Coordinator for the CPS programme in / Peace worker to support & advise the partner organisation Peace Link in Nanyuki, Kenya

The living situation of pastoralists in Northern Kenya is characterised by resource conflicts over land, pasture and water as well as advancing climate change. Livelihoods are also threatened by planned large-scale infrastructure projects such as ‘resort cities’ and tourism industry concepts, among others, which seek building permits on pastoralists' traditional land. A recently passed land reform allows communities to register communal land in the land register. The local partner Isiolo Peace Link (IPL) was founded in 2006 as a community-based organisation. A total of seven local employees work in the core team to deal with resource-based conflicts between pastoral communities. IPL works on community policing, early warning, mediation and reconciliation as well as conflict prevention in . The contribution of the peace worker is mainly in capacity building / development of local staff in methods and approaches of civil conflict transformation.

Your tasks 1. Coordination of the CPS programme of World Peace Service in Kenya (50 %):  Support peace workers in organisational matters (work and residence permits, health, housing, cooperation with the partner organisation)  Advise peace workers and partner organisations on conceptual issues (on the use of civil conflict transformation methods, on impact-oriented planning and implementation of their activities, on knowledge management, on financial issues and reporting)  Conduct workshops on programme planning, exchange of experiences and evaluation of programme development with the peace workers and partner organisations  First review and feedback of project applications as well as annual reports of partner organisations in Kenya  Preparation of first drafts for applications and annual interim / final reports to Engagement Global / BMZ in German  Development of possible new projects and cooperations with partner organisations, including possible new peace worker assignments  Participation in the selection of peace workers  Safety coordination for the peace workers  Coordination with local auditors for the annual audits  Provide advice to the partner organisation's financial accounting departments on accounting in accordance with WFD and BMZ requirements  Establish and cultivate professional networks and synergies with other organisations and external representation of the programme, e.g. in the context of cooperation with other CPS implementing organisations in Kenya (AGIAMONDO, GIZ and pbi)  Contribute to public relations and lobby work of Weltfriedensdienst e.V. in Germany

2. Capacity building / Development of the partner organisation Isiolo Peace Link (50 %):  Support organising and coordinating peacebuilding, conflict resolution and activities with local communities  Advice on the development of impact-oriented M&E methods and mechanisms  Support in strategy development, formulation of action plans and reporting for IPL and its partner organisations  Advice on the development of conflict early warning systems  Assist in the preparation of thematic and financial reports according to WFD and BMZ specifications  Support the project partner in the long-term systematic development of conflict and project management skills as well as gender sensitisation  Strengthen local NGOs in their impact orientation and with regard to planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of projects, as well as in other aspects of NGO management, if required  Build networks and contacts with similarly oriented organisations / funding partners

Your profile Qualifications  Relevant degree and topical focus or training in the field of conflict transformation  Relevant work experience in the field of peace and conflict research as well as conflict transformation  Experience in lobbying and advocacy, particularly in the areas of resource conflicts and conservation of livelihoods  Relevant work experience in Africa, especially in conflict areas and/or East Africa, is desirable

Skills  Very good knowledge of conflict analysis and research  Excellent communication skills, strategic negotiation skills and abilities in crisis communication  Ability to work in a team, flexibility and strong interpersonal skills; willingness to be tolerant of differing views  Appreciation of and adaptability in a multicultural working environment  Excellent knowledge of English; willingness to learn Kiswahili  Experience in building networks and creating synergies  Independent and effective way of working and ability to work under pressure  Strong research and writing skills  Willingness to travel to rural areas, regularly to Isiolo and to the capital for CPS coordination tasks  Valid driving licence / driving experience  Knowledge of social, economic and political contexts in Kenya is an advantage

Experience  At least three years of relevant experience in an advisory role in project management or in comparable conflict work  Knowledge in the conception, design and implementation of projects  Knowledge / experience with impact-oriented planning, monitoring and evaluation procedures  Practical knowledge of organisational and institutional development as well as identity and strategy building  Practical experience in working with NGOs and interacting with donor institutions
