  • Dave Brubeck's Definitive “Jazzanians”
Journal of Jazz Studies vol. 9, no. 1, pp. 53-93 (Summer 2013) Dave Brubeck’s Definitive “Jazzanians” Vasil Cvetkov On December 5, 2012, American contemporary music lost one of its most important personalities—pianist and composer Dave Brubeck, who died one day before his 92nd birthday. His death marks the passing of one of the most creative and versatile musicians in American history. Widely known as an innovative jazz musician, Brubeck’s skills in writing and arranging music for classical ensembles went far beyond jazz traditions, making him a subject of interest and investigation for contemporary music researchers. He became an emblematic figure for those, who, like me, received a classical music upbringing and became fascinated by his ability to fuse jazz and classical sources into the specific style that eventually became his trademark. Despite having received a classical education, I have always been attracted by the jazz sound, so that discovering and demonstrating the plenitude of Brubeck's legacy became a natural research goal in my graduate studies. In planning this personal tribute to the late Dave Brubeck, I came to the conclusion that, perhaps, the most eloquent examples of his unique compositional style could be demonstrated around the story of a little tetrachord. Throughout a period of 17 years (1987-2003), it inspired Brubeck to create five important compositions and came to be known, by those who love Brubeck's music, as the “Jazzanians tetrachord.” The compositions varied in form, covering the full spectrum of jazz, classical, and fusion styles. I call these compositions “realizations.” Trying to trace Brubeck’s realizations chronologically through that 17- year period, I first examined published scores but discovered that there were mysterious gaps.

  • The Unified Heart and the Blessing to End Disunity
A Brief Introduction to The Unified Heart and The Blessing to End Disunity And Other Spiritual Themes in Leonard Cohen’s Songs By David Peloquin “There are halls in the heavens above that open but to the voice of song” from the Zohar As I write this (February 2012), Leonard Cohen’s new masterpiece, Old Ideas , is taking the popular music world by storm. The enormous success of the recent world tour and the release of the Live in London (CD, DVD) and Songs From the Road (CD/DVD) have contributed greatly to this much deserved resurgence and appreciation of Leonard’s work. Songs from the new album Old Ideas will figure strongly in this study. This will be a brief introduction to some of the key spiritual themes in Cohen’s songs, especially The Unified Heart, and guide to a meditative approach to Cohen’s work in general. I believe that it is specifically the spiritual depth of Cohen’s work that has touched the hearts of so many in this troubled world for so many years. This kind of spirituality has little to do with theology or organized religion. It is a spirituality of personal experience, which is the essential element of the traditional mystic path. Leonard Cohen has been engaged in a life-long exploration of the great wisdom traditions, East and West. These include, at least: Indian philosophy, (Vedanta), Yoga, Taoism, Zen Buddhism, Judaism, (including Kabbalah) Christianity, Gnosticism, Sufism and Alchemy. He moves with great freedom and creativity within these traditions. Cohen’s focus has always been on esoteric mystical inner experience rather than exoteric doctrines and beliefs.

  • Richard Hunt Celebrates in Benton Harbor by Barbara Stodola Richard Hunt Has Reached a Point in Life Where He Could Have Settled Anyplace He Liked
THE TM 911 Franklin Street Weekly Newspaper Michigan City, IN 46360 Volume 21, Number 43 Thursday, November 3, 2005 Richard Hunt Celebrates in Benton Harbor By Barbara Stodola Richard Hunt has reached a point in life where he could have settled anyplace he liked. The place he chose was Benton Harbor, Michigan. Anyone familiar with the sculptor’s phenomenal success and internation- al connections might well wonder about this choice, until visiting his off-the-beaten-path studio -- and then the why’s and wherefore’s begin to fall into place. Richard Hunt, the acclaimed sculptor, stands beside models of his work at his studio in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The upcoming weekend is a good time to make the trip. It is 45 minutes from Michigan City, driving straight up the Red Arrow Highway and then turn- ing right before the St. Joseph River, veering toward the old downtown of Benton Harbor. Richard Hunt is opening his studio on Friday and Saturday evenings, to celebrate his 10th anniversary in the neighborhood he is helping to revitalize. His neighbors are celebrating too. On Saturday evening Nov. 5, a musical perfor- mance will take place at the First Presbyterian Church right up the street -- in fact, up the hill -- from Hunt’s studio. Three pianists will perform, each in a different style -- classical, jazz and gospel. The con- cert will be followed by an “Afterglow” at the artist’s studio. A special children’s event on Saturday after- noon will feature songs and stories by legendary per- Paying homage to the sea, this 50-foot-high sculpture of dazzling stain- former Ella Jenkins.
