Mrs Sonia Gandhi, who is also President of All India Congress Committee, was speaking at a function where Union Communication and Information Technology Minister, Mr Kapil Sibal released a commemorative postage stamp on veteran freedom fighter and member of Constituent Assembly, Ch. Ranbir Singh on his death anniversary, in New Delhi today. The first set of the postage stamp was presented to Mrs Sonia Gandhi by Mr Sibal. Mrs Sonia Gandhi said that while remembering our freedom fighters, we must keep in mind that had they indulged in personal gains and greed, they would have not been able to do anything for the freedom of the country. She said that the meaning of public life was to understand the privations of a common man and strive to provide him succor. She said that we should fight against the manner in which attempts were being made to damage our society with the venom of terrorism, communalism and casteism. She said that we must try to provide good education to youth and generate new employment opportunities for them. We should rededicate ourselves for the welfare of the poor and the weak by shunning our personal interests. She described the farmer as the soul of the village and the nation and said that we must discharge our duties with affection and also by becoming sensitive towards them. By doing so, we could educate future generations and hand them over something good. Mrs Gandhi said that Ch. Ranbir Singh was 64 when he quit active politics and dedicated his life for the service of the freedom fighters and social work. Today, such ideals hold great meaning when we see people blindly running after wealth and high office. While paying rich tributes to Ch. Ranbir Singh, she said that he belonged to the generation, which was conscious of getting freedom for the country. His father Ch. Matu Ram himself was a nationalist and a freedom fighter. That’s why he had relations with patriots like Lala Lajpat Rai, Sardar Ajit Singh and Swami Shraddhanand. When Mahatma Gandhi visited Rohtak in 1921, at that time the meeting was presided over by Ch. Matu Ram, the father of Ch. Ranbir Singh. Ch. Ranbir Singh was born in such environment and participated in the freedom struggle of the country and had to bear miseries in different jails for the freedom of the country. This was like taking ahead the tradition of his family. Mrs Gandhi said that she was happy that the Department of Posts decided to release a commemorative postage stamp on Ch. Ranbir Singh. When we remember such personalities, we do something for ourselves. We are indebted to their sacrifice made for the country and the society. He remained a member of the Constituent Assembly, Provisional Parliament, Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Punjab and Haryana Assemblies and also a Minister. She said that five years ago she had released an Abhinandan Granthon Ch. Ranbir Singh and at that time, he was present on the occasion. He was the only surviving member of the Constituent Assembly. She said that at that time, at the age of 90, he stood up and expressed his views and that was a pleasing experience. Union Minister, Mr Kapil Sibal said that the Department of Communication was proud of having released a commemorative postage stamp on Ch. Ranbir Singh. He said that Ch. Ranbir Singh was a man of farsightedness, an eminent freedom fighter, a great patriot, able administrator and an ace Parliamentarian. Throughout his life, he followed the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, who propagated the message that true Swaraj could be established only by serving the villages and their residents. He worked for the welfare of farmers, labourers and backward sections of the society. The Bhakra Dam project was completed during his times when he was Irrigation and Power Minister of Punjab. The President of All India Freedom Fighters Association, Capt. Ranjit Singh appreciated the decision of the Department of Posts to release a commemorative postage stamp on Ch. Ranbir Singh adding that it has kept in high esteem the contribution of Ch. Ranbir Singh in the freedom struggle of the www.internationalnewsandviews.com country. He also urged that the families of freedom fighters should be declared as national families. Those present on the occasion included Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Incharge, Haryana Affairs of Congress Party, Mr Oscar Fernandes, Union Minister of State for Communication, Mr Sachin Pilot, Union Minister of State, Mr Mahadev Singh Khandela, Speaker, Delhi Assembly, Mr Yoganand Shastri, senior Congress leader, Mr Janardan Dwivedi, President, Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, Mr Phool Chand Mullana, MPs namely Dr Ram Parkash, Mr Narender, Jyoti Mirdha, Mr Deepender Singh Hooda, Rao Inderjit Singh, Mr Avtar Singh Bhadana, Dr Arvind Sharma, Mr Ashk Ali Tak, Haryana Ministers namely Capt.
