ORMAN family origins in Dorset Jill Coulthard sent me this document about the origins of the Orman name which is common in Verwood in Dorset. She received it from someone with this surname she met at a family history fair. The story tells of how this family of Ormans derived its name from Ormandy (and other spellings) and in particular Miles Ormandy, the parish clerk of Hampreston, a village about 6 miles from Verwood. A Miles Bowness apparently from Windermere, Westmorland, was appointed Vicar of Hampreston in 1614 and it is believed Miles Ormandy was a kinsman who came down to assist him, but which must have been at a much later stage as the only Miles Ormandy (based on the on IGI) was baptised 1612 in Ulverston. Before too many years the family had dropped the DY and become Orman. First Generation 1. Richard Orman (or Ormundie) We found three children of Richard who we are told came to Dorset. SOURCES I.G.I. on net Supposition Richard Orman (or Ormundie) had the following children: 2 i. Miles Orman, born about 1612, Ulverston, Lancashire; married Anne Orman (nee Stevens), on 4 Apr 1638, Hampreston, Dorset. ii. Ursula (Ursella) Orman(dy) was baptized on 5 Oct 1603 in Ulverston, Lancashire. She was buried on 19 Aug 1638 in Wimborne Minster, Dorset. ANY OTHER INFORMATION 1603 Baptised as Ursula Ormundie 1638 Buried as Ursella Ormandy. We have been told by Nick Orman that she is the sister of Miles and James and a kinswoman of Miles Bowness, vicar of Hampreston. He left her £5 and left other sums to her brothers in his will. SOURCES I.G.I. on net - baptism, Wimborne Minster Parish Records Index - Burial. Nick Orman who has a copy of the will of Miles Bowness. iii. James Orman was baptized on 26 Apr 1607 in Ulverston, Lancashire. ANY OTHER INFORMATION 1607 Baptised as Jacobus Ormundie. James was left £1 in the will of Miles Bowness, vicar of Hampreston, who also left money to his sister and brother. SOURCES I.G.I. on net - Baptism Nick Orman who has a copy of the will of Miles Bowness. Second Generation 2. Miles Orman was baptized on 16 Sep 1612 in Ulverston, Lancashire. ANY OTHER INFORMATION 1612 We found Milo Ormundie baptised the son of Richardi. Nick Orman says that Miles was left £2 in the will of Miles Bowness, vicar of Hampreston, who also left money to Miles' sister and brother. Nick also says that he came to Dorset with Miles Bowness, who was probably a relative and who became Vicar of Hampreston in 1614. They came from Windermere in Westmorland. He also became parish clerk of Hampreston and we think was described as such in the Will. Miles Orman and Anne Orman (nee Stevens) were married on 4 Apr 1638 in Hampreston, Dorset. Anne Orman (nee Stevens) was buried on 5 Apr 1641 in Hampreston, Dorset. Miles Orman and Anne Orman (nee Stevens) had the following children: 4 i. We found the baptism of William Ormandye with a father Miles. If our Miles is the father of this child, he must have married a second time, because his first wife died in 1641. 3 i. William Orman(dye), baptised 26 Dec 1655, Wimborne, Dorset. Nick Orman also found a Miles son of William, which seems to confirm the second marriage.
