IN BRIEF FOUNDING South Coast Repertory is a professional resident theatre founded in 1964 by David Emmes and Martin Benson. VISION Creating the finest theatre in America. LEADERSHIP SCR is led by Artistic Director David Ivers and Managing Director Paula Tomei. Its 33-member Board of Trustees is made up of community leaders from business, civic and arts backgrounds. In addition, hundreds of volunteers assist the theatre in reaching its goals, and about 2,000 individuals and businesses contribute each year to SCR’s annual and endowment funds. MISSION South Coast Repertory was founded in the belief that theatre is an art form with a unique power to illuminate the human experience. We commit ourselves to exploring urgent human and social issues of our time, and to merging literature, design, and performance in ways that test the bounds of theatre’s artistic possibilities. We undertake to advance the art of theatre in the service of our community, and aim to extend that service through educational, intercultural, and community engagement programs that harmonize with our artistic mission. FACILITY/ The David Emmes/Martin Benson Theatre Center is a three-theatre complex. Prior to the pandemic, there were six SEASON annual productions on the 507-seat Segerstrom Stage, four on the 336-seat Julianne Argyros Stage, with numerous workshops and theatre conservatory performances held in the 94-seat Nicholas Studio. In addition, the three-play family series, “Theatre for Young Audiences,” produced on the Julianne Argyros Stage. The 20-21 season includes two virtual offerings and a new outdoors initiative, OUTSIDE SCR, which will feature two productions in rotating rep at the Mission San Juan Capistrano in July 2021. -

This dissertation is the first comprehensive chronicle and study of the LTC, reviewing the movement’s methods, manifestations, and implications through interviews with key participants and my own reflections as a founding Steering Committee member, balanced against theories of Latinx feminisms, the Commons, and Latin American decolonization. -

The production, directed by Lisa Portes, premieres on Friday, April 18, and runs through Sunday, April 27, 2014. Performances are Wednesdays through Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2 PM. There is a 2 PM matinee performance on Saturday, April 19th, and there is no performance on Sunday, April 20. Previews are on April 16 and 17, at 7:30 PM. About the play: Sometime, in Purgatory. Judas gets his day in court, and biblical archetypes join legal eagles to make the case with hip-hop and street talk in this outrageous and provocative play about the paradox of faith, free will, and the nature of divine love. A contemporary philosophical look at what might be the most famous betrayal; The Last Days of Judas Iscariot poses questions about the limit to forgiveness. This production is recommended for mature audiences. Tickets are $15, preview tickets are $10, and student tickets are always $5. A commons by and for people who make performance. #LTCCarnaval July 23-25 2015 2 A NOTE FROM Lisa Portes I cut my teeth at the Hispanic Playwrights Project (HPP) at South Coast Rep. Founded by José Cruz González in the early 1980s, this annual festival of new Latina/o plays served as a nexus for the Latina/o theatremaking community and a hotbed of talent for those artistic directors and literary managers looking for new Latina/o work. Later, Juliette Carrillo became Artistic Director and with her keen sense of language and theatricality brought in some of the most exciting writers in the country—not simply the most exciting Latina/o writers, but the most exciting writers period. Karen Zacarías was the first playwright with whom I had the honor of working. Over the next five years at HPP I met and fell in love with the work of Luis Alfaro, Cusi Cram, José Rivera, Nilo Cruz, Anne García-Romero, Elaine Romero, Rogelio Martinez, Caridad Svich, Alejandro Morales, and many more.
