Remembering William Tyndale (c.1494-1536)

William Tyndale studied at Oxford – he knew seven languages – and was ordained priest. He became convinced the Bible should be made available to ordinary people in English, but found the Church and King Henry were hostile, so he went to live and work in Germany and the Netherlands. His English New Testament was published, and smuggled into , in 1534. However, in 1536 he was convicted of heresy and executed in Flanders. We remember him in particular on October 6th, the anniversary of his death. His translation was in clear English, and later authorised translations used it extensively. The King James version of the New Testament has been estimated to be 83% Tyndale’s version. 6 7 Despite my singing in Over the last few weeks, lockdown not always we have begun singing Generous Giving Campaign recalled as a pleasant again in Church. 12 13 Open Garden Sunday It was one more step towards normality being able to walk round gardens, free of all restrictions, on Open Gardens Sunday on the 5th September, and how refreshing it was! Because of Covid (how often have we had to use that wretched phrase) the date was later than its usual timing of mid- summer, but the gardens we saw still had plenty of colour, as this one in Colborne Avenue. It was good to re-visit some of the familiar gardens, not seen for nearly 3 years. One of the benefits of the lockdown months was that people were able to spend more time in their gardens, and those being shown certainly lived up to expectations. In one garden in Northleigh Lane we were treated to a running concert by a ukulele trio, to listen to whilst drinking a cup of tea on the garden terrace - very relaxing! Wimborne in Bloom announced that the turnout of visitors was well over 100. It was a delightful way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon. Barry Gibbs
