The CSJ’s mission is “to strive to move always towards profound love of God and love of neighbor without distinction.” The administration has also asked faculty and staff to reflect and carry in their everyday work their reasoning — their “why”— for choosing to work in the field of education, in a high school, in a Catholic high school, and, specifically, at Academy of Holy Angels.

By Julie Elsen Tvete ’73 and Brenda Elsen Elsagher ’74

Academy of Holy Angels was built by the Sisters of St. Joseph in the middle of an open field in Richfield during the great depression. Early images taken from a plane show a beautiful French Gothic structure surrounded by farm land, a railroad track, a gas station and a few small farms. The land around Holy Angels has always been precious, not only to AHA and to St. Peter’s, but to a special farmer and his family who lived on the corner of 68th and Nicollet. This story is about Ralph and Elsie Hollenback, and their history with Holy Angels during the early days of Richfield. When Holy Angels was built in 1931, Ralph Hollenback farmed some of the land around AHA. Over time he became friends with the AHA custodian. Eventually this custodian offered Ralph the opportunity of showering in the AHA utility room as the Hollenbacks did not yet have running water in their home. In exchange for that kindness, Ralph would hand pick and deliver fresh sweet corn, tomatoes, potatoes, Julie Elsen Tvete with Elsie and Ralph Hollenback in 1956 cantaloupe and watermelon for the nuns, teachers and students at Holy Angels. A few years later, and from 1936-1946, the Hollenbacks rented acreage from AHA to farm on the area that is now St. Peter’s. The Hollenback daughters, Betty and Ginny, took piano lessons at AHA on the fourth floor, beginning in 1939, from Sister Mary Alfred. Years later more children from the family would take piano lessons on the fourth floor from Sister Regina Marie and others. What a view these girls must have had out the the fourth floor piano windows of their parents farming the land south of AHA! Ginny (Hollenback) Hagen recently recalled, “The Academy of the Holy Angels was the most famous and beautiful landmark in all of Richfield.” Remembering from her childhood she said, “Nuns in their flowing habits were given permission to take a leisurely walk around the land surrounding AHA; always going out in twos. They would often stop at the Hollenback farm and mother would share
