WINTER RECESS 1 RETURN TO SCHOOL JANUARY 6, 2014 December 2013 9 Winter Reading By Kristin Dardano LMS To read digitally, or not to read digitally-- that is the question. The answer… it doesn’t matter as long as you’re reading! While I enjoy assisting our students in selecting a paper copy of a book to read from the library, I know that many of them prefer to read on tablets. I am happy to announce that we now have the capacity to lend books digitally through “OH!” It is a BOCES sponsored e-library! The product is very user friendly and is similar to borrowing e-books and audio books from the Mid York Library. While our Junior and Senior Highs have had this capability for awhile, elementary school content is newer to the system. If you and your child are interested in having access to this service please email me at [email protected] and I will set you up with an account and instructions on how to get started! Happy reading! In late November and early December each year, Mrs. Wagner and her class organize the annual Toys for Tots drive in our school building. Last year, 179 toys were collected for families in need. This year is our 7th annual toy drive and we hope to make a difference in the lives of many more children and their families! Here is a little history of Toys for Tots at E. R. Hughes! 07/08 - 234 toys collected 08/09 - 278 toys collected 09/10 - 284 toys collected 10/11 - 367 toys collected 11/12 - 264 toys collected 12/13 - 179 toys collected 6 year total - 1,606 toys collected Kindergarten Registration Tuesday, January 21st and Wednesday January 22nd 9:30 am to 11:30 am and 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm Please bring: Original Birth Certificate Immunization Records Proof of Residency Registration packets are available on-line. http://www.newhartfordschools.org Please register your child at the school that he or she will attend. These numbers are used to figure out the student’s body mass index or ‘BMI’. The BMI helps the doctor or nurse know if the student’s weight is in a healthy range or is too high or too low. Recent changes to the New York State Education Law require that BMI and weight status group be included as part of the student’s school health examination. A sample of school districts, including New Hartford, has been selected to take part in a survey by the New York Sate Department of Health. We will be reporting to New York State Department of Health information about our students’ weight status groups. Only summary information is sent. No names and no information about individual students are sent. However, you may choose to have your child’s information excluded from this survey report. The information sent to the New York State Department of Health will help health officials develop programs that make it easier for children to be healthier. If you do not wish to have your child’s weight status group information included as part of the Health Department’s survey this year, please send a note to your school nurse, by December 20, 2013 and call the Health Office to inform them. Thank you. NHCSD Health Offices 4 December 2013 9 Nurse’s Notes KEEPING YOUR FAMILY HEALTHY THROUGHOUT THE HOLIDAYS AND ALWAYS. Don’t let then ice weather fool you--bug borne illness can occur any time of the year. Follow these basic steps to help keep your family healthy through the year: Teach children to wash their hands at these key times: after going to the bathroom, petting an animal, playing outside and before eating. Do hand washing right: With soap and water, it takes 20 seconds of scrubbing to kill the germs that need to be killed. Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer with you for visits to playgrounds, mall food courts, and other places where there might not be a sink handy. Be sure to cover every part of the hand, including under the nails, if possible. After preparing meat or poultry, wash cutting boards with hot, soapy water and spray counter tops with disinfectant. The bacteria commonly found on raw meats, including campylobacter, salmonella and E. coli--are more dangerous than any other germs you’’re likely to have in the house. Wash small cuts and scrapes with soap and water. Apply an antibacterial ointment, put on a bandage, and change the bandage every day until the wound heals. Make sure your children are up to date on their vaccinations, and consider getting them a flu shot. A school age child who’s been vaccinated against the flu is less likely to bring home a bug that can infect the entire family. If someone in your house is sick, take a moment to clean doorknobs, television remotes toys and other items your children touch throughout the day. www.flu.gov is a good resource to keep yourself updated through the flu season. Winter is almost upon us! Please be sure your children are dressed appropriately (ie:warm layers, hats, gloves or mittens, boots ETC.) We continue to enjoy a few minutes of fresh air after lunch and your child will enjoy that time much more if dressed appropriately. You lose a lot of heat through your head and neck. Wear a hat and you’ll put a lid on the heat your body needs.

Petition for Rulemaking REC Networks “Simple LP250” Before the FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION Washington, DC In the matter of: ) ) RM-________________ Amendment of Parts 73 and 74 of the ) Commission’s Rules to create a second class ) MB Docket No. ____________ of service for Low Power FM broadcast ) stations ) SUMMARY Originally created in response to the decreased diversity in broadcast choices and voices, the Commission, under the leadership of former Chairman William Kennard created the Low Power FM (LPFM) radio service to bring new voices to the airwaves that would otherwise not have a voice. In the past 20 years, we have seen many interesting organizations extend their educational outreach programs to include radio. During this time, we have heard the airwaves graced with everything from story readings to whale songs. LPFM stations have been a form of artistic expression exposing the general public to new local music artists and exposing them to music genres that they would have never otherwise considered. LPFM stations have given voices to various minority communities, such as our Somali American and Haitian American communities that otherwise would have no voice on our airwaves. In places like Detroit and Philadelphia, LPFM has brought the voices back to the community. With an effective range of 3 ½ miles, 100-watt LPFM stations have been effective in larger population centers. Then, there is the rest of America. In small town America where radio stations are fewer and where any kind of coverage outside of a Nielsen market is nearly nonexistent and with more room on the dial, LPFM stations in these areas are doing the best they can by providing news, weather, emergency information, agricultural updates and overall companionship.
