4 First Destination Report - May 2014 Introduction Each year the Career Development Center and Arts & Sciences Career Services surveys seniors from the College of Arts & Sciences regarding their post-graduation plans. The 2014 survey was rewritten upon receiving a new, standardized data collection process administered from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). To view NACE’s standards and protocols report, please follow this link.

The information collected through this project provides valuable insight into the wide variety of opportunities and resources available to graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences (the College), as well as challenges facing current graduates.

Questions about this report can be directed to Joe Lovejoy, Associate Director of Strategic Planning ([email protected]).

5

Survey Overview Methods Overview For the purpose of the first destination survey, graduates of the College were defined as undergraduate students enrolled in a degree program within the College who had applied for May graduation by April 11, 2014, 28 days prior to graduation ceremonies on May 9th. This definition produced a survey panel of 1,898 students.

Data were collected from the class of 2014 using an online survey instrument (Qualtrics). Students were invited to complete the survey through email from the survey instrument and from their academic advisor.

Upon adoption of the NACE data standards, data collection methods were amended to include both primary and secondary sources under the umbrella of “knowledge rate.” In addition to the primary sources, data was collected from parents, faculty, advisors, and social media outlets such as LinkedIn. This expansion of our methods increased our 2013 response rate of 78% to a knowledge rate of 93% for the May 2014 class, resulting in a 15% increase.

Survey Overview 9 Distribution of Post-Graduation Plans The illustration on the adjoining page represents student responses to the primary question of the survey:

“Which of the following best describes your primary status after graduation?”

There were 1,765 student responses to this question, creating the data set for Phase I. An additional 132 participants entered the survey and quit prior to responding to any questions. These students were not included in the data.

Overall, 38.5% (n=677) of students responded that they were employed full-time post-graduation, 26.0% (n=459) were admitted to graduate school, 13.0% (n=230) were seeking employment, and 8.0% (n=141) were not seeking employment or education at the time of survey completion. This data includes information from all phases of data collection. The adjoining diagram represents data from both phases of survey collection, and includes students who responded to the survey at least one time between April 14, 2014, and November 14, 2014.

16 First Destination Report - May 2014 Job Offer Information Job Satisfaction Those students who indicated that they had secured full-time employment were asked to indicate their level of satisfaction with the job they secured. Due to the nature of the Liberal Arts and Sciences degree, it is common for students to enter occupations that are not directly related to their chosen undergraduate course of study. Therefore, satisfaction with job offer is believed to be a more accurate measure of successful placement than the relationship between major and job. The illustration below indicates that 80% of students who secured full-time employment were very satisfied or satisfied with the job offer they accepted.

18 First Destination Report - May 2014 Job Referral The 2014 survey included a question focused on students’ use of job search strategies. Any student reporting that they had successfully secured a full-time position was prompted to respond to the following question: “In the space provided below, please tell us a little bit about how you found this position.” Responses to this question were analyzed and coded based on sets of common response themes. These themes were then organized into a list of categories, which are listed in the table below. Please note that all potentially identifying information was removed from the sample student responses to protect student confidentiality.

Student responses indicated that Online Research and Job Search Engines were the most common tool used to identify employment opportunities. This was closely followed by referrals from friends or family members and general professional networking.

Employment and Graduate School Success Rates 41 Internship Information Internship Information The following survey question was used to gather information on the number of internships completed by graduates. Follow-up questions collected information on internship site, location, and name.

“Think back to your time as an IU student. From the day you took your first class on campus to now, how many internships did you complete? For the purpose of this survey an internship is considered to be any position you held where you worked at least 10 hours a week for at least two consecutive months in a field or industry related to your career interests.”

The illustration below provides an overview of the number of completed internships and internship site locations reported by May 2014 graduates. Survey data indicates that 41% (n=637) of respondents did not complete any internships, and 59% (n=901) of respondents completed at least one internship. Of the internship site and location information 62% (n=834) of internships occurred with organizations within the state of Indiana, 30% (n=396) occurred domestically in states other than Indiana, and 8% (n=104) occurred abroad. 2% 2% Four Five+ Internships Internships 7% n=32 n=27 Three Internships n=105
