When Doug Cook went in for pacemaker surgery a week prior to marrying wife Michele, both knew their commitment to one another was true. “She’s the sweetest, kindest person I’ve ever known,” Doug says of Michele, who in turn offers, “He always makes me laugh.” e Cooks have opted for the full retinue of Family Hospice services, including expressive music to soothe Doug’s recurrent muscle spasms, a symptom of mitochondrial disease. But Doug’s primary concerns are not for himself. “Patients don’t think about themselves…they think about those around them,” observes volunteer Jim Sheridan, a member of the Family Hospice team available to the Cooks, including sons Connor and Christopher. Additionally, expressive art therapist Lisa Ellinger visits with Connor, who benefits om a creative, constructive outlet through which to process and express his feelings. “is is where hospice can really make a difference,” says RN case manager Mary Jo McLaughlin. “Doug and Michele are parents of young children, without any extended family here in Pittsburgh; we are their family.”

Your kindness during the last fiscal year, afforded Family Hospice and Palliative Rafael J. Sciullo Care the resources to make available $344,239 in free care to qualified patients who otherwise would not have received these services. Free care includes service related home visits, supplies, medications, medical equipment, massages, pet therapy and transportation for patients, as well as caregiver training and counseling services for families and friends. Without your generosity this would not be possible.

In the past year, Family Hospice and Palliative Care adopted a new tagline to describe its services. Making the most of life is exactly what we do . . . with your help, of course.

rough your contributions our organization developed new programs between June 30, 2009, and July 1, 2010. Pathways, for example, addresses the medical and emotional issues facing patients with end-stage dementia and heart failure. Family members learn what to expect with the progression of each disease. Our intention is to educate so that nothing inhibits the patient and family from spending quality time while it exists.

We expanded our pet therapy program, one of four complimentary services. Maureen Haggarty, Ph.D. Perhaps you saw the Whirl Magazine article about Ivan, our golden retriever who comforts patients and families on our Inpatient Unit at e Center for Compassionate Care. Ivan’s gentle demeanor and presence with our patients has made headlines from coast-to-coast and in Canada. He’s officially a member of our staff, and more importantly, a member of our Family.

Another big step in Fiscal Year 2010 was the launch of our Future Fund. ink of the fund as a 401k for our nonprofit organization. e purpose of the fund is to help Family Hospice offer the same quality programs and services to patients and families in decades to come. at includes Free Care to persons who qualify under the Federal Poverty Guidelines, education of staff and the general public, and capital needs so that our organization can grow to meet Jon Allegretti, Chair demands for services.

each year people ask how they may give back to our non-profit organization. they have seen their loved one comforted and they know the value of programs that support caregivers. there are multiple ways in which anyone may contribute to family Hospice and palliative care:

1. tell others about us. Word of mouth is the best reference. if you are familiar with our services, please take the time to tell others about our 24/7 services, clinical staff, caregiver support, and outreach to grieving children.

2. let us be your charity of choice. Designate family Hospice and palliative care in the obituary of your loved one, or choose us when you select a “charity of choice” to remember someone. We have beautiful, colorful sympathy cards that you can send to the family. the cards are free.

3. attend our special events. 2011 marks the 24th annual Golf benefit held in May. the day includes lunch, refreshments on the course, sit-down bbQ dinner and skill prizes. our annual Memorial River Walk, held in october, is a family event in which hundreds of luminarias line the 1.5-mile trail. children under 12 walk free.

4. consider the future fund. a gift to our future fund will help family Hospice and palliative care to provide programs to patients and their families in decades to come. bequests, gifts of stock, cash contributions, real estate or other property, charitable gift annuities and life insurance may be used to support the future fund.

5. participate in our holiday appeal. thousands of white doves adorn Memorial trees at malls throughout Western pennsylvania between mid-november and late December. each dove has a tag with the name of someone to be remembered.
