education & youth development

The focus of conversation, locally and nationally, is how we provide a cradle to career approach to education so that children can continue on a pathway to success. Reports and observations have noted that connecting parents and infants with support services provides a head start on this pathway. A strong community presence and collaboration around student needs continues to address academic and vocational preparedness, retention rates in high school, and higher education, while also emphasizing student achievement and higher levels of parent engagement. As the Santa Barbara Foundation continues to gather information, it is becoming more strategic in meeting the needs of children and their families.

health & human services

Continuing economic challenges and the resulting increase in need, coupled with limited public funding has significantly stretched the county’s safety net. Programs providing nutrition, shelter, and health care continue to experience high sustained demand, while vulnerable populations struggle to make ends meet. In 2012, the foundation recognized this issue by prioritizing funding for organizations that address basic needs. Additionally, efforts to combat homelessness have broadened to include voices across many sectors and communities are mobilizing in new ways to coordinate resources. Since demographic projections show that 25 percent of the county’s population will be over the age of 60 by 2030, living and dying with dignity also continues to be an important area of concern for the foundation.
