Cork City is a City Rising. Retail units are opening for business in the €50m Capitol retail and office complex. Work has started on the €90 million Navigation House office development on Albert Quay and over the summer, Cork City Council agreed the sale of 7-9 Parnell Place and 1-2 Deane Street to Tetrarch Capital who propose to build a budget boutique hotel and designer hostel with ground floor restaurants and bars. Earlier this year, Boole House was handed over to UCC and also over the summer, the Presentation Sisters opened Nano Nagle Place on Douglas Street. This is all progress. Our strategy at Cork City Council has been to deliver for the Cork region through a revitalised, vibrant city centre – to our mind, the city centre is the ‘healthy heart’ of Cork.

  • Cork Planning Authorities Joint Retail Strategy
Cork City Council Cork County Council Metropolitan Cork Joint Retail Strategy December 2013 Midleton Town Council Cobh Town Council Draft Metropolitan Cork Joint Retail Strategy 1.0 Introduction 1.1 The Retail Planning Guidelines (RPG's) for Planning Authorities (2012), issued by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government, require Local Authorities to prepare retail strategies and policies for their areas and to incorporate these where appropriate into their development plan. The guidelines note that certain development plans and local area plans must be informed by joint or multi authority retail strategies which should assess retail activity and demand needs that transcend planning authority boundaries. The guidelines specifically identify that Cork City and County Councils should prepare a joint retail strategy. 1.2 John Spain Associates were commissioned in August 2012 by Cork City Council and Cork County Council to prepare a joint retail study for Metropolitan Cork. The strategy set out within this document is based upon the findings of the retail study which will replace the existing 2008 Cork Strategic Retail Study. The Metropolitan Cork Joint Retail Study is available online at www.corkcity.ie and www.corkcoco.ie It is envisaged that this joint retail strategy for the planning authorities in the City and County will be incorporated into the review of their respective development plans commencing in 2013. The strategy will form the agreed basis on which each authority will be able to formulate appropriate development plan objectives or policies for retail development in its areas and will be used in the determination of applications for planning permission.

  • Cork City Libraries Summer Reading Challenge 2019 | Join Red and His Friends for a Summer of Reading Fun | Register Now
corkcitylibraries.ie Events Edition July/August 2019 18 Photo Claire Keogh You hold in your hands a very special publication – the first Events of the New City. On 31 May many months of planning and preparation came to fruition when Ballincollig, Glanmire, and Blarney Libraries joined the City Libraries network. They join the other seven libraries – the City Library on Grand Parade, - Hollyhill, Blackpool and Mayfield libraries on the Northside, as well as Douglas, Tory Top and Bishopstown Libraries south of the river, making a much stronger library network. Cork City Council Libraries do not see the revision of the City Council boundary as the City Council Library Service expanding and, in the process, absorbing three new libraries and the surrounding catchment areas. Rather, we see it as an opportunity to create a new Library Service for a New City. We bring with us all that we as a service have learned in 127 years, our many strengths and achievements. We must be – and will be – open to other ideas and ways of doing things. We will be open to the experiences of the staff and patrons of our new libraries, in Ballincollig, Glanmire, and Blarney. Highlights this summer include Heritage Week, which runs from 17 to 25 August, ‘Branch Out and Read’, our summer reading challenge for kids as well as ‘The Summer School of Creative Writing’ which takes place in the City Library, Ballincollig and Glanmire Libraries. The new city will also see a host of exhibitions on display in all our libraries. Looking forward to seeing you, your family and friends in your local library during the first summer of our New City.

25 Years Serving the Local Community Mayfield Matter s Mayfield Community Training Centre FREE COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER, HIGHLIGHTING LOCAL NEWS St. Joseph’s Community Association ISSUE 64: Oct/Nov 2012 On 6th November, Mayfield Community Training Centre had an open day to celebrate 25 years of serv- Mayfield Banks Respond to Community Fears We return to the story of the two impending Bank closures planned for Mayfield. There is a palpable disappointment and resentment in the air all around the locality at the decisions taken by senior management at PTSB and AIB in this regard. Given the massive debts run up by our Banks during the “Celtic Tiger” years, these closures are not unexpected, though neither are they desirable. When Mayfield Matters contacted the Permanent Trustee Savings Bank (PTSB) for a comment, we were re-directed to its website. This offered nothing by way of apology to us in Mayfield, and indeed, lest we think that our branch is the only one for the chop, there will be fifteen other closures nationwide as well. Its version of good news is that; “There will be absolutely no change to your existing account(s) and all your account details will stay exactly the same”. If you have a PTSB account in Mayfield, you are directed to go to its North Main Street branch now, apparently for your convenience. The Credit Unions The picture with AIB is much clearer. Its local manager stressed that AIB has been building close links with the Post Office network for several years, seeking to share elements of its services with An Post.

It has been accepted for inclusion in BYU Family Historian by an authorized editor of BYU ScholarsArchive. For more information, please contact [email protected], [email protected]. RESEARCHING HUGUENOT SETTLERS IN IRELAND1 VIVIEN COSTELLO PREAMBLE This study is a genealogical research guide to French Protestant refugee settlers in Ireland, c. 1660–1760. It reassesses Irish Huguenot settlements in the light of new findings and provides a background historical framework. A comprehensive select bibliography is included. While there is no formal listing of manuscript sources, many key documents are cited in the footnotes. This work covers only French Huguenots; other Protestant Stranger immigrant groups, such as German Palatines and the Swiss watchmakers of New Geneva, are not featured. INTRODUCTION Protestantism in France2 In mainland Europe during the early sixteenth century, theologians such as Martin Luther and John Calvin called for an end to the many forms of corruption that had developed within the Roman Catholic Church. When their demands were ignored, they and their followers ceased to accept the authority of the Pope and set up independent Protestant churches instead. Bitter religious strife throughout much of Europe ensued. In France, a Catholic-versus-Protestant civil war was waged intermittently throughout the second half of the sixteenth century, followed by ever-increasing curbs on Protestant civil and religious liberties.3 The majority of French Protestants, nicknamed Huguenots,4 were followers of Calvin.
