Cape Cod Commission This year’s front and rear covers were designed by Dan Proto, Town of Dennis MIS Director. The photo was provided courtesy of Channel 18, Jeff Clough. The front and rear cover photos depict an aerial photo of the Sesuit Harbor Dredge project. With the exception of the entrance channel, Sesuit Harbor had not been dredged since its construction in 1957. Erosion of the shoreline had filled in the Harbor over the past six decades and a large number of dockage slips were unusable or inaccessible at periods of low tide. The Sesuit Harbor Use and Capacity Study, completed in 2015, identified improvement dredging throughout the Harbor as a priority. At the May 8, 2018 Annual Town Meeting the citizens of Dennis voted to approve $4,008,857 to dredge Sesuit Harbor. Thank you to citizens of the Town of Dennis for their support in these projects. The photo on the inside front cover is of the lighted cupola at the Dennis Playhouse. In 2018, for the first time in 62 years, the cupola at the historic Cape Playhouse was once again lit as a beacon for the community. The repair was made possible through an earmark from Representative Tim Whelan. Now is its 93rd season, The Cape Playhouse continues to light up the night, bringing thrilling theatrical productions and Broadwayʹs brightest stars to the Dennis community. Thank you to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Representative Timothy Whelan for his assistance in the grant for the Playhouse cupola repairs.     Route 116 Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan July 2013 Historic and Archaeological Resources C H A P T E R 5 Route 116 Scenic Byway Introduction The Route 116 Scenic Byway is steeped in the local history of the towns along the Byway. The fertile valley lowlands and surrounding uplands were once occupied by Native Americans, who hunted, fished, and cultivated the floodplains. Footpaths were worn along river valleys through the Berkshire Hills, where hunting and fishing camps were located. Europeans later used these paths to settle the upland areas west of the Connecticut River Valley. Over time the paths were changed and improved for use by carriages, railroads, and automobiles. Today, Route 116 follows a similar route to the trail that was used by Native Americans. It travels through a landscape that varies from the flat river bottom lowlands to the forested uplands spotted with open agricultural land. The villages, homes, and farms along the Byway help tell the story of a region rich in natural resources, agricultural and industrial ingenuity. In the Connecticut River Valley agriculture dominated, while the advent of the railroad brought additional industries and residents to the area. In the highlands, the use of water power for mills created small villages, while the outlying areas were used for grazing land and forests were used for lumber. The towns ebbed and flowed as new technologies and transportation improvements changed the nature of manufacturing. The communities in the Berkshires were settled later than the communities in the eastern section of the Byway. The hilly topography and rocky soil made building and farming very challenging, as did the uncertainties inherent to life in the virtual wilderness during the French and Indian Wars (mid 1700s).

Howland 1 The following excerpts from a sequence of Greenfield, MA, newspapers of different titles act as an index to notices and reports relating to Deerfield and other Franklin County towns. The compiler, Amelia Miller (1926-2003), systematically searched the newspapers looking for items relating to Deerfield as a project funded by HIstoric Deerfield, Inc. She included materials on other local towns, and topics of particular interest to her. These she entered into hand-written notebooks over the course of a number of years.
