride exposure in this setting, although 1 mM fluoride induced substantial cell death when applied for at least 24h. -
