Årskrönikan – Svensk Rugby 1932-2007 3 Årskrönikan – Svensk Rugby 1932-2007 4 Swedish Rugby Celebrates 75 Years A great deal has happened during the past 75 years of Swedish Rugby: from its first totte- ring steps in the 1930s to Swedish rugby of today in the 21st century. This Jubilee Magazine will help us retrace the path of our history and highlight some of the more significant events. In it we bring to memory the achievements within the sport, our prominent players and leaders. Above all we once again recall the names of those pioneers whose efforts helped to establish rugby in Sweden in the early days as well as all those enthusiasts who in the intervening years have helped to develop the sport to further levels. We are proud to be a part of the Swedish National Federation of Sports (RF). We are also proud to belong to FIRA-AER and the IRB, and thus a member of the international rugby fa- mily. We hope that our family will grow even bigger through participation in the Olympic Ga- mes. For us, being a member of this family is a part of our life and a bridge between people that provides joy and comradeship. Rugby is a sport that is kept alive by all the men, women, youngsters, volunteers, spectators and enthusiasts involved. The game involves tough battles on and off the pitch, but with the love of the sport always coming off as the winner. We have a dream that Swedish Rugby will achieve even greater recognition and acceptance in Sweden. We also have a dream that many more will join us in playing the game and thus share the same pleasure and comradeship that we have experienced. Swedish Rugby is a robust 75-yearold with a young heart. Thanks to our new development plan and new staff, we foresee great opportunities to make our dreams come true.

FLASHINFO 133 APRIL 2012 Special U18 EDITO 120407 U18 Elite IR EN Game photo 7 SUCCESSFUL FIRST TIME IN SPAIN First of all, I would like to apologise to the courageous readers who were able to decipher my last Flash Info. I am of the old school and my abundant handwriting disturbed the IT supremacy. In brief, I did not comply with formatting requirements and was given a straight red card: the font was illegible. To avoid this, my style will this time be more straightforward. From now on, this space will be dedicated to the main information while the other news will be in the "In Brief" section in the following pages. Obviously the main title is the Justin Bridou U18 European Championship, which has just been completed. Our Spanish friends, following hosting in Italy and France, have delivered a perfect event. The organisation was a success with the innovative concept of a single place of accommodation for the 800 participants! The installations in Madrid, Toledo and Segovia were first class and the staff were competent, young and dedicated. On sporting terms, if the final (England 23 - Ireland 13) was a remake, there are many other highlights: Georgia's defeat of Italy, the German "revival", Portugal's good performance versus Ireland and the progress by Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden prove that the qualifying process was a success and makes up for the disappointing performances from Eastern nations (with the exception of Poland). another major satisfaction: Rugby is definitely part of the Spanish culture! The cherry on the cake would be for our British friends to host this event in the future.

  • “Le Bleu Et Le Noir”: New Zealand Perspectives on French Rugby 153
“Le Bleu et le Noir”: New Zealand Perspectives on French Rugby 153 “Le Bleu et le Noir”: New Zealand Perspectives on French Rugby Geoffrey Watson New Zealand’s connections to France, via its national game, Rugby Union, extend over 100 years.1 To the extent to which New Zealanders read about France at all, much of it comes from sports reporting in the media, tour books and player biographies. Aspects of the sporting relationship between New Zealand and France have been commented on in a number of accounts, but there are few detailed surveys. New Zealand and the French: Two Centuries of Contact, first published in 1990, did not include a chapter on sport among its nineteen chapters, although editor John Dunmore made some allusions to rugby in his chapter on “French influences in New Zealand life.”2 This brief survey of New Zealand’s rugby encounters with France commences with a historical summary of four key periods: early contacts (1906-53); the era of mutual discovery (1961-68); the era of near parity (1973-1986); and France as nemesis and source of redemption (1987 to the present). It then considers New Zealand perceptions of French rugby and the way the game has promoted social and cultural ties between the two nations. Viewed purely in statistical terms, New Zealand’s rugby relationship with France may appear one-sided. Since the All Blacks first played France on New Year’s Day in 1906, New Zealand and France have played 54 international matches against each other. New Zealand has won 41 of these games, France 12 with one match drawn.3 These statistics do not, however, reveal the character of matches between the two nations, in particular the ability of French teams to win vital games against the All Blacks, such as Geoff Watson is Senior Lecturer in History at Massey University.

  • Experimental Law Variations August 2008 Foreword by Bernard Lapasset, IRB Chairman
The IRB Guide to Experimental Law Variations August 2008 Foreword by Bernard Lapasset, IRB Chairman I welcomed the decision by the IRB Council in 2004 to review the Laws of the Game following recommendations that came out of the Conference on the Playing of the Game that was held in Auckland after Rugby World Cup 2003. Subsequently, a lot of hard work has been undertaken by an IRB Laws Project Group which has studied a group of Experimental Law Variations (ELVs) with the assistance of a number of our Member Unions. This ongoing co-operation is much appreciated. Following this unprecedented work, Council has now approved a global trial at all levels of the Game of certain Experimental Law Variations (ELVs) beginning on August 1, 2008. This decision to implement a global trial represents an important milestone for the future of the Game. The trial will involve 13 ELVs that have been undergoing practical on field experimentation in approved tournaments around the world over the last two years. This guide introduces these 13 ELVs. The Laws Project Group will closely monitor the global trial over the next 12 months with the assistance of Member Unions. Then, next year, Council will review all the ELVs that will have undergone trials before deciding if all or any of the ELVs should be accepted into full Law. Bernard Lapasset Chairman, International Rugby Board Important notes: • the Laws of the Game, unless specifically amended by the ELVs, remain unaltered • the ELVs also apply to the Sevens and Under 19 Variations Experimental Law Variations Summary Law 6 - Match Officials 1 Assistant referees are able to assist the referee in any way that the referee requires.
