Distant Music An autoethnographic study of global songwriting in the digital age. SHEILA SIMMENES SUPERVISOR Michael Rauhut University of Agder, 2020 Faculty of Fine Arts Department of Popular music 2 Abstract This thesis aims to explore the path to music creation and shed a light on how we may maneuver songwriting and music production in the digital age. As a songwriter in 2020, my work varies from being in the same physical room using digital communication with collaborators from different cultures and sometimes even without ever meeting face to face with the person I'm making music with. In this thesis I explore some of the opportunities and challenges of this process and shine a light on tendencies and trends in the field. As an autoethnographic research project, this thesis offers an insight into the songwriting process and continuous development of techniques by myself as a songwriter in the digital age, working both commercially and artistically with international partners across the world. The thesis will aim to supplement knowledge on current working methods in songwriting and will hopefully shine a light on how one may improve as a songwriter and topliner in the international market. To do so, I provide both a neo-Aristotelian and biographical criticism of three songs from ye (2018) by Kanye West. Chapters 1 & 2 consider Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author and other landmark papers in rhetorical and literary theory to develop an intrinsic and extrinsic approach to criticizing ye (2018), evident in Tables 1 & 2. Chapter 3 provides the biographical antecedents of West’s life prior to the release of ye (2018). Chapters 4, 5, & 6 supply intrinsic (neo-Aristotelian) and extrinsic (biographical) critiques of the selected artifacts. Media Culture Media Culture develops methods and analyses of contemporary film, television, music, and other artifacts to discern their nature and effects. The book argues that media culture is now the dominant form of culture which socializes us and provides materials for identity in terms of both social reproduction and change. Through studies of Reagan and Rambo, horror films and youth films, rap music and African- American culture, Madonna, fashion, television news and entertainment, MTV, Beavis and Butt-Head, the Gulf War as cultural text, cyberpunk fiction and postmodern theory, Kellner provides a series of lively studies that both illuminate contemporary culture and provide methods of analysis and critique. Many people today talk about cultural studies, but Kellner actually does it, carrying through a unique mixture of theoretical analysis and concrete discussions of some of the most popular and influential forms of contemporary media culture. Criticizing social context, political struggle, and the system of cultural production, Kellner develops a multidimensional approach to cultural studies that broadens the field and opens it to a variety of disciplines. The Mostly Celtic Songbook Mostly Celtic Songbook 2 Introduction After sitting in on some of the former Tuesday evening open seisiúns at C.B. Hannegan’s in Los Gatos, and trying to sing along but not remembering the lyrics, it seemed like a good idea to compile a songbook that we could all potentially share. After one or two pints and a few encouraging words from Tony Becker, the idea became a project. So, here it is. In retrospect, it turned out to be more helpful to me than to the group, as most continued to use their own song collections. But at least I got most of the more frequently played songs together in one handy document, in keys that I can actually sing (the “suggested key”). It was well worth the effort, and a great way to learn the songs. In some cases, I took the liberty of editing some of the traditional lyrics for readability and sing-ability, especially the lyrics I got from the Web, and adding or changing a few chords, since many of the songs exist in several different versions anyway. Thanks to YouTube, I was able to correct a lot of mistakes. Some of the songs are still under copyright protection, so if I’ve given a wrong attribution, please send me a note so I can correct the error. A thousand apologies if that is the case. This book is intended for private use only, not for commercial publication. The chords are written in Nashville notation (well, sort of), so transposing is simple.
