QMROA News 2019 has gone at a frantic pace, and as we now pause to catch our breaths (for some?) thoughts turn to end of year time with families, as we refresh and contemplate developments for 2020. The new year will bring an exciting (if not challenging) year, and it will be kicking off for me in the second week of January. 2020 will present eight race meetings at Morgan Park including the four state rounds, two historic rounds, the Improved Production Nationals, and a National Championship event. In addition, there is also the Townsville and Gold Coast Supercar events (with the latter to be held under lights for the first time), plus the usual International events, such as Asian Le Mans Series, and Australian Grand Prix. -

TASMANIAN MOTORSPORT HALL OF FAME DAVID “Skippy” PARSONS (Inducted 2021) David “Skippy” Parsons started his motorsport career as a teenager, on a trials bike in 1975. He had a natural talent and won the Tasmanian championship the following year. It was to be his first of an amazing nine consecutive championships through until 1985. David also contested three Australian championships, which in the 1970s and 1980s usually attracted fields of nearly 300 riders from all over Australia and overseas, finishing ninth in 1985. While excelling on two wheels, David was also starting to make a name for himself on four wheels, winning his class in club days in his father Graham’s Holden Torana SLR5000 L34. He also set a course record at the Highclere Hillclimb, in the State’s North-West, which stood for many years, so when Graham retired from racing in 1977, it was only natural David move up to touring cars. After several seasons, which included a class record at Symmons Plains, David upgraded to a Holden Commodore - and always looking for more power - he purchased a second-hand motor from John Harvey of the Holden Dealer Team in 1982. David finished fifth in the Symmons Plains round of the national championship before going on to record four top-five results to finish 12th in the championship and winning Rookie of the Year. His efforts didn’t go un-noticed and he was recruited by the Peter Jansen Cadbury Schweppes Team to race a Commodore at the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000 endurance events. David and Peter finished fourth in David’s first appearance at Mount Panorama, qualifying third on the grid the following year and running as high as second before a blown engine ended their day. -

Marlboro Holden Dealer Team (MHDT) VB Commodore. One of Australia’s most celebrated and record breaking Touring Cars. The Origins of this car go back to late 1979. The vehicle was constructed in November – December 1979 by the Marlboro Holden Dealer Team (MHDT) under the guidance of John Sheppard. The original specification of the car was a VB model and first seen testing at Calder Raceway in Mid December 1979. The vehicle first ran without guard flares, a makeshift front air dam and was also fitted with an A9X bonnet scoop. Being the first Commodore Group C built, it was used to develop and produce the “race and homologation specification” for the CAMS. The HDT passed to Peter Brock’s ownership in early January 1980. Brock took over the entire team assets including the ‘prototype’ Commodore and its homologation duties to all other Commodore teams. The prototype was then to become the first MHDT racing Commodore. (For reference purposes only, we shall refer to the car as MHDT COMM 1, though this identification of MHDT chassis did not start until the build of the third chassis, the 1981 Bathurst car.) Peter Brock’s ‘new’ HDT, sponsored by Marlboro, was announced on Tuesday 28 February 1980 with the unveiling of the car alongside lead driver Peter Brock, newly appointed MHDT Team Manager Noel Richards and Chief Mechanic Bruce Nowacki. In its first (1980) season, Brock and the car won the Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC) and posted eight straight ‘pole positions’ (every round of the ATCC) to create a record that will possibly never be broken. -

Rare Glimpse into HDT Special Vehicles History as Archives Open for a Limited Time The 50th Anniversary HDT Archives Collection has been unveiled – a 10kg compendium, an encyclopaedia of HDT paperwork, stories and history from the iconic brand which was once the 5th largest car manufacturer in Australia. Just one year after debuting in 1968 with six HK 327 Monaro's, the Holden Dealer Team took out first, third and sixth position in the 1969 Bathurst under directorship of Harry Firth. With a young Peter Brock behind the wheel, HDT celebrated many years of racing success and became the first team ever to win three “back to back” Bathurst 1000 races. After purchasing Holden Dealer Team Brock started building road cars under the HDT Special Vehicles banner. After a captivating and controversial journey this iconic brand has announced a limited release of the HDT Archives Collection - a 350+ page, 10kg coffee table size compendium sure to be the ultimate collector’s item for all HDT and automotive enthusiasts. The compilation provides a unique glimpse into the early years of HDT as a Rally and Rallycross team through to the legendary days of Peter Brock and HDT Special Vehicles. It shares insights, amazing imagery and confidential paperwork from the early racing days to the all-conquering Bathurst victories. NOVEMBER 9TH TO 18TH DULUX RALLY TROPHY FOR WINNING CREW more commonly known as the ‘Elephant Penis’ 22 23 24 25 Before anyone slings off at Tom, be informed that he was navigating; the driver (and photographer!) was Toby Bent, of Castrol Motor Sport fame at race circuits. Toby Bent, a very wise gentleman, drove Tom on all of the 1972 Dulux Rally course surveys and was wonderful company. Conducted in November, the Dulux Rally 72 was directed by Tom Snooks, who carried out the administration of the 1971 Dulux Rally, and who had become Secretary of the Australian Sporting Car Club. Oran Park’s Circuit Manager, Allan Horsley, was the event's Race Director. Geoff Sproat was the CAMS Course Checker, and he did a very thorough job in making sure the instructions were accurate. The Dulux Rally, with its format of constant variation and continually fluctuating placings, had captured the imagination of a far broader section of the community than the pure enthusiast.
