He took on the name “Peyo” early in his professional career, based on an English cousin’s mispronunciation of “Pierrot” (a diminutive form of Pierre). After Peyo left school, he looked in the paper for a job. Two caught his eye: – Second level offers for a dental assistant and an illustrator. When he presented himself to the dentist, he was told he was 15 minutes too late! So he went for the other job – and the rest is history. – Third level After Peyo finished his studies at “l’Academie Royale des Beaux Arts de Bruxelles” he started working at a small Belgian animation studio. • Fourth level When the studio folded after the war he went on and made his first comics for the newspaper “La Dernière Heure”. – Fifth level Peyo had his first success in 1952 when he created the characters Johan and Peewit for the children’s comic book “Le Journal de Spirou”. It was in Johan and Peewit’s story “The Six Smurfed Flute” where the first Smurf appeared in 1958. Immediately the Smurfs became very 2 popular and got their own series just a year later. In the early 1960s Peyo hired a number of talented comic artists and started his own studio. 2 3 Smurfette’s Travel Tips (translation of editorial supplied by publicity team - below) A Wizard’s World – Gargamel Interview (translation of editorial supplied by publicity team - below) 1 Fun Facts (translation of material supplied for the GSD 2011) 2 SMURF BLUE: There was no question of decking the Smurfs out in pink: Peyo wanted• to completely differentiate them from human beings. His wife, Nine, who assisted with Click to edit Master text styles colouring his plates, explained, “It was a process of elimination. In the beginning the Smurfs were always hiding amongst the greenery, so I couldn’t make them green or 1 they would have just disappeared into the background. Red, they would have been too visible. Yellow just didn’t work right. That left blue: it wasn’t complicated!” – Second level SMURF MUSIC : “It’s the Smurf, Smurf, Smurf ...Who goes Smurf, Smurf, Smurf...One little Smurf, two little Smurfs, la la la… ” sing the little blue imps as they valiantly work to build their bridge over Smurf River. Already, in their comic strips, the refrains were – Third level omnipresent (from “The Smurfs and the Magic Flute” to the episode entitled “Smurphonie in C”, there are uncounted references to the world of music.) . The passage to cartoon would reinforce this musical dimension: first, with Michel Legrand’s score for the feature film, then with the credits of the television series produced by • Fourth level Hanna-Barbera. And when these series were shown in French version, the famous performer Dorothée would lend her voice to the Smurfs’ songs…with a famous hit as a reward: Peyo would see a platinum disk awarded in France, with more than million 45s sold in the hexagon of France. In the Dutch speaking regions, the singer Petrus Kartner, – Fifth level better known under the pseudonym “Vader Abraham”, relaunched his career in 1978 with the Smurfs’ songs. In the middle of the 1990s, the Smurfs became techno-music stars in Europe. In come countries, such as Norway and Sweden, the number of disks sold equalled a fifth of the national population! In fact, when adding up all of the songs inspired by the Smurfs since 1975 (the year of the original strip “The Smurfs and the Magic Flute”), one arrives at the incredible figure of more than 40 million records and compact disks sold all over the planet! OTHER FUN FACTS: Peyo based the “Smurfberry” on a blueberry // Peyo drew Smurfette over 300 different ways & based her on his wife & daughter // There are 102 Smurfs in the village (100 male Smurfs, one Papa, and one Smurfette). // Smurfs build their mushroom homes, they are not grown // Smurfs are vegetarians // The Smurfs are three apples high, and during rehearsals, each was represented by a “life size” maquette – 7½” tall // When it came time to film, each Smurf would be represented by a different colored dot – the actors would have to remember which dot was which Smurf . • Views, We Study How Preregistration Has Been Used from Its 2005 Inception to the End of 2012
COPYRIGHT PREREGISTRATION: EVIDENCE AND LESSONS FROM THE FIRST SEVEN YEARS, 2005–2012 * ** Dotan Oliar & Nicholas Matich In 2005 Congress created a new copyright formality: preregistration. Preregistration addresses a growing phenomenon in which copyrighted works are leaked to the Internet prior to official release. Preregistering a work allows copyright owners immediate access to courts and an expanded menu of remedies. Based on an originally constructed dataset coupled with user interviews, we study how preregistration has been used from its 2005 inception to the end of 2012. Over 6,000 works have been preregistered in six eligible categories. Several lawsuits were filed in reliance on preregistrations. Most preregistrations are of motion pictures and literary works. Substantial commercial use of the system has been limited to the movie and TV industries. The music, publishing, and computer software industries virtually have not used it in the ordinary course of business. A few particular users have preregistered a great number of works. Different from the use anticipated by Congress, preregistrations were often obtained after infringement (or even a business dispute) had already started. Most preregistrations were made by individual, small-entity, or other one-time users. The Article recommends that: (1) the duration of preregistrations should be limited; and (2) preregistration (and other copyright) fees should vary with entity size. It offers lessons for formalities and copyright reform: (1) Digital-age formalities may not give rise to the distributional concerns that characterized old formalities; (2) newly minted formalities may limit, rather than expand, access to expressive works; (3) the rates of subsequent registration of preregistered works vary across categories and can inform copyright lawmaking; and (4) the Copyright Office’s views may be affected by its institutional interest.

  • The Smurfs Were Communists! by Dave Morgan Okay, I Know It
The Smurfs Were Communists! By Dave Morgan Okay, I know it sounds crazy. I didn't believe it myself at first. Then I started thinking about it, and it starts getting scary. First of all, you must put aside all the media-programmed, propaganda-driven thoughts or irrational fears you might already have about communists. Forget all that big bad Russian stuff that the 80's taught us, that doesn't exist anymore. Think of communism as just a way of life, a social order, an economic standpoint, a lifestyle choice. Take all the visions of sickles and hammers and tanks out of your head for awhile, and then you will be able to see it clearly. First of all, the Smurfs shared everything. The food in the Smurf village was stored away in those mushrooms the minute it was harvested and then equally distributed to all the Smurfs throughout the year. No one "farmer Smurf" sold his crop to a "consumer Smurf," or saw his labor exploited by another. It was understood that the crop was for the entire Smurf population, not for the sale or profit of one Smurf alone. Then there were those jobs each Smurf held. There was Handy Smurf, and Painter Smurf, and Brainy Smurf, etc... Each Smurf had his own specific job and was not allowed to try his hand at any other Smurf's assigned task. There actually was an episode where each Smurf tried to do another one's job, and failed. The moral of the story was apparently "Stick to what you do Best" or to put it another way, stick to what the society has chosen for you, or maybe just "You'll get what you get and like it!" Handy Smurf was always building.
