6 2014 COLORADO STATE SOCCER THE MOUNTAIN WEST Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from a former 16-team conference re-established continuity and sta- bility among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Three of the MW’s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Di- ego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MW in 1999. TCU re-joined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06. With conference realignment sweeping the nation in Craig Thompson recent years, the MW has been proactive in addressing membership Commissioner changes. Boise State University joined the Mountain West in 2011-12, followed by Fresno State and the University of Nevada on July 1, 2012. Also on July 1, 2012, the University of Hawai‘i became a football-only member of the Conference. On July 1, 2013, the Mountain West further expanded when San Jose State University and Utah State University joined the Conference, bringing to 11 the number of full-time member institutions and 12 football-playing members.

When the Mountain West officially began operations on July 1, 1999, the new league had in place a seven-year contract with ESPN, giving the broadcaster exclusive national television rights to MW football and men’s , and three-year agreements to send the league’s foot- ball champion to the Liberty Bowl and a second team to the Las Vegas Javan Hedlund Dan Johnson Bowl. The Mountain West has marked several achievements over its first 14 years of existence, most notably becoming the first to establish a sports television network dedicated solely to an intercollegiate athletic conference (The Mtn.). The Mountain West also was the first to exper- iment with the coaches’ challenge in the college football instant replay system, and was the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS conference to participate in four BCS bowl games, winning three. Additionally, the Mountain West was the first conference to have a member institution with No. 1 overall picks in both the NFL and NBA drafts in the same year (Utah’s Alex Smith and Andrew Bogut, respectively in 2005). With San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg claiming the No. 1 pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the Mountain West is one of two conferences to have the No. 1 selection in each of the NFL, NBA and MLB drafts since the MW was founded in 1999. In 2011-12, the Mountain West was among the first conferences to implement a league-wide state-of-the-art basketball instant replay system.

The Mountain West is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, in- cluding the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders six MW institutions (Air Force, Boise State, Colorado Col- lege, Colorado State, New Mexico and Utah State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Divi- sion I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert cities of Las Vegas and Reno, home to UNLV and Nevada, respectively, while Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State add a West coast influence with their locations in Central, Southern and Northern Califor- nia. The inclusion of the Hawai‘i football program extends the Mountain West footprint to the beautiful islands in the Pacific Ocean. Regular Season Opener for Colorado St. Exhibition for LCU The Rams (1-0) jumped on the Chaps early on in the match when freshman midfielder Carly Seib Official'srebounded asignature shot and put it into the back of the net in just the sixth minute, scoring the first goal in CSU history.

In the 53rd minute, Sasha Pchenitchnikova added to the team’s lead, sliding the ball past the goalie with her left foot. Just eight minutes later, CSU tacked on another when Jessica Stauffer was able to find Erika Bratschun who finished it off to give the team a 3-0 lead with under 30 minutes to play.

From there, the Rams relied on their solid defense which limited the scoring opportunities for Lubbock Christian, allowing just 11 shots in the whole match and seven on goal.

“The back four was great,” Hempen said of his veteran-led defense. “Jessica (Stauffer), Jami (Vaughn), Megan (Speed) and Catherine (Ruder), they are rocks back there. They were in complete control and those kids did a great job.”

The second half featured much of the same statistically, with the Mustangs taking another nine shots in the half, including a goal in the 82nd minute, while limiting CSU to zero goal-scoring opportunities, but Hempen thought that the second half was much more competitive.

“The kids have been very patient with me and we changed some things up at halftime,” Hempen said. “We were much more direct in the second half and I thought we did a lot better.”

Freshman forward Riley Richardson crossed in a dangerous ball into the box which sophomore forward Cassie Beckwith controlled and found the back of the net with her shot to give her team the deciding goal in the match.

The last forty minutes were not without drama though, as CSU put the pressure on the GCU defense countless times. The Lopes withstood a furious last 10 minutes of the match in particular, in which the Rams recorded three shots and four corner kicks. In the 81st minute, sopho- more Sasha Pchenitnikova blasted a free kick from just outside of the box which had to be tipped over the crossbar.

Colorado State’s best scoring chance perhaps came in the 84th minute, when junior Catherine Ruder found herself behind the GCU defense. Facing a one-on-one with the keeper, Ruder elected to chip the ball over the charging goalie, but the ball just sailed high of the goal.

“They realized that they had to put some pressure on,” Hempen said. “They stepped up and did well. We changed some things around and put three in the back, three up front and four in the midfield just to see if we could match up and really make it difficult for them (GCU); which we did.”

The goal was the first of Eckert’s young career, who also played a career-high 110 minutes.

In the second half however, the Lumberjacks came out with a renewed energy and started to put more pressure on the Rams’ defense.

The Lumberjacks were persistent with their attack though, as Haley Wingender was able to put away the equalizer. Sarah Tarver sent a ball across the box to Wingender who was able to get a foot on the ball and hit it off the right post and into the back of the net. After 90 minutes of regulation, the teams were still all squared away and went into overtime to see if one team would emerge a winner.

Though there were plenty of opportunities for both teams, neither team was able to score in either of the 10 minute overtime periods and had to settle for a tie.

Official's signature For much of the first half, the two teams appeared to be incredibly even-matched teams. While both teams attempted the same number of shots in the first half, the Rams placed more on net.

In the 43rd minute, things changed when junior defender Tristyn Walczak put away her first goal of the season. Walczak received a cross from standout freshman Lauren Miller and headed the ball passed junior goalkeeper Maggie Sherman.

“It was an evenly matched game, but we gave up another set piece goal and that’s hard to swallow,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “We aren’t giving up goals in the run of play, but on set pieces and that’s bothersome. .

The second half of play resembled that of the first half as both teams looked like equal opponents. Unfortunately for Colorado State, being an equal opponent in the second half was not good enough as the team was not able to find a way to score the equalizer.

In the match, CSU took nine shots, in total including five on goal, while North Dakota State got off 11 shots and four on goal. The Bison found their biggest separation from the Rams in earning seven corner kicks while the Rams only had one.

Colorado State had seven separate players play all 90 minutes, including defenders and co-captains Megan Speed and Jami Vaughn. Through six matches, Speed and Vaughn are the only two players for the Rams to play every single possible minute this season.

“The kids are doing great,” Hempen said. They played very hard tonight and we are getting better.”

It was a match where both defenses refused to cave and kept their respective teams in the game. SIUE came into the match boasting a top 15 defense nationally, only allowing 0.415 goals per match and stopping 90.3 percent of the shots it has faced.

The Rams’ defense matched that execution as they posted their second shutout of the season this year.

While Colorado State couldn’t generate as much offense as SIUE, registering seven shots and three shots on goal, junior goalkeeper Maggie Sherman did her part to help the Rams earn a draw.

Sherman saved a career-high nine shots and posted her first career shutout in goal, as the Cougars desperately looked to find the game-win- ning goal to no avail.

SIUE took 18 shots in total and had three corner kicks compared to CSU’s one, but it made no difference on Sunday afternoon.

Erika Bratschun and Sasha Pchenitchnikova led Colorado State with two shots each, while Pchenitchnikova, Jessica Stauffer and Lizzy Gogolowski each recorded a shot on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Maggie Sherman closed down the angle though and stopped Moses’s shot to keep the score at 0-0 heading into intermission.

In the 50th minute, the Falcons got the goal they were searching for when Christy Cooper blasted a shot from 30 yards out over the out- stretched arms of Sherman.

The Rams wouldn’t wait long to get themselves back in the game. Just 13 minutes later in the 63rd minute, junior defender Catherine Ruder curved a free kick towards the back post where junior Erika Bratschun finished off with a header to square things up 1-1.

The two teams played fairly evenly for the duration of the match,, and after 90 minutes of action, neither team could find any separation so the two teams went into overtime where Air Force found a way to finish out the match.

After a handball in the 96th minute, the Falcons were awarded a free kick. Moses took the set piece and found Kristina O’Sullivan on the back post who headed it past Sherman to score the game-winning goal.

After Maggie Sherman got the start in goal for the Rams, CSU began the second half with Eidson as keeper, but after allowing two balls past her, Hempen decided Sherman would finish the match.

From the start, San Diego State showcased its talent as it relentlessly attacked Colorado State’s defense. In just the third minute of the match, Sophie Metz scored her first goal of the season on an assist from junior midfielder Hannah Keane to put the Aztecs up 1-0.

SDSU would add to its lead in the 19th minute when Keane finished off her conference-leading eight goal to give her team a 2-0 lead. The Aztecs scored its final goal of the match in the 32nd minute when Jensen Skinner found the back of the net.

In the match, San Diego State totaled 34 shots, but only nine were on target. The Aztecs also had 14 corner kicks in the match which kept the pressure on CSU’s defense.

The Rams managed just two shots in the game, including one on goal which came in a much more competitive second half. After relinquish- ing three goals in the first half, the defense shored up and kept San Diego State from adding to its total.

Seven players played all 90 minutes for the Rams, including co-captians Megan Speed and Jami Vaughn. Speed and Vaughn are two of just seven players in the Mountain West, not including goalies, that have played every single minute this year.

In the 18th minute Guice received a long through ball from senior midfielder Elba Holguin. Upon receiving the pass, Guice promptly placed the ball into the corner of the net to give New Mexico a 1-0 lead.

Just seven minutes later in the 25th minute, Guice again finished off a scoring chance, this time assisted from sophomore Dylann O’Connor to put the team up 2-0.

The Rams made a couple of lineup changes in teh second half, moving junior defender Jami Vaughn up to forward and junior defender Catherine Ruder in to the midfield. Hempen hoped the move would provide some more energy up top for the Rams.

As the two teams battled in the midfield to control possession and the match, Guice capitalized on her third scoring chance when she found herself on a breakaway against junior goalkeeper Maggie Sherman. The goal in the 69th minute gave Guice her hat trick and secured the victory for the Lobos.

As the team experimented with in the second half of the New Mexico match, Colorado State started the match with players playing in different positions. Normally a defender, junior Jami Vaughn moved up and played forward for the Rams, while junior defender Catherine Ruder played long stretches in the midfield for CSU.

With the new lineup on display, the Rams looked like an energized team. CSU played with great pace and looked dangerous on the attack in the early stages of the match.

As the two teams were still tied at 0-0 with the first half winding down, the Rams found the separation it needed. In the 38th minute, sophomore midfielder Sasha Pchenitchnikova provided the spark with a great individual effort after a terrific pass from freshman midfielder Amy Eckert. Pchenitchnikova caught the goalie out of position, dribbled around her, and slid the ball into the open net to give Colorado State a 1-0 lead.

“I thought she was going to blast it in,” Hempen said. “She beat the keeper and the defense was chasing her, and she rolled it in there. It was incredible, and it was a brilliant pass from Amy.”

Colorado State was seeking its second win of the week, and looked to defend in the early stages of the match.

While the Rebels applied pressure at the beginning of the match and looked to score an early goal, the Rams stayed composed on defense. Colorado State contained the UNLV attackers and limited the Rebels to very few scoring opportunities.

In the first half, UNLV registered 11 shots and four on goal, but none of them tested junior goalkeeper Maggie Sherman too much. The Rams, by comparison, had three shots and one shot on goal in the first half as the two teams went into halftime tied at 0-0.

The second half began much like the first half had started; the Rebels attacked, while the Rams defended vigorously.

In the 70th minute however, UNLV finally broke through and capitalized on a scoring chance. Freshman forward Dakota Blazak scored her first career goal when she found the back of the net on a play that was set up on a corner kick.

For the match, Sherman tied a career high with nine saves.

(79:52) - Playing on its practice field on campus due to snow closing down the Fort Collins Soccer Complex, the Colorado State Rams (2-10-2, 1-6-0) lost to the visiting Utah State Aggies (8-5-2, 4-2-0 MW) 3-0. State 4, Colorado State 0. Official's signature Throughout much of the match, both the Rams and Aggies looked to be equal competitors with much of the play being dictated in the mid- field. Colorado State had its best attack and scoring opportunities early on in the match. Its best opportunity came in the 14th minute when Ruder pushed forward and took a shot from 20 yards out that hit off the crossbar and bounced out-of-bounds.

Utah State found the spark it needed midway through the first half from its reserves though. Moments after being subbed in, freshman for- ward Jessica Brooksby capitalized on a ball sent in from Jessica Hoskin-Killpack and placed the ball past junior goalkeeper Maggie Sherman in the 24th minute.

In the 40th minute, the Aggies once again got a key play from a reserve when sophomore midfielder Maris Hamblin drifted a ball over the top of Sherman and into the corner of the net from the edge of the box to give Utah State a 2-0 lead. While only out-shooting the Rams 4-3 in the first half, the Aggies would take the 2-0 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, Utah State converted on its only shot on goal in the 70th minute when Jayne Robison hit a well-placed shot past freshman goalkeeper Elena Eidson, who entered in the second half for the Rams, and gave the Aggies a 3-0 lead.

For the match, Utah State only had four shots on goal, but it converted on three of them.

In the beginning minutes of the second half, Boise State got the bounce that it was looking for. As a ball was crossed into the box, Colorado State junior defender Jessica Stauffer tried to clear the ball, but the ball rolled up her leg and hit her hand resulting in a penalty kick for the Broncos. Brooke Heidemann converted the penalty kick to give Boise State a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute.

“Those are the kinds of things that you wish would happen to your team,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “That’s the way the ball is bouncing for this group though.”

Just four minutes later, the Broncos separated themselves from the Rams with a goal in the 58th minute from Ashley Hruby.

In the 89th minute, Boise State added a third goal from Baylee Blaser to secure the 3-0 victory.

In the opening minutes, the Rams took it right to Bulldogs on their home turf, and had a dangerous opportunity in the fourth minute as Sasha Pchenitchnikova blasted a shot just over the bar from 20-yards out.

In the 41st minute of the match, an unlucky bounce changed the tide of the match. A deep throw in to the box bounced in between Colorado State and Fresno State players battling for position. In the midst of the scrum, the ball bounced up and hit a CSU defender’s hand and result- ed in a penalty kick which Castain, the conference’s leading goal scorer, put away.

Just three minutes later, Fresno State capitalized on the momentum and scored a second goal, this time from Holsworth, to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Despite allowing the two goals late in the half, the Rams came out for the second half with a lot of passion and continued to put pressure on Fresno State. CSU just couldn’t find a way to get the ball in the net as it continued to trail by two goals for the majority of the half.

In the 81st minute, Castain scored her second goal of the match, and 12th of the season, as the Bulldogs caught the Rams’ defense out of position. The goal secured the 3-0 victory for Fresno State who outshot Colorado State 14-9.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Colorado State applied significant pressure to try and force overtime vs. San Official'sJosé State at signature Spartan Stadium, but the Rams weren’t able to find the back of the net, falling 1-0 Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans close out Mountain West action with a 2-6-1 record (3-13-1 overall), while the Rams finish their inaugural conference slate at 1-9-0 (2-13-2 overall).

SJSU’s Alexis Venegas buried her shot behind keeper Maggie Sherman in the 54th minute of play from inside the penalty box. Sherman faced 12 shots by the Spartans and had six saves on the day.

Hoping to create some momentum as the clock was winding down, CSU pushed everyone into the offensive zone in the final 8 minutes, including Megan Speed, who took over as keeper for the first time in a Rams’ uniform. The squad generated good chances, and had their best opportunity on a shot from Sasha Pchenitchnikova from just outside the box after maintaining possession on a cleared corner kick.

“Scoring goals has been an issue all season,” commented Head Coach Bill Hempen. “It’s not for lack of trying, but we lacked that instinctive personality to finish the opportunities we did create.”

San José State nearly muzzled CSU’s pressure with 3 minutes remaining on a shot from midfield that went just wide to left of the goal.

All told CSU tallied four shots on the day. Speed, Jami Vaughn, Amy Eckert, Catherine Ruder and Jessica Jochheim played the entire match.

Official's signature Knowing that they were playing in their last match of the season, the Rams looked determined to get a result against its rival. Just seven minutes into the match, Colorado State was rewarded for its early efforts with a goal from freshman midfielder Lizzy Gogolowski, the first of her career. The header goal was assisted from freshman midfielder Amy Eckert off of a corner kick, and was only a sign of the type of night that Gogolowski would have.

Colorado State looked to add to its lead as it continued to put the pressure on the Bears. The Rams were once again nearly rewarded for their efforts as freshman midfielder Carly Seib blasted a shot that hit off the post and bounced out of bounds in the 18th minute.

After withstanding the early pressure, Northern Colorado began to find its own rhythm in the match. In the 25th minute, Juliana Grover tied the match up for the Bears as she stepped in front of a CSU passing lane to secure possession and scored on a shot from 30-yards out. 10 minutes later, Sydney Schroeder got in on the scoring action as she rebounded her own shot into the net to give UNC a 2-1 lead which it took into halftime.

The Rams responded with the equalizer in the 69th minute as freshman midfielder Jessica Jochheim found Gogolowski for her second goal of the match. With the score all knotted up at 2-2 after the first 90 minutes, the teams went back to their benches and prepared for overtime. The Rams came out and looked to find a way to score the deciding goal, but were turned away on their two shots in the overtime periods. Northern Colorado also couldn’t muster any goals on its scoring opportunities, ending the match in a 2-2 draw.
