Published on Down To Earth (http://www.downtoearth.org.in Breaking the ice Issue Date: 2000‐10‐15 The long‐standing people‐wildlife dispute in Sariska Tiger Reserve is closer to a resolution Sariska villages hope for bet (Credit: Amit Shanker / CSE) people of villages in and around the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Alwar district of Rajasthan have taken a vow to protect wildlife, mainly tigers, by joining hands with the forest department. A decision to form a public body called the Sariska Sansad (Sariska Parliament), which involve the village communities as well as the forest department in park management decisions, was taken at a workshop held on September 8‐10. It was organised by Tarun Bharat Sangh ( tbs), a voluntary agency that has been supporting the villages in building traditional earthen check‐dams called johad s for the past 15 years, which has revived the ecology and the economy of the region. Though the workshop was well attended, only two recommendations came out of it. The first is to put a blanket ban on all tourist activity in the tiger reserve in the July‐September period, which is the breeding season for wild animals. The second is to stop all mining activity in and around the reserve. Another issue that came up was the moving of some villages from the core area of the reserve and rehabilitating them outside. If it happens, this would hasten the elevation of the reserve to the status of a national park, which has been high on the agenda of the state forest department ever since it was proposed in 1982 and then again in 1984. -

It involves integration of different methods of disease and pest management to manage an important disease or pest of a crop or to manage all the important diseases and pests of a particular crop. The present study was conducted in Udaipur district of Rajasthan. Data were collected through pre-structured interview schedule. It was found that 47.92 per cent of the total respondents had medium level of knowledge about IPM in cauliflower cultivation. This study indicates that 63.37 per cent farmers were having very good knowledge about several IPM practices. Only 26.60 per cent farmers were having knowledge about bio-control practices, it indicates that farmers were having very poor knowledge about bio-control practices. Z value shows that farmers of Badgaon tehsil possessed more knowledge than farmers of Girwa tehsil about IPM practices. This article is helpful for extension person for transferring the technologies regarding IPM in this particular area. Keywords- : IPM, Cultural Practices, Knowledge, Biocontrol. -

Ltd., Mumbai, India PREFACE At the superficial level, relations between India and Bangladesh seem to be sailing through troubled waters. The failure to sign the Teesta River Agreement is apparently the most visible example of the failure of reason in the relations between the two countries. What is apparent is often not real. Behind the cacophony of critics, the Governments of the two countries have been working diligently to establish sound foundation for constructive relationship between the two countries. There is a positive momentum. There are also difficulties, but they are surmountable. The reason why the Teesta River Agreement has not been signed is that seasonal variations reduce the flow of the river to less than 1 BCM per month during the lean season. This creates difficulties for the mainly agrarian and poor population of the northern districts of West Bengal province in India and the north-western districts of Bangladesh. There is temptation to argue for maximum allocation of the water flow to secure access to water in the lean season. -

District Survey report of Jalore District 1.0 Introduction The district derives its name from the town of Jalore, which is the headquarters of the district administration. District is located between latitudes 24º 37’ 00” to 25º 49’ 00” and longitudes 71º 11’00” to 73º 05’00” with an area of 10,640 Sq. kms (3.11% of the State). The district is part of Jodhpur Division. The district is composed of five sub-divisions viz. Jalore, Ahore, Bhinmal, Sanchore, Raniwara which cover seven tehsils viz: Jalore, Ahore, Bhinmal, Sanchore, Raniwara, Sayala, Bagora and seven blocks viz: Jalore, Ahore, Bhinmal, Sanchore, Raniwara, Sayala & Jaswantpura. Total number of villages in the district is 802 and it also has 3 urban towns. Total population of the district as per Census 2011 is 1828730 with male and female population of 936634 and 892096 respectively. Administrative divisions of Jalore district are depicted in the index map (Fig. 1). 2.0 Rainfall & Climate Average annual rainfall (1971-2012) of the district is 445.4 mm. However normal rainfall for the period 1901 to 1970 is 400.6 mm. The annual rainfall gradually decreases from southeastern part to northwestern part. Climate of the district is dry except during SW monsoon season. The cold season is from December to February and is followed by summer from March to June. Period from mid of September to end of November constitutes post monsoon season. The district experiences either mild or normal drought once in two years. Severe type of drought has been recorded at Ahore block. Most severe type of drought has been recorded at Bhinmal, Sanchore & Jaswantpura blocks. -

10 March 2004 Management of Lakes in India M.S.Reddy1 and N.V.V.Char2 1. Introduction There is no specific definition for Lakes in India. The word “Lake” is used loosely to describe many types of water bodies – natural, manmade and ephemeral including wetlands. Many of them are euphemistically called Lakes more by convention and a desire to be grandiose rather than by application of an accepted definition. Vice versa, many lakes are categorized as wetlands while reporting under Ramsar Convention. India abounds in water bodies, a preponderance of them manmade, typical of the tropics. The manmade (artificial) water bodies are generally called Reservoirs, Ponds and Tanks though it is not unusual for some of them to be referred to as lakes. Ponds and tanks are small in size compared to lakes and reservoirs. While it is difficult to date the natural lakes, most of the manmade water bodies like Ponds and Tanks are historical. The large reservoirs are all of recent origin. All of them, without exception, have suffered environmental degradation. Only the degree of degradation differs. The degradation itself is a result of lack of public awareness and governmental indifference. The situation is changing but slowly. Environmental activism and legal interventions have put sustainability of lakes in the vanguard of environmental issues. This paper is an attempt at presenting a comprehensive view of the typical problems experienced in the better known lakes, their present environmental status and efforts being made to make them environmentally sustainable. 1.1 Data India is well known for the huge variance in its lakes, but the data is nebulous. -

The largest brunt of its scarcity is experienced in the semi arid and arid regions of the world. Consequently the people of these regions have, from times immemorial, been practicing techniques of rain water conservation and management. Rajasthan is the largest state of India area wise however it has only one percent of the total water resources of the country. Rain water conservation and management techniques have been in practice in the different parts of the state from time immemorial. The present study is concentrated on the water conservation and water management practices developed during the reigns of the various Rawals, Ranas and Maharanas of the Mewar State, Rajasthan. The study area includes Banswara, Bhilwara, Chittorgarh, Dungarpur, Rajsamand, Pratapgarh and Udaipur Districts. The most sacred spots are, in fact, so powerful that their spiritual intensity is actually palpable and visitors get to feel the heightened energy there. In this post, we bring you a feature on some of the holiest lakes of India. Many of these lakes are associated with temples and interesting legends as well. Here is Part I of our article. We will continue with the feature in our next post. Narayan Sarovar Narayan Sarovar or Narayansar is a sacred land for Hindus and is situated on the Kori Creek. This lake is located in the Lakhpat Taluka of Kutch District, Gujarat. The ancient temple of Koteshwar, which lies just 4 kilometers ahead, is associated with this site. Narayan Sarovar is one of the 5 holy lakes of Hinduism, collectively referred to as the Panch- Sarovar. The others are Mansarovar in Tibet, Pampa in Karnataka, Bhuvaneshwar in Orissa and Pushkar in Rajasthan. According to legend, a long time ago, the Saraswati River had an outlet into the sea, near present-day Narayan Sarovar. The waters of this lake were filled with the holy waters of River Saraswati. This lake is mentioned in the Puranas. At one time, a drought hit the area and so, it was dry and arid all around. The people, animals and birds living there suffered and many died due to extreme dehydration.
