To all my relations. v ABSTRACT For American Indians, education was the weapon of mass destruction. It obliterated their Indigenous identities, destroyed their families, culture, and traditional ways of life. The history of violence and genocide inflicted upon America’s Indigenous peoples have continued to cause adverse psychological and physical effects. Native American students are underachieving and have the lowest graduation rates of all racial ethnic groups. The central research question for this qualitative study is how does intergenerational historical trauma impact the educational journeys of Puyallup tribal members? The goal of this study was to provide insights into the impact of intergenerational historical trauma upon eight Puyallup tribal elders and to discover possible relationships with their educational journeys and life choices. This study utilized the research strategy of phenomenological oral history. The use of this approach is culturally compatible and thus would be considered honorable within our culture. The findings indicated that three of the elders who received educational encouragement during their life were the only ones who studied beyond high school. The three who did not receive encouragement dropped out of high school. Two elders spent their careers working in Indian Education and they suggested what elements should comprise a tribal school staff development training program focused on teaching about the importance of culture and the intergenerational effect of historical trauma upon our students, families, elders, and ancestors. COLUMBIA The Magazine of Northwest History, Summer 2005: Vol. 19, No. 2 Edited and with an introduction by Cary C. Collins, compiled by Oscar H. Jones Pathbreakers can emerge from collisions between seemingly opposing societies. These rare persons transcend their own circumstances to grasp the advantages and opportunities brought forth by the transforming encounter. Historian Margaret Connell Szasz has described these individuals as "cultural brokers," those who step confidently between divergent worlds, integrating the cultures and values of both. Puyallup tribal leader Henry Sicade may never have perceived of himself as a cultural broker, but he filled that role in many ways. Sicade was born in 1866, only a decade following the negotiation of the treaties of land cession that so irrevocably altered the course of Indian history in the Pacific Northwest. His life spanned the years of settlement and assimilation. Despite the obstacles that confronted him as an Indian living in the early 20th century, Sicade managed to embrace aspects of non-Indian culture and still retain his Puyallup identity. He aggressively and successfully utilized American institutions as a vehicle to propel himself, his family, and his tribe toward a better life while at the same time preserving and strengthening the cultural traditions of the Puyallup people. In 1873, just before his seventh birthday, Sicade enrolled in the Puyallup Indian School at Fife, near Tacoma. Seven years later he transferred to the first off-reservation boarding school west of the Mississippi, the Forest Grove Indian and Industrial Training School in Forest Grove, Oregon (now the Chemawa Indian School at Salem).

    Voices at Boldt 40 (posted 3/11/14) “They gassed us, clubbed us, dragged us, beat us. Those were hard times,” said Puyallup elder Ramona Bennett, recalling the brutal treatment of tribal fisherman and their families by state enforcement officers during the treaty fishing rights struggle of the 1960s and ‘70s. The struggle led to the landmark 1974 ruling by federal Judge George Boldt in U.S. v. Washington. Boldt’s ruling upheld the treaty-reserved salmon harvest right of the tribes, establishing them as co- managers of the resource and affirming the tribal right to half of the harvestable salmon returning to their historic fishing sites. Tribes gathered in early February (2014) to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Boldt Decision with a daylong symposium looking at the past, present and future of U.S. v. Washington and tribal treaty rights. “This was the same time as the peace strikes and the civil rights movement,” Bennett said. “There was a change going on and we got to be part of that change.” The Fish War of the 1960s and ‘70s was actually the second Treaty War, said Muckleshoot tribal member Gilbert KingGeorge. “Research has shown that families who fought in the second Treaty War are, in most cases, direct descendants of the warriors that fought in the first Treaty War of 1955 to ’56. We won both wars, no matter what they tell you in history.” Muckleshoot elder Leo LaClair recalled helping to get the word out about the treaty fishing rights struggle.
