REN 11/18-SW MV REEF ENDEAVOUR From Humble Beginnings

From very humble beginnings, Australia and New Zealand can now offer some of the best wines found anywhere in the world.

Captain Arthur Phillip, Commander of the First Fleet and first Governor introduced both convicts and grapevines to Australia in 1788. The origi- nal vines however fell victim to neglect and disease. It was not until 1791, when Phillip, resolve strengthened after this initial setback, produced Australia’s first wine from three acres of vines planted along the Parramatta River, near Sydney.

The mid 1800’s were a golden age for wine development in Australia. A number of large vignerons were built in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. entered the international limelight, St. Huberts taking a Grand Prix award at the Paris Exposition in the 1880’s. Australia’s reputation was growing.

The Australian wine industry however had to suffer a great deal to reach its cur- rent heights. In the late 1880’s disaster struck. Vigorous over production pushed he price down and a devastating vine louse disease was unwittingly introduced to Australia from Europe. A very large percentage of the industry was decimated.

By the turn of the century most Australian table wines were of an indifferent quali- ty. Australia was a nation of beer drinkers to whom wine was a torrid affair; rough and sweet, and much was exported to England. Marketed under names like Emu Burgundy, Kangarouge and Wallaby White. Looking now at the Australian wines so popular internationally, the efforts of today’s Australian wine makers can be loudly applauded.

Today, Australia is ranked as the world’s seventh largest wine producer, and the finest Australian wines are among the best in the world—a judgment that is consist- ently reinforced at international wine shows.

The New Zealand wine industry has seen a more rapid development. Grapevines were first planted in New Zealand around 1819, but for the next 160 years noth- ing much happened. Then, around thirty years ago, New Zealand suddenly start- ed making wine that caused an explosion in local demand and began to raise eye- brows in other countries. Between 1973 and 1983 wine production grew by a staggering 350% - a higher rate of growth than any other wine making country during hat period.

Now the world has discovered what New Zealand wine drinkers discovered twenty five years ago—that New Zealand wine is exciting to drink and is different from wine made anywhere else in the world.
