Printed in the U.S.A. DEAR PATRONS © Carter Rose Welcome to “a world of pure imagination” — the Winspear Opera House, where we’re proud to present Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the final show of the AT&T Performing Arts Center’s 10th season of Broadway. The new season will begin in November with Once, followed by Once On This Island in December, then in 2020 The Color Purple, Blue Man Group, The Band’s Visit, An American in Paris, Bandstand, and The SpongeBob Musical! All of this will happen right here in the beautiful Winspear Opera House. The 2019/2020 season is our first in partnership with Dallas Summer Musicals, providing even more opportunities for North Texas audiences to enjoy the best of Broadway. Both organizations are presenting amazing seasons, and some DSM shows will be presented here in the Winspear Opera House. In the upcoming season, The Band’s Visit and Blue Man Group (an optional add-on) are part of this collaboration. And season subscribers at both organizations receive presale access to shows in both seasons! And the AT&T Performing Arts Center is more than Broadway. We present concerts, like Paul Anka who will be here in just a few weeks; and the finest dance companies in the world with our partner TITAS/Dance Unbound, like Ronald K. Brown who will be here later this month. We provide stages for our five esteemed resident companies: Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, The Dallas Opera, Dallas Theater Center and Texas Ballet Theater. And through our Elevator Project we present the best of new and emerging Dallas arts groups. If you’ve joined us since we opened in 2009, you probably know that the AT&T Performing Arts Center is more than great shows. For many students in this community, our education programs can be the beginning of a lifetime love of culture, or even a career in the arts. Our many community engagement initiatives are introducing more people to the arts. By being a member, donor, or a patron at the Center, you’re helping us share experiences like these. Thank you for being part of the team. But right now enjoy Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and we’ll see you again soon! • Dissertation Final Corrected
FROM PENCIL TO PERFORMANCE: The creative nexus of arranging, orchestration and music direction in works of contemporary pop/rock musical theatre BRYAN SCHIMMEL 8300995 A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Humanities University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Music Final Corrected Submission 22 September 2014 ABSTRACT In the art form of musical theatre, available literature on the creative musical aspects of musicals has focused primarily on the composers and/or lyricists; their works having been extensively analysed and documented. There is, however, comparatively less literature and documentation on the processes that guide the transformation of the theatre composer’s work to an eventual performance embracing arranging, orchestration and music direction. This dissertation explores these practices from two perspectives – the creative and the recreative. First, from the creative perspective, I challenge Joseph P. Swain who makes a compelling case for composition as a tool of dramaturgy in his book The Broadway Musical: A Critical and Musical Survey (2002). I contest that his argument cannot hold true for pop/rock musicals in which the scores are comprised of pre-existing popular music that was not originally or intentionally composed for the stage. In order to understand how music functions as a dramatic element in musical theatre, it must follow that all collaborative creative forces that contribute to this music must be evaluated in a holistic manner. Dramaturgy contextualises and elucidates storytelling and artistic vision. While Swain has postulated that composition is an element of dramaturgy, I offer the notion that since arranging and orchestration contextualise and elucidate the composition they therefore cannot be excluded as dramaturgical devices.

By LAUREN GARFINKEL Art by LAUREN GARFINKEL Who can take tomorrow Dip it in a dream Separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream? The Candy Man —”The Candy Man” by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory tells the story a boy whose golden ticket http://luckypeach.com/the-candy-man/ Page 1 of 2 Trump The Candy Man - Lucky Peach 4/11/17, 1046 AM earns he and his grandpa a magical day inside the confectionary utopia of Willy Wonka. Willy Wonka is a larger than life, if socially challenged, businessman. His workplace is lavishly decorated. He wears a conspicuous hat. He invites children to witness his presentations, then asks them to leave when they misbehave. I’ve been thinking about Willy Wonka a lot while following the campaign of Donald Trump. Like Wonka, Trump exists in a world of pure imagination. On the campaign trail, America’s would-be sugar daddy has made some whoppers of pledges— from tearing up trade deals to strong-arming NATO to enacting massive tax cuts, all the while improving our way of life, should he be elected in November. Trump’s signature campaign promise has been to build a wall to keep away illegal Mexican immigrants, whom he has described as “criminals, drug dealers, rapists.” In his opening speech as candidate for president on June 16, 2015, he said, “I would build a great wall.
