Two former Soviet republics meet for the first time in a competitive game in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group G, with past meetings between Russian and Moldovan clubs suggesting a tight encounter. Match background • The sides' only previous senior encounter was a friendly at Republika Stadium in Chisinau on 4 June 2000, which Russia won 1-0, Maxim Buznikin scoring the only goal on 14 minutes – it was the first of the striker's five goals in eight appearances for Russia. • The nations have met in seven UEFA age-group competitions, with Moldova's record W0 D1 L6. That one draw came in their most recent encounter, a UEFA European Under-21 Championship meeting in Yekaterinburg on 10 September 2012 which ended 2-2. Russia were on target for a 2-1 win, Maxim Grigorev (74) and Fedor Smolov (81) having responded to a 43rd-minute opener from Anatoli Cheptine, but Ion Jardan levelled two minutes into added time. • All four of the meetings between the nations' clubs in UEFA competitions have ended in draws; FC Spartak Moskva eliminated FC Sheriff on away goals in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round, drawing 1-1 in Tiraspol and 0-0 in Moscow. More recently, FC Anji Makhachkhala drew 0-0 with Sheriff in Tiraspol and 0-0 in Ramenskoye in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League group stage. • Alexandr Curteian, who took over as Moldova coach on 24 September, won the with FC Zenit in 1999.

5 Russia - Moldova Sunday 12 October 2014 - 18.00CET (20.00 local time) Match press kit Stadion Spartak, Moscow Head coach Fabio Capello Date of birth: 18 June 1946 Nationality: Italian Playing career: Spal 1907, AS Roma, Juventus, AC Milan Coaching career: AC Milan (twice), Real Madrid CF (twice), AS Roma, Juventus, England, Russia • Forged a successful playing career, winning four Serie A titles – three with Juventus, one with Milan – and scoring eight goals from midfield in 32 games for Italy, including the winner in the Azzurri's first victory over England at Wembley in November 1973. • Despite lacking coaching experience Capello replaced Arrigo Sacchi at Milan in 1991, launching a hugely impressive five-year spell in which he led a star-studded team to four Italian championships – the first without losing a match – and the 1994 UEFA Champions League, beating Johan Cruyff's FC Barcelona 4-0 in the final. • Left Milan for Real Madrid and lifted the Spanish title in his only season there before an unsuccessful return to Milan. Re-established himself as one of world's foremost coaches at both Roma, where he won the 2000/01 Scudetto, and Juventus, where he ended each of his two campaigns as Serie A champion – only for both titles to be revoked as a result of the sporting fraud scandal. • Another one-year Liga title-winning effort at Madrid (a decade after the first) prompted the Football Association (FA) to appoint him England coach. Took over in January 2008 and steered the side to the 2010 FIFA World Cup with eight straight victories. Stayed on for UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying despite failing to progress beyond the last 16 in South Africa and guided his charges to the finals in Poland and Ukraine. • Stood down from England in February 2012, less than four months before UEFA EURO 2012, but the following summer took the Russia job and led them to the 2014 World Cup, where they failed to progress beyond the group stage. Signed a contract extension in January 2014 to remain in charge until after the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Alexandr Curteian Date of birth: 11 February 1974 Nationality: Moldovan Playing career: FC Zimbru Chisinau, RTS Widzew Łódź, FC Zenit, Hamburger SV, FC Torpedo Moskva, Moldova Coaching career: FC Zimbru Chisinau, FC Smena-Zenit (assistant), Moldova (assistant), Moldova Under-21s, Moldova • A product of the Zimbru youth academy, Curteian won five league titles with the club as a player. In 1993 and 1998 he was named Moldova's best player; he scored twice in 38 appearances for the national team. • A creative midfielder, Curteian won the Polish league title with Widzew in 1996/97 and later claimed the Russian Cup with Zenit. He is one of only two Moldovan players to have featured in the Bundesliga. • Following the end of his playing career, Curteian held a number of administrative posts at Zimbru before taking to the dugout in 2007. He immediately guided them to Moldovan Cup success. • In 2009, he joined the Smena-Zenit coaching team and a year later became assistant to Moldova coach Gabi Balint. • Curteian started working with the Moldova U21s in October 2011 and his team finished third in their qualifying group for the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He replaced Ion Caras at the senior team helm in September 2014.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
