Considerable inter- and intra-specific variation in both seed production and germinability was demonstrated for the majority of taxa. The seed to flower ratio, or “seed set”, ranged from 0% to 68% with an overall mean of 21% in 82 accessions representing seed from 48 populations of the 22 taxa. Percentage germination ranged from 7% to 100% with an average of 49% for 68 accessions. The precariously low annual reproductive capacity of some of the more restricted and critically endangered taxa threatens their survival and unexpected disturbance events may result in population decline or even localised extinction. Mitigation measures such as the reintroduction of plant material into new sites and the enhancement of existing populations through additional plantings may be warranted for many of Western Australia’s rare and threatened Verticordia. The new species described below also grows near salt lakes but occurs more than 200 km further inland than V. halophila. It was first collected in 1926 from a salt lake near Southern Cross by Charles Gardner, who identified it as V. pennigera Endl. Gardner’s specimen remained the only collection until 1990, when three further collections were made. Elizabeth George treated the new taxon as a disjunct ‘eastern’ or ‘inland’ variant of V. halophila, noting that it differed from the western variant in being ‘more rigid but lower, spreading to 40–45 cm wide’ and in flowering more prolifically (George & Pieroni 2002: 318). -

Using adult abundance and distribution data from three of these transects and an additional transect established in 1976, we investigated the various ecological responses of myrtaceous shrub species representing the four habitat groups to long-term (20-30 yr) decreasing groundwater and soil moisture levels. Myrtaceous shrubs were chosen for analysis because of their widespread occurrence and diversity on the Swan Coastal Plain, and because Myrtaceae is the only plant family to be represented in all four of Havel’s habitat categories. Myrtaceous species ‘tolerant of excessive wetness’ (Astartea fascicularis, Hypocalymma angustifolium, Pericalymma ellipticum, Regelia ciliata) are all shallow rooted (rooting depth < 1m), occur in winter-wet depressions, and displayed the greatest reduction in population size in response to decreasing groundwater levels. -

Photograph: Andrew Brown July 2004 Department of Conservation and Land Management Western Australian Threatened Species and Communities Unit (WATSCU) PO Box 51, Wanneroo, WA 6946 Interim Recovery Plan for Epiblema grandiflorum var. cyaneum ms FOREWORD Interim Recovery Plans (IRPs) are developed within the framework laid down in Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) Policy Statements Nos. 44 and 50. IRPs outline the recovery actions that are required to urgently address those threatening processes most affecting the ongoing survival of threatened taxa or ecological communities, and begin the recovery process. CALM is committed to ensuring that Critically Endangered taxa are conserved through the preparation and implementation of Recovery Plans or Interim Recovery Plans and by ensuring that conservation action commences as soon as possible and always within one year of endorsement of that rank by the Minister. This Interim Recovery Plan replaces plan number 69 - Blue Babe-in-the-Cradle Orchid (Epiblema grandiflorum var. cyaneum ms) (G. Stack et al. 2000). This Interim Recovery Plan will operate from July 2004 to June 2009 but will remain in force until withdrawn or replaced. It is intended that, if the taxon is still ranked Critically Endangered, this IRP will be reviewed after five years and the need for a full Recovery Plan will be assessed. This IRP was given regional approval on 15 September, 2004 and was approved by the Director of Nature Conservation on 24 September, 2004. -
