#5 LSU vs. ULM Nov. 13, 2010 – Tiger Stadium (Baton Rouge, La.) LSU Postgame Notes Team Notes 1. LSU’s game captains were 9 Jordan Jefferson, 11 Kelvin Sheppard, 30 Josh Jasper, 64 P.J. Lonergan and 92 Drake Nevis. 2. LSU received the ball to open the first half. ULM won the toss and deferred to the second half. 3. RB Michael Ford, CB Tyrann Mathieu, SS Eric Reid and RT Greg Shaw each earned their first career start during Saturday’s game. LSU has now featured a total of 19 first-time starters during the 2010 season. 4. By forcing ULM to punt on a three-and-out on its first offensive possession, LSU has held its opponents scoreless on opening drives in all 10 games this season. The LSU defense has forced nine punts and one turnover by its opponents on first drives in 2010. 5. While jumping out to a 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, the LSU defense held its seventh opponent scoreless in the first quarter in 10 games this season. Only Auburn, Tennessee and McNeese State have scored on the Tigers in the first quarter in 2010. 6. LSU’s 13 points scored in the first quarter of Saturday’s game is a season-high for points scored in a first quarter this season. 7. The Tigers finished the game by scoring 31 points off of ULM turnovers. LSU matched its season high by causing five turnovers in the game, equaling its output in a 29-7 win over Mississippi State back on Sept. 18. 8. LSU improved to 9-1 for the third time in six seasons under head coach Les Miles. The Tigers were also 9-1 after 10 games during both the 2005 and 2007 seasons. 9. LSU’s 51-0 win over ULM is the second-largest margin of victory for the Tigers in the Miles era. The Tigers defeated North Texas by a score of 56-3 on Oct. 29, 2005 in Miles’ first season as head coach. 10. LSU upped its record against Louisiana teams to 132-25-8 all-time and 2-0 against ULM. 11. LSU extended its nation-leading streak of consecutive non-conference, regular-season victories to 33, and the Tigers have also won 31 straight non-conference games in Tiger Stadium. LSU is 23-0 in regular-season non-conference games under Miles and 27-1 in non- conference games overall with the only loss coming to Penn State in last year’s Capital One Bowl. 12. LSU is now 58-25-3 in homecoming games and has won 10-straight dating back to 2000 when UAB stunned the Tigers, 13-10. 13. With the win, Miles has 60 victories in six seasons at LSU and an overall record of 60-16. Only two coaches in LSU history have won more games than Miles – Charles McClendon (137) and Bernie Moore (83). 14. At halftime, Kristin Davis of Lafayette, La., was crowned the homecoming queen and Stuart Watkins of Welsh, La., was crowned the homecoming king during the evening’s festivities. Individual Notes 15. PK Josh Jasper made 3-of-3 field goals on the night from distances of 53, 45 and 29 yards. a. His 53-yard field goal with 4:26 to play in the first quarter is a new career high, improving upon the 52-yard field goal he made against Louisiana-Lafayette on Sept. 19, 2009. His 53-yarder also ties Georgia’s Blair Walsh for the longest field goal made in the SEC this season. b. Jasper is now 39-of-46 for his career and moved into sole possession of fourth place on LSU’s all-time career list for made field goals. c. From 40 yards or more, Jasper is now 14-of-19 for his career. d. From 50 yards or more, Jasper is now 4-of-6 for his career and is now tied with former Tiger placekicker Colt David for first place on the all-time list of field goals made from 50 yards or more. e. For the season, Jasper improved to 20-of-24 on field goals. His 20 field goals made this season ranks No. 2 on LSU’s all- time list for a single season, while his 24 field goal attempts ranks in a tie for the No. 2 spot on the single-season list. f. Jasper remains the LSU leader in career field goal percentage having drilled 84.8 percent of his kicks. He is also second in SEC history in that category. g. Jasper was a perfect 6-of-6 on extra points on the night, improving to 27-of-28 on the season and 66-of-67 for his career. 16. CB Ron Brooks returned his first career interception 32 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers an early 7-0 lead over ULM with 7:05 to play in the first quarter. a. Brooks’ score was LSU’s first defensive TD of the 2010 season and LSU’s first interception returned for a TD since Sept. 26, 2009 when CB Patrick Peterson returned one for a score against Mississippi State. b. Brooks also recorded his first career sack during the first quarter of Saturday’s game, while also setting a new career high with five total tackles in the game (2 solo, 3 assists). 17. DE Lavar Edwards added a second defensive touchdown for LSU in the game as he returned his first career fumble recovery 29 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 36-0 lead with 10:05 to play in the third quarter. a. With defensive touchdowns by both Brooks and Edwards, it marked the first time since a 70-14 win over Arkansas State on Oct. 12, 1991 that LSU has recorded two defensive TDs in a game. Three INTs were returned for TDs in that game against Arkansas State by Corey Raymond (30 yards), David Walkup (31 yards) and Carlton Buckels (44 yards). 18. In the first quarter, CB Patrick Peterson intercepted his third pass of the season and sixth pass of his career and returned it 85 yards to the ULM 12 yard line, setting up an eventual 1-yard touchdown run by RB Stevan Ridley. a. Peterson’s 85-yard return ties for the third-longest interception return in school history. White Graves (vs. Kentucky, 1964) and Greg Jackson (vs. Mississippi State, 1988) each returned INTs of 100 yards, while Mark Roman (vs. Tulane, 1996) also recorded a return of 85 yards. b. Peterson’s 85-yard return is also the longest non-touchdown INT return in school history. c. With 85 INT return yards in the game, Peterson has now totaled 168 yards worth of INT return yardage in his career to move into a tie for eighth place on the school’s all-time career list with former LSU safety Damien James. 19. Peterson also returned three punts for 31 yards in the game to give him 388 punt return yards on the year, moving himself into sole possession of sixth place on LSU’s all-time list for punt return yardage in a single season. 20. RB Steven Ridley recorded his eighth and ninth rushing touchdowns of the season to lead the offensive scoring in LSU’s 51-0 win. a. Ridley scored touchdowns on a 1-yard run with 12:28 to play in the second quarter and on a 7-yard run with 10:20 to play in the third quarter. He now has 12 career rushing touchdowns in an LSU uniform. 21. RB Spencer Ware scored his first career rushing touchdown on a 5-yard run with 3:33 to play in the third quarter. 22. DT Lazarius Levingston recorded his first career fumble recovery on the third turnover of the game caused by the LSU defense with 5:03 to play in the second quarter. 23. LB Stefoin Francois recorded his first career sack during ULM’s first offensive possession of the second half, dropping quarterback Kolton Browning for a loss of 10 yards on third down. 24. FS Craig Loston picked off his first career pass with 12:46 to play in the fourth quarter. It was LSU’s third interception of the game and fifth turnover by the Tiger defense. .
