Migration, Modernity and Memory: the Archaeology of the Twentieth Century in a Northeast Pennsylvania Coal Company Town, 1897-2014 ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: MIGRATION, MODERNITY AND MEMORY: THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY IN A NORTHEAST PENNSYLVANIA COAL COMPANY TOWN, 1897-2014 Michael P. Roller, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Professor Paul A. Shackel Department of Anthropology The Lattimer Massacre occurred in September of 1897 in the anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania. It has been described as the bloodiest massacre of the nineteenth century. In this event, a company-sponsored sheriff and a posse of local businessmen shot into a crowd of striking Eastern European mine laborers, resulting in the deaths of at least nineteen. However, the great significance of the event is not in the body count but the material contexts of its occurrence as well as its pre- and post- histories. Moreover, while the event can be securely consigned to history, the capitalist processes punctuated by this instance of violence are present throughout the century since its occurrence. In the region, coal company towns materialized carefully maintained racialized labor hierarchies in which new immigrants were confined to shanty towns at the periphery. The dissertation operates on an archaeological scale stretched across the longue durée of the twentieth century, documenting the transformation of a shanty town into an American suburb over the course of a century. The archaeological evidence hails from three excavations including a survey of the site of the Massacre and excavations of lots in the shanty enclave. This dissertation examines the trajectory of these settlements across the entire span of the twentieth century. With its primary evidence derived from waste, ruins, surpluses and redundancies accumulated over time, archaeological tellings of history recognize these aspects not simply for their contingency, but their centrality within capitalist social life across the passage of time. In this dissertation, I propose that a critical historical archaeology can contribute substantially to a nuanced understanding of the ironic developments of late twentieth century political economy. Contradiction, sovereignty, governmentality, states of exception, surplus enjoyment, cycles of creative destruction and reterritorialization, renewal, and subjectivation are explored by juxtaposing, grafting and merging archaeological evidence with social theory, textual evidence, ethnographic data and interdisciplinary scholarship to present an archaeological history greater than the sum of its parts. The result is both a history of the community and a schematic for an archaeological history of the twentieth century. We took it as a sort of symbolic day on which is unleashed… all the conditioning, all the needed facts, just because the day itself has happened. But it does not only contain the past; it also contains the future. Bernardo Bertolucci (1975: 12). The Lattimer Massacre occurred in September of 1897 in the anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania. It has been described as the bloodiest massacre of the nineteenth century (Beik 1999). In this event shaded with brutality and the persistent fog of forgetting, a company-sponsored sheriff and a posse of local businessmen shot into a crowd of striking mine laborers of Eastern European origin. At least nineteen were killed instantly and more than forty were injured in addition (Pinkowski 1950; Novak 1996). The marchers were among a diverse group of immigrant laborers from Southern and Eastern Europe striking in the region for over a month for better wages, just and humane treatment, and better working and living conditions despite their status as new immigrants. Carrying the American flag on their march, they sought these rights as aspiring citizens of their newly adopted country. In the century since its occurrence, the Lattimer Massacre has been monumentalized, recalled, suppressed, reinterpreted, evoked, forgotten and rediscovered. Frequently, the memory of the event operates as a kind of critical iv constellation of social realities, reflecting contemporary discourses of class antagonism, capitalism and inequality, citizenship, and pluralist identity. While the archaeology, archival documentation and personal stories recounted in this dissertation range across the twentieth century and into the present, it is shot through with the image and memory of the Lattimer Massacre of 1897 and the milieu of racialized class tension that surrounds it. Naturally, the great significance of the event is not the body count but the circumstances of its occurrence and its memory: its pre- and post- history. Like the opening quote from Bernardo Bertolucci’s Novecento, an epic film about the growth of historical consciousness in the Italian peasantry, it is a day that, “…does not only contain the past; it also contains the future” (Bertolucci 1975: 12). Within the region at the time, coal mining company towns materialized carefully maintained racialized labor hierarchies. New immigrants were confined to shanty towns at the periphery, marking difference through distinctions of space, architecture and infrastructure. In this dissertation I propose that these material realities made it all too easy for violence to be perpetrated. Theorist Slavoj Žižek (2008:2) suggests that focusing on moments of explicit subjective violence can mislead us from recognizing the presence of subtler forms of ideological violence he describes as symbolic and systemic consisting of the antagonism at the heart of language and other forms of representation. In the context of this research I interpret this notion of representation as the construction of social identifications including those of race and ethnicity, which depend upon material and semiotic content for their construction and v maintenance. While Žižek hints at the materiality inherent in these dimensions of violence, it is clear he does not have access to the kinds of evidence archaeologists are privy to through their particular epistemological approach. Archaeological data is central to the aims of this research in three ways. First, in critically recognizing the material manifestations of power, domination and its contestations, this history is situated in the dynamics of grounded moments and settings (Leone 2005, 2010; Leone et al. 1987: 284; Matthews 2002; Palus et al. 2006). Secondly, the material investigations presence or materialize lost or suppressed memories of forgotten and difficult histories for the public (Buchli and Lucas 2001). This engagement, in turn presents the research further opportunities to explore the interactions between memory and materials fundamental to the investigation. A third role for material evidence is in adding alternative avenues of analysis and discourse to histories that continue to have implications for present communities (Little 1994; Mayne 2008; Shackel and Chambers 2004; Shackel and Gadsby 2011). The first chapter of the dissertation provides contextual information for the dissertation including an explanation of the, perhaps unusual temporal structure of the dissertation. This explanation proceeds by providing both a contemporary context for research as well as a theoretical foundation for the seven chapters that follow. The second chapter provides a history of the anthracite industry of Northeast Pennsylvania,

Fleenor, Jr. Copyright and All Rights Reserved Big Stone Gap, Virginia Dec. 15, 2018 The Leisenring and Wentz families of Pennsylvania were intermarried, and were related to several other Pennsylvania German families who were wealthy anthracite coal mine owners. This “hard coal” was necessary for the making of iron and steal, and these families became wealthy as a result of the Civil War. Dr. John Wentz married Mary Leisenring. He was a doctor in the Union Army during the Civil War, but afterwards forsook medicine for the coal industry. The anthracite deposits in Pennsylvania began to play out just as the industrial age was beginning in the years after the Civil War. During that war, the industrialists in Virginia had learned that one could take bituminous coal (soft coal), turn it into coke by the same process that wood is turned into charcoal, and use that coke in the making of iron and of steal. In the 1880’s the Wentz and Leisenring families, together with related people, bought up the most valuable of the soft coal lands in the country. They bought Black Mountain, which forms the border between Kentucky and Virginia. They did so both as individuals, and under various corporate structures. John sold his and Mary’s private interests on the Kentucky side of Black Mountain to United States Steel and to International Harvester, and used the cash thus generated to develop the remaining deposits in Virginia. Dr. John and Mary Wentz decided to set their sons up in their Virginia business ventures.

    PARDEE, MARY ALLISON, 1841-1889 SKILLMAN LIBRARY DIARY, 1871 LAFAYETTE COLLEGE BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Mary Allison Pardee was born on October 30, 1841, in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, the daughter of James Willitts Allison and Mary MClelland Boal. In 1860, on her nineteenth birthday, she married Ariovistus (“Ario”) Pardee, Jr. in Sugarloaf, Pennsylvania. Nicknamed “the General,” Ario was a Civil War veteran who had ascended the ranks to brigadier general by the end of his service. After the war, Ario returned to Hazleton, Pennsylvania and worked in the family coal business, A. Pardee & Company, along with his father and brother Calvin. However, Ario had contracted dysentery during the war which compromised his health for the rest of his life, preventing him from taking a more active role in the running of the family business. Ario’s health continued to deteriorate and on a doctor’s recommendation, Mary and Ario embarked on their first extensive trip abroad in May 1868. Their travels took them throughout Europe, to countries including England, Scotland, France, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy, among others. The Pardees returned to Hazleton in July 1869 but Ario’s health failed to improve and two years later, his doctors suggested another trip abroad. Mary and Ario departed New York for the second time in May 1871, setting sail for Queenstown, Ireland, accompanied by Ario’s sister Alice, her husband James Earle and their son Edgar. Mary and Ario travelled throughout Ireland and England, spending a month each in Warwick and Torquay. From there, they traveled to Paris, Geneva, Spain, Morocco, and the French Riviera, returning to New York in 1873.

Leone Department of Anthropology Coal company towns are defined by the experiences of the men who owned and the men who worked in the mines, broadly ignoring the women and families who also inhabited and toiled in these spaces. In the Northeastern Pennsylvania anthracite region, women undertook a variety of methods to change their social positions through the renegotiation of their gender, ethnic, and class identities. Performing ‘proper’ middle class American gender expressions, including through the adoption of culturally-coded objects, provided working class women with greater social power and cultural autonomy within the context of systemic worker deprivation and ubiquitous corporate domination. Drawing on identity performance theories, material culture theories related to gender, class, and migration, and theories of the built environment, I examine how women established identities based in and reinforced by material culture and spatial organization Drawing on archaeologically recovered material culture, oral histories, archival research, and architectural data, I demonstrate the ways in which working class women used cultural norms to elevate themselves and their status within their communities. Women were able to balance their needs with ubiquitous gender oppression within working class industrial society by mastering the tasks assigned to women – responsibilities as mothers, familial ministers, household managers, and feminine matrons – and using those positions to pursue what they needed for their own survival. These identities were further negotiated and enforced by the built environment.

    Look homeward, Hazleton By Charles McElwee Ariovistus Pardee, perpetually restless, took a stroll along the mossy, muggy paths of his summer retreat in Rockledge, Florida. Rarely idle and always pensive, Pardee needed the walk, and so he marched onward, betraying and discrediting the infirmity and maladies usually associated with an 82-year-old man. He was distinguished looking, but his gentle facial features didn’t suggest an unrivaled ingenuity or a $30 million net worth. Pardee attentively maintained a humble disposition, and despite his age and accomplishments, he walked as if he was still in his youth, a time when he surveyed dense Pennsylvania forests, discovered opportunity in anthracite coal and railroads, and built an empire in a small remote village called Hazleton. But on that warm Friday evening, after a lifetime of steady heartbeats and strenuous exercise, Pardee had succumbed to fatigue. He returned to his cottage, and the doctor who accompanied him on this winter sojourn advised against eating. Pardee disregarded the doctor’s orders, and as the twilight hours passed he slipped into a worsening state. His wife and three daughters fearfully awaited the outcome, watching over a patriarch who, up until that evening, was in remarkable health. As dawn neared, the sun slowly rising in the swampy Victorian hamlet, the family watched Pardee in his final, silent moments. Pardee’s legacy When Pardee died on March 26, 1892, he was the country’s leading anthracite operator. His extensive land holdings spanned the East Coast and Midwest, and the resources found within these holdings fueled railcars, built houses, defended armies and contributed to America’s gilded expansion.

In review, most of the SLCs seen were either rust buckets or mechanical disasters! So, a refocus was done, to look at W123 Mercedes models. Most folks in the USA know the W123 Mercedes model as the 240/280/300 sedans made from 1975-1985. Mercedes also made a coupe and a station wagon during the same period. The W123 model line is really the car that sold Mercedes to the world on a wide scale, and many still operate today as taxis around the world.
