A Roxbury Review: Conglomerates of Greater Boston

Grunow, Byrd Polar Research Center, Ohio State University INTRODUCTION Conglomerate throughout the Boston Basin in eastern Massachusetts (Fig. 1) has long been called after the Roxbury district of Boston (early references in Holmes, 1859 and Shaler, 1869) and subdivided into three members typified by strata in the encircling communities of Brookline, Dorchester and the Squantum section of Quincy, MA (Emerson, 1917). NEIGC field trips, beginning with one led by W.O. Crosby in 1905, and also GSA-related field trips have provided regular opportunities for generations of geologists to debate the depositional settings of all of these rocks, particularly the possible glacial origin of the Squantum "Tillite". It appears, however, that none of these outings has ever included a stop in Roxbury itself (Table I and lettered localities in Fig. 1). A main purpose of this trip will be to visit the nominal Roxbury type locality in a section of the historic quarries where recent re-development includes the newly opened Puddingstone Park. Other stops will permit comparison of type Roxbury Conglomerate with other rocks traditionally assigned to this formation and highlight geochronological and paleomagnetic data bearing on the ages of these units. Heritage landscapes are those places that are created by human interaction with the natural environment. They are dynamic and evolving; they reflect the history of the community and provide a sense of place; they show the natural ecology that influenced the land use in a community; and heritage landscapes often have scenic qualities. This wealth of landscapes is central to each community’s character; yet heritage landscapes are vulnerable and ever changing. For this reason it is important to take the first steps toward their preservation by identifying those landscapes that are particularly valued by the community – a favorite local farm, a distinctive neighborhood or mill village, a unique natural feature, an inland river corridor or the rocky coast. To this end, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and the Essex National Heritage Commission (ENHC) have collaborated to bring the Heritage Landscape Inventory program (HLI) to communities in Essex County. -

[email protected] NITROGEN-REMOVAL SERVICES OF RESTORED SALT MARSHES IN JAMAICA BAY (NEW YORK, NY) Coastal wetlands are important sites of nitrogen removal, a critical ecosystem service in highly eutrophic environments. In Jamaica Bay, over 92% of historic wetland area has been lost over the past century. Despite considerable efforts to restore wetland ecosystems in Jamaica Bay and throughout New York City, few studies have examined the value of ecosystem services used to justify their cost, and little is known about the ecological mechanisms contributing to the success or failure of reconstruction. Past and ongoing restoration efforts in Jamaica Bay provide a unique opportunity to study nitrogen-removal ecosystem services in natural and restored wetlands in an urban, eutrophic environment. In collaboration with researchers from several institutions, we are using a chronosequence of marsh restorations to assess how marsh vegetation, sediment characteristics, and key processes of the nitrogen cycle develop over time following restoration. The goal of our project is to determine the restoration age and environmental conditions under which salt-marsh restoration will effectively provide ecosystem services such as nitrogen removal. We employ a combination of flow-through incubation, field survey, and experimental methods to identify the key biological and abiotic factors limiting nitrogen-removal services in natural and restored marshes. -

Temporary dewatering is planned in support of the construction of the proposed Residences at Morrissey Boulevard in Dorchester, Massachusetts, as shown on Figure 1, Project Locus. We anticipate construction dewatering will be conducted, as necessary, during below grade excavation and planned construction. The site is bounded to the north by the JFK/UMass MBTA red line station, to the east by William T. Morrissey Boulevard, to the south by paved parking associated with Shaw’s Supermarket, beyond which lies the Shaw’s Supermarket, and to the west by MBTA railroad tracks and the elevated I-93 (Southeast Expressway). -
Underwater Pipelines
How does liquid sludge get from Winthrop to Quincy for dewatering, drying and conversion to Class A biosolids? The MWRA Deer Island Treatment Plant ("DITP") is located near Winthrop, Massachusetts, and the Biosolids Processing Facility ("BPF") is located in Quincy, a distance of approximately 7 miles. In the early years of the BPF project, liquid sludge was loaded at DITP onto barges that NEFCO towed across Boston Harbor to Quincy. The barges served from 1991 through 2005. BPF wastewater, consisting principally of dewatering effluent (centrate) flowed through local sewers to an aging primary treatment plant at Nut Island, also in Quincy. As MWRA’s Boston Harbor Cleanup project progressed, underground sludge pipelines to the BPF were constructed in two phases. The sludge pipes were included in two wastewater tunnel projects. Wastewater was routed from new headworks at Nut Island to a new pump station at DITP. The five- mile-long, deep rock Inter-Island Tunnel was constructed to carry this wastewater. When this tunnel was constructed, dual 14 inch pipes were cast into its concrete lining to convey liquid sludge in the reverse direction. This tunnel and the twin sludge pipelines were completed in 1998. The history of the MWRA sewer system can be found on the MWRA web site: http://www.mwra.state.ma.us/03sewer/html/sewhist.htm The next phase of sludge piping was as part of the Braintree-Weymouth Interceptor project. This tunnel carries sewage towards Nut Island and ultimately to DITP. The project also extended the twin sludge pipelines to the Braintree-Weymouth pump station. -

Smelt deposited eggs primarily in the Monatiquot River, upstream of Route 53, over a stretch of river habitat that exceeded 900 m and included over 8,000 m2 of suitable spawning substrate. Minor amounts of egg deposition were found in Smelt Brook, primarily located below the Old Colony railroad embankment where a 6 ft culvert opens to an intertidal channel. The Smelt Brook spawning habitat is degraded by exposure to chronic stormwater inputs, periodic raw sewer discharges and modified stream hydrology. Overall, the entire Weymouth-Fore River system supports one of the larger smelt runs in Massachusetts Bay, with approximately 10,000 m2 of available spawning substrate. -
