11 ABSTRACT Phylogenetic analysis of the genus Anacardium L. The genus Anacardium L. is composed by a relatively small number of species, being A. occidentale the only species that is cultivated and distributed in all tropical regions. Brasil is probably the center of origin, with two different diversity centers. Here, two genic regions commonly used (ITS1 e trnL) were employed to evaluate the diversity present between and within species of the genus. The results showed evidences of the existence of intraspecific variation, mainly for the ITS1 region, which can difficult the phylogenetic reconstructions, since small variation was observed among the analysed species. The trnL region showed an evidence that this region could be used to discriminate the two diversity centers. The groups obtained suggest the same groups observed in the literature by numerical taxonomy. However more data is necessary to test those evidences. Our aim was to verify the efficiency of X-ray imagery in evaluating cashew-tree-of-the-cerrado (Anacardium othonianum Rizz.) achene viability after desiccation. The achenes were collected at 12% water content (w.b.) and dried in silica gel until they reached 10, 8, 6, and 4% (w.b.). The fruit morphology and the quality of the seeds were evaluated by X-ray test together with vigor, electrical conductivity and emergence tests. Achenes with different water contents were exposed to an X- ray machine at 18 kV for 11 s and were thereafter submitted to emergence tests. The images were analyzed, and the achenes were classified based on internal morphology as completely full, malformed, or empty. These results were compared to those from the emergence tests.

Pollen tube growth rates (PTGRs) of angiosperms are exceptionally rapid, a pattern 25 attributed to more effective haploid selection under stronger pollen competition. Paradoxically, 26 whole genome duplication (WGD) has been common in angiosperms but rare in gymnosperms.

Box 392, Victoria, Mahé, Seychelles Author for correspondence: Sylvain G. Razafimandimbison, [email protected] Abstract Many monotypic genera with unique apomorphic characters have been difficult to place in the morphology-based classifications of the coffee family (Rubiaceae). We rigorously assessed the subfamilial phylogenetic position and generic status of three enigmatic genera, the Seychellois Glionnetia, the Southeast Asian Jackiopsis, and the Chinese Trailliaedoxa within Rubiaceae, using sequence data of four plastid markers (ndhF, rbcL, rps16, trnTF). The present study provides molecular phylogenetic support for positions of these genera in the subfamily Ixoroideae, and reveals the presence of a basal grade of morphologically distinct, monotypic genera (Crossopteryx, Jackiopsis, Scyphiphora, Trailliaedoxa, and Glionnetia, respectively) in the species-rich Vanguerieae alliance. These five genera may represent sole representatives of their respective lineages and therefore may carry unique genetic information. Their conservation status was assessed, applying the criteria set in IUCN Red List Categories. We consider Glionnetia and Jackiopsis Endangered. Scyphiphora is recognized as Near Threatened despite its extensive range and Crossopteryx as Least Concern.
