THE NEWSLETTER OF THE SOCIETY OF no. 78 27th September 1988

Derek Hinrich tells me that the Museum of London is the place to be at 6.10 pm on Tuesday the 4th October. As part of their season of films "Made in London " they 're showing Maurice Elvey 's HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, with Eille Nor- wood & Hubert Willis, made in 1921. All seats are £££1.50, there 's no advance booking, and the auditorium is small. Be early!

Latest news from the Northcott Theatre, Exeter (phone 0392 54853) is that Ron Moody will play Holmes in Leslie Bricusse 's SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE MUSICAL from 18th October to 19th November.

The first issue of THE MUSGRAVE PAPERS, annual journal of the Northern Mus- graves, is now out at £££1.80 including postage from David Stuart Davies (Over- dale, 69 Greenhead Road, Huddersfield HD1 4ER) or Kathryn White (149 Myrtle Terrace, Cross Roads, Keighley BD22 9AJ). The NMs continue to grow and flour- ish, and the journal promises to be a cracker.

Recently published: MYSTERIES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES by (Random House, 95p). Coming in October: THE PUFFIN SHERLOCK HOLMES by Conan Doyle (Puffin Books, £££2.50) and a facsimile of the 1924 edition of Conan Doyle 's MEMORIES AND ADVENTURES (Greenhill, £££25.00).

New from the BBC is the BBC Radio Collection, a set of cassette recordings of great productions ranging from classic Shakespeare to classic comedy and including SHERLOCK HOLMES, "the classic radio production with Carleton Hobbs and " ( £££5.99). I 've been unable to find out programme details.

New from Marion & Henry Murray, Arlington Supplies (Stamps & Coins) Ltd, PO Box 1102, Barnet, Herts. EN5 5AF: programmes from Brian Clemens ' play HOLMES & THE RIPPER ( £££1.25), a set of 4 of the Westminster City Library greetings cards coloured from Paget illustrations ( £££4.50) and a first day cover 13 October 1987 for the Studio Pottery series of stamps - the cover also celebrates "The Six Napoleons " ( £££2.50). All prices include postage.

Andries Poot reminds me that the classic comic strip versions of the canon, together with original stories, written by Edith Meiser & drawn by Frank Giacoia, are being issued in magazine form. A good source in this part of the world is MURDER ONE (23 Denmark Street, off Charing Cross Road). They also stock Dan Day 's splendidly (if to English eyes eccentrically) illustrated instalments of the canon.

Direct from is the news that four more hour-long Sherlock Holmes plays are planned by Granada TV for 1989, with Brett & Edward Hardwicke. Hooray!

From John E. Stephenson: the Baker Street Tea Co. (Box 62, Little Silber, NJ 07739, USA) makes - guess what! - Baker Street Tea. From Peter E. Blau: Bosson wall plaques have added a Moriarty to go with their Holmes & Watson busts; these are available at various souvenir shops, including one by Baker Street Station. I (RJ) found Michael Hardwick 's THE PRIVATE LIFE OF DR WATSON at £££1.99 at the Booksmith in Charing Cross Road last week; other remainder shops may have copies at the same price. Granada TV has produced a flier for its studio tour, including the Baker Street set, available from tourist infor- mation centres or Granada Studios Tour, Manchester M60 9EA.
