Rosh Chodesh Celebration & Women’s Seder

All women of CABI are invited to celebrate Rosh Chodesh Nisan with a women’s chocolate Se- nd der, heavy on the chocolate, on Sunday, April 2 , from 5-7 pm at Betsy Russell’s home. As we open the month of Nisan, which includes Passover, we’ll celebrate our freedom as Jew- ish women in America, the coming holiday, and also, of course, chocolate.

A sweet evening of thoughtful celebration is in store. Please RSVP and we’ll divide up who’s bringing what; it’s not a full Seder meal, but this Seder calls for certain treats (e.g., bittersweet chocolate for our bitter herb, chocolate eggs for the eggs (Reese’s?), and strawberries dipped in chocolate for our karpas). And also, of course, we’ll enjoy good red wine, which so nicely accompanies chocolate. (Note: As this Seder will take place a week before the start of Passover, our foods for this event need not be kosher l’pesach.)

Our tradition tells us that Rosh Chodesh, the holiday of the new moon, was given to women to honor us, that we might be renewed each month just like the moon. In recent decades, groups of Jewish women have been rediscovering this ancient holiday, meeting to share time, learning, food and drink, good company, and a sense of our own worth and place in our tradition and in the world. Our CABI Rosh Chodesh gatherings are now a 10-plus year tradition.

Please RSVP to Betsy at 331-5641, or by email at [email protected]. Let us know if you need directions or to ar- range for a ride. Betsy lives in the foothills just north of the North End, near Harrison and Hill Road. Please join us if you can, and have a chodesh tov - a good month! April Birthdays

Scholarships Awarded from Youth Enrichment Fund

CABI has long had a Youth Enrichment Fund. Through your generous donations, it provides scholarships to our kids for Jewish summer camp and for events hosted by NFTY (North American Federation of Temple Youth). Our scholarships often support our kids’ attendance at Camp Kalsman, a beautiful retreat covering 300 stunning acres near Arlington, Washington. Run by URJ (Union for Reform Juda- ism), Kalsman offers several summer sessions to Jewish campers of all ages from Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Montana, British Columbia, and elsewhere. Our rab- bi and staff often serve a “stint” as camp leaders. Recently our teens are also in- creasingly active in NFTY. We are pleased to help them attend regional confer- ences, where they find many friends among Northwest Jewish teens. This year we find them heading off for national NFTY events, too, and becoming leaders in the NFTY organization.

Our Synagogue staff and Rabbi Dan say they cannot overstate the value of this Jewish immersion. These events pro- vide a strong and unparalleled Jewish experience. They are fun, educational, and validating to our kids’ Jewish identity. Our youth gain skills and insight in athletic, aquatic, artistic, social, and nature programs, besides learning Jewish songs and traditions. They find lifetime friendships. Some of our former campers have eventually chosen to do a term in Israel. How exciting!

The committee that grants scholarships from the Youth Enrichment Fund reviews applications and makes awards based on need and available funds. The committee keeps a low profile and the award process is confidential. Nina and Beth track other available scholarships and are diligent in helping families find funds so kids can attend camp. Because of continued support from our CABI membership, we were thrilled this year to give 12 scholarships. We expect that all our applicants will be able to attend their camp and NFTY sessions, making them more inspired Jews and more active members of our Jewish community. Thanks for your gifts. Happy Camping, Kids!

Adult Learning Opportunities Shabbat Morning Jewish Times Study: Saturdays, April 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 at 9 am Join Haya Kinberg as she continues to bring us captivating insights on the topic of “Jewish Times.” Come and hear her informative presentation each Shabbat morning in March. Bring your ideas to share, and hear what others are thinking, too! Our ongoing sessions will be led by different congregants, who will offer new approaches and themes. We hope you will join us in the Social Hall for a lively, thoughtful Shabbat morning discussion. Talmud Study (in English) on Tuesdays is taking a sabbatical and will resume in September 2017. n Friday night, March 3, Len Levitt and his captivating pup- O pets led both Tot Shabbat in the Social Hall and the Family Shabbat service in the Sanctuary, with help from Elana Salzman on her guitar and Nem- mie Stieha with her very skilled 5th grade class. We loved it! Our charm- ing cast taught us all about L’Cha Dodi, the song traditionally sung on Friday at dusk to welcome Shabbat, with Shab- bat figuratively portrayed in the song as the Sabbath Bride. We had cameo appearances from several other puppets (they were too shy to submit to a photo- graph). They reminded us of the peace and joy that Shabbat adds to our lives. On Friday, March 10 Michael Berkson from Pizmon and Nem- mie lead Shabbat services. With the chorus of Pizmon members in the sanctuary the room was filled with music. During the oneg Pizmon treated us to a few songs, a precursor to Saturday night’s festivities. (photos left and right) A CABI Havurah led services on Friday, March 17. Visit from Jewish Poet Carol V. Davis

On Shabbat afternoon, March 4, we were treated to an inspiring reading by Jewish poet Car- ol V. Davis. Ms. Davis talked to us about what characteristics identify Jewish poetry as op- posed to other poetic approaches, writers, and themes. She read poems from her favorite Jewish poets and then talked about her own life as a Jewish poet, her themes and experienc- es, and her time spent teaching, living and writing in the United States and Russia. She shared some poems from her new book, Because I Cannot Leave This Body, available in CABI’s gift shop 7

Pizmon a cappella put on a fantastic #PitchPurim for CABI as part of their Spring Break Music Outreach Initiative. We loved having them for musical services, pop up concerts, a one of a kind Purim spiel, and as musical guests at our CABI Teen carnival! Their visit brought the joy and fun of a cappella to our congregation and those in our community who could not attend their concert on Saturday night. Thank you to Pizmon, our host families nicknamed "PizParents,” and all of the volunteers who made the Pizmon Purim Shabbaton a success! If you would like to buy a Pizmon CD or t-shirt to help them visit other congrega- tions like ours go to pizmon.org. Pizmon's visit was made possible through our Shir Transformation grant from Covenant Foundation.

Policy Against Harassment and Bullying

The Board of Directors is pleased to share with you CABI's "Policy Against Harassment and Bullying". We want to bring this policy to your attention so that you can review it and know that our conduct is grounded and guided by the teachings of Torah. We celebrate that we are a diverse people within our community and how very fortunate we are to value and respect one another. The policy serves as a guide to support these beliefs. Please feel free to contact the Board of Di- rectors if you have any questions or comments.

“E ssential to the concept of promoting ethical behavior as part of synagogue life is the absolute need for all partic- ipants to conduct themselves in a manner that is above reproach. Whether they be staff or congregants the need to re- late to one another in an appropriate manner is integral to creating a viable, thriving community that promotes, nurtures and fosters conduct grounded in the teachings of Torah. It is therefore the expressed policy of Congregation Ahavath Beth Israel to provide an environment that is supportive and free from harassment, hazing and bullying of any kind. CABI is committed to fostering an atmosphere that is safe and not hostile, offensive, intimidating or disruptive to anyone. This policy shall apply to all facets of congregational life including education, social activities and services while on the CABI campus or at any CABI sponsored event. The use of technol- ogy is included in this policy. Should there be an allegation of a violation of this policy, details must be recorded and a copy given to the Synagogue

Director as soon as possible. In turn the Director will inform the President of the Board of Trustees who will call a meeting

of the Executive Committee. The EC will investigate the complaint and establish a course of action to deal with the alle-

gations. Information“ concerning the investigation will be strictly on a need-to-know basis. Minutes of the meeting as well as phone logs should be kept. Not more than one week shall pass between the report and the Executive Committee meeting.
