At the May meeting the committee brainstormed for ideas on different things that could be done to improve the lagoon areas for both wildlife and people visiting. If you have ideas you would like to contribute, please forward to Ruth at [email protected] Bird of the Month: Taranui (Caspian Tern) Taranui are occasional visitors to the lagoon usually as solo or a pair of birds although 8 were spotted in the upper lagoon area recently. They are quite large Joy Justice - Instructor and attractive birds with grey upper body, white underneath, dark wing tips and a red bill. The birds seen recently are likely have arrived from the nearest nesting site close to Invercargill. Caspian terns are found in many other countries but numbers in New Zealand are small (1300-1400 breeding pairs).
