Sri Tyagaraja is one among the Trinity of South Indian Classical Music, who was born in Thiruvarur and attained Mukthi or Samadhi on the day of Pushya Bahula Panchami, at Thiruvaiyaru, in the year 1847. He has composed a set of 5 compositions, the first one in Samskrta and the rest in Telugu. These compositions are set to the ragas - Nata, Gaula, Arabhi, Varali and Sri and are called the Ghana Raga Pancaratna Keerthana-s. Every year on this Pushya Bahula Panchami day, Tyagaraja Aradhana is observed at Thiruvaiyaru and various other places all over the world.

He was an exceptional artist who was more concerned about the appreciation of his peers and his intimateS learned rasika-s. He used to say ‘that Donald Bradman is a cricketing genius should be certified by Garry Sobers and not by someone else!’ Though he never considered himself to be a big commercial success, his colleagues and even his seniors always admired him and acknowledged that he was a complete musician with special unique talents. More than the general listening public, it was the true experts who appreciated his rare musical gifts and acclaimed him as their musician! He was not a formula musician who sang exactly what the audience expected to hear. With an extraordinary music creativity or manōdharma not only in rāga but also in laya, a unique stylistic presentation of compositions, and a strict adherence to the Carṇāṭic music tradition with a mutual respect and a keen ear for other music traditions, Krishnan achieved to imbibe music in its entirety as a true conscientious artist. Like Ustad Amir Khan of Hindustāni music, Krishnan could ‘blend talent with imagination, intellect with emotion and technique with temperament’. Ramnad Krishnan’s musical background Born to Vaidhyanathan and Brihannayaki in Alapuzha in Kerala in 1918, Krishnan had seven siblings. He used to fondly remember his elder sister who could sing very well. His eldest brother Lakshmi Narayanan, father and guru of the famous violin trio, was a violin vidvān and even to this day, he is remembered in Sri Lanka, as a great music teacher.

Sruti’s principal mission is to promote and present Indian classical music and dance. In addition, SRUTI seeks to educate the Philadelphia community at-large about Indian arts. SRUTI is a volunteer-run organization. Its leadership comprises an elected Board of Directors and several committees. Every year, around 10 or more world class music and dance recitals are presented during the Spring and Fall seasons by SRUTI in the Greater Philadelphia area. SRUTI also collaborates and partners with other presenting organizations like the Painted Bride Arts Center, Kimmel Center for Performing Arts, Annenberg Center at the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, and Montgomery County Community College. SRUTI has received generous grants from private foundations and public organizations including the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Dance Advance and Philadelphia Music Project (funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts) and the Sam Fels Foundation in addition to a loyal and appreciative audience.     SOUTH ASIA RESEARCH, Vol.16, No.2, Autumn 1996 PERFORMING IDENTITIES: TYAGARAJA MUSIC FESTIVALS IN NORTH AMERICA Kathryn Hansen It is 9 a.m. in Cleveland and the beginning of what promises to be an extraordinary event.l Soon the speeches will commence and the governor’s proclamation will be read, declaring April 18 and 19, 1992, as Saint Tyagaraja Days throughout the state of Ohio. But now scores of musicians are coming up and sitting on the carpeted stage. Vocalists and instrumentalists, amateurs and professionals, women and men, old and young crowd together until there is room only in the wings. After a flute prelude, they launch into brisk unison singing, commencing with Jagadanandakaraka, a Sanskrit composition enumerating the 108 names of Lord Rama, composed in the raga Nata. This is followed immediately by three equally wordy but lively, rhythmic pieces set to different ghana (heavy, serious) ragas. The chorus falters a bit on the multiple stanzas of composition number four, Kanakana in raga Varali, musically the most challenging of the pieces, but the leaders at the front pull the laggards along. Endarõ mahanubhavula, a homage in Telugu to all the great souls who have gone before, brings the group singing triumphantly to an end. He was born in 1767 at Tiruvarur to Kakarla Ramabrahma and Sitamma in a Telugu Brahmin family. He was named Tyagaraja after Tyagaraja, the presiding deity of the temple at Tiruvarur. Tyagaraja's paternal grandfather was Giriraja Kavi who was a poet and musician in the Tanjore court. Tyagaraja's maternal grand father was Veena Kalahastayya a veena player. Tyagaraja learned playing veena in his childhood from Kalahastayya. Tyagaraja’s father Rama Brahman was also attached to the court. Tyagaraja began his musical training under Sonti Venkata Ramanayya, a music scholar, at an early age. He felt music was the path to attain God. His objective while practicing music was purely devotional and the technicalities of classical music did not interest him greatly. He also showed flair for composing music and while still in his teens, composed his first song, Namo Namo Raghavayya / नमो नमो राघवय्या, in Desika Todi / देशीक तोड़ी and inscribed it on the walls of the house. Soon after his training Tyagaraja rendered his song, 'Dorakuna Iduvanti Seva / दोराकु ना इदवु नटी सेवा' (Bilahari / बिऱहारी) before a congregation of musicians and poets. In the house of Sonti Venkatasubbiah at Tanjavur and in the presence of 1 samasthanam / समस्थानम artistes, he sang an elaborate raga Kambhoji / काम्िोजी and sang his 'Mari mari nine / मरी मरी नीने' (Adi tala) which moved all present.
