Introduction to Conjunctions, Disjunctions, and Negations (3.1, 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4 of the Text) 1. Introduction 1.1 Moving from atomic sentences to compound sentences one single predicate Simple sentences: no truth-functional connectives. Sentences More than one predicate Compound sentences Two or more simple sentences connected by some truth- functional connectives. For example: John is a student and Joe is a teacher. John or Joe is a student = John is a student or Joe is a student. If John is a student, then Joe is a teacher. John is not a student. 1.2 Truth-functional vs. Non-truth-functional sentences. Definition: a compound sentence is truth-functional iff the truth-value of the sentence is fully determined by the truth-value of its component simple sentences. Then the connectives connected component sentences of a truth-functional sentence is truth- functional connectives. They are: conjunction, disjunction, negation, and conditional. Semantics of truth-functional connectives 3.1 Truth-table definitions: Suppose that P and Q here represent any sentence (either simple or compound sentences). Definition: Two sentences are logically equivalent iff they have same truth value in exactly the same circumstances (under any possible interpretation / in any possible world). Illustrations: 1.1 In the language of the Tarski’s World (with fixed interpretation) a is to one side or other of cube b, but is in front of dodecahedron c. Suppose that you have two different translations of the above English sentence as follows: (a) [Cube(b) ∧ ( LeftOf(a, b) ∨ RightOf(a, b) ) ] ∧ [Dodec(c) ∧ FrontOf (a, c)] (b) [ (Cube(b) ∧ LeftOf(a, b)) ∨ (Cube(b) ∧ RightOf(a, b)) ] ∧ [Dodec(c) ∧ FrontOf (a, c)] Are sentence (a) and (b) logically equivalent? To determine this, you need to see whether they always have the same truth value in any Tarski’s world. If they always have the same truth value in any Tarski’s world, then they are logically equivalent (Question: How can you do this???). If they do not have the same truth value in one Tarski’s world, then they are not logically equivalent (an counterexample). 1.2 In any formal language (a) ¬ (P(a) ∧ Q(a)) (b) ¬ P(a) ∧ ¬ Q(a) Are the above sentences in FOL logically equivalent? To find out, let us give a possible interpretation to the predicates and names under considerations. Suppose: P(x): x is a student. Q(x): x is a female. a: Sean Under this interpretation, sentence (a) means that it is not the case that Sean is a female student or Sean is not a female student (but Sean may be a student). Sentence (b) says that Sean is not a female, and Sean is not a student either. Suppose further that Sean is a male student in a possible world. Then under the above interpretation and in the above circumstance, sentence (a) is true but sentence (b) is false. In conclusion, sentences (a) and (b) are not logically equivalent (since we have found one possible world in which they do not have the same truth value). 2. How to test logical equivalency? There are many different formal methods to test for logical equivalency. If they have the same truth values at all rows, then they are logically equivalent. Otherwise they are not. A standard of a correct translation A (not the) logical symbolization of an English sentence is correct iff both are logically equivalent. 2. Tips for translations involving conjunctions, disjunctions and negations (1) Identify the primary connective of the original English sentence to be translated. Example: Both d and c are cubes; moreover neither of them is small. Primary (Cube(d) ∧ Cube(c)) ∧ (¬ Small(d) ∧ ¬ Small(c)) (2) Paraphrase, if necessary, the sentences to be translated before translation (as long as they are both logically equivalent).     Classifying Material Implications over Minimal Logic Hannes Diener and Maarten McKubre-Jordens March 28, 2018 Abstract The so-called paradoxes of material implication have motivated the development of many non- classical logics over the years [2–5, 11]. In this note, we investigate some of these paradoxes and classify them, over minimal logic. We provide proofs of equivalence and semantic models separating the paradoxes where appropriate. A number of equivalent groups arise, all of which collapse with unrestricted use of double negation elimination. Interestingly, the principle ex falso quodlibet, and several weaker principles, turn out to be distinguishable, giving perhaps supporting motivation for adopting minimal logic as the ambient logic for reasoning in the possible presence of inconsistency. Keywords: reverse mathematics; minimal logic; ex falso quodlibet; implication; paraconsistent logic; Peirce’s principle. 1 Introduction The project of constructive reverse mathematics [6] has given rise to a wide literature where various the- orems of mathematics and principles of logic have been classified over intuitionistic logic. What is less well-known is that the subtle difference that arises when the principle of explosion, ex falso quodlibet, is dropped from intuitionistic logic (thus giving (Johansson’s) minimal logic) enables the distinction of many more principles. The focus of the present paper are a range of principles known collectively (but not exhaustively) as the paradoxes of material implication; paradoxes because they illustrate that the usual interpretation of formal statements of the form “. → . .” as informal statements of the form “if. then. ” produces counter-intuitive results. Some of these principles were hinted at in [9]. Here we present a carefully worked-out chart, classifying a number of such principles over minimal logic.

From a conjunction, infer any of the conjuncts. • From P ∧ Q, infer P (or infer Q). Conjunction introduction Sometimes called conjunction. From a pair of sentences, infer their conjunction. • From P and Q, infer P ∧ Q. § 5.2 Proof by cases This is another valid inference step (it will form the rule of disjunction elimination in our formal deductive system and in Fitch), but it is also a powerful proof strategy. In a proof by cases, one begins with a disjunction (as a premise, or as an intermediate conclusion already proved). One then shows that a certain consequence may be deduced from each of the disjuncts taken separately. One concludes that that same sentence is a consequence of the entire disjunction. • From P ∨ Q, and from the fact that S follows from P and S also follows from Q, infer S. The general proof strategy looks like this: if you have a disjunction, then you know that at least one of the disjuncts is true—you just don’t know which one. So you consider the individual “cases” (i.e., disjuncts), one at a time. You assume the first disjunct, and then derive your conclusion from it. You repeat this process for each disjunct. So it doesn’t matter which disjunct is true—you get the same conclusion in any case. Hence you may infer that it follows from the entire disjunction. In practice, this method of proof requires the use of “subproofs”—we will take these up in the next chapter when we look at formal proofs.

    Chapter 18 Negation Jong-Bok Kim Kyung Hee University, Seoul Each language has a way to express (sentential) negation that reverses the truth value of a certain sentence, but employs language-particular expressions and gram- matical strategies. There are four main types of negatives in expressing sentential negation: the adverbial negative, the morphological negative, the negative auxil- iary verb, and the preverbal negative. This chapter discusses HPSG analyses for these four strategies in marking sentential negation. 1 Modes of expressing negation There are four main types of negative markers in expressing negation in lan- guages: the morphological negative, the negative auxiliary verb, the adverbial negative, and the clitic-like preverbal negative (see Dahl 1979; Payne 1985; Zanut- tini 2001; Dryer 2005).1 Each of these types is illustrated in the following: (1) a. In pursuit of enhancing the deductive power of Direct Logic while avoiding explosiveness, Hewitt has proposed including the law of excluded middle and proof by self-refutation. In this paper, I show that the inclusion of either one of these inference patterns causes paracon- sistent logics such as Hewitt's Direct Logic and Besnard and Hunter's quasi-classical logic to become explosive. 1 Introduction A central goal of a paraconsistent logic is to avoid explosiveness { the inference of any arbitrary sentence β from an inconsistent premise set fp; :pg (ex falso quodlibet). Hewitt [2] Direct Logic and Besnard and Hunter's quasi-classical logic (QC) [1, 5, 4] both seek to preserve the deductive power of classical logic \as much as pos- sible" while still avoiding explosiveness. Their work fits into the ongoing research program of identifying some \reasonable" and \maximal" subsets of classically valid rules and axioms that do not lead to explosiveness. To this end, it is natural to consider which classically sound deductive rules and axioms one can introduce into a paraconsistent logic without causing explo- siveness. Hewitt [3] proposed including the law of excluded middle and the proof by self-refutation rule (a very special case of proof by contradiction) but did not show whether the resulting logic would be explosive. In this paper, I show that for quasi-classical logic and its variant, the addition of either the law of excluded middle or the proof by self-refutation rule in fact leads to explosiveness.

In his calculus, functions can be encoded to expressions and continuations using primitive operators. That is, the duality of functions is not derived in the calculus but adopted as a principle of the calculus. In this paper, we propose a simple symmetric lambda-calculus corresponding to the negation-free natural deduction based bilateralism in proof-theoretic semantics. In our calculus, continuation types are represented as not negations of formulae but formulae with negative polarity. Function types are represented as the implication and but-not connectives in intuitionistic and paraconsistent logics, respectively. Our calculus is not only simple but also powerful as it includes a call-value calculus corresponding to the call-by-value dual calculus invented by Wadler. We show that mutual transformations between expressions and continuations are definable in our calculus to justify the duality of functions. We also show that every typable function has dual types. It is argued that a full account of the processes and levels of representation involved in their interpretation typically requires the sequential pragmatic derivation of two different propositions expressed. The first is one in which the presupposition is preserved and, following the rejection of this, the second involves the echoic (metalinguistic) use of material falling in the scope of the negation. The semantic base for these processes is the standard anti- presuppositionalist wide-scope negation. A different view, developed by Burton- Roberts (a, b), takes presupposition to be a semantic relation encoded in natural language and so argues for a negation operator that does not cancel presuppositions.

Ladusaw University of California, Santa Cruz Introduction* My focus in this paper is the syntax-semantics interface for the interpretation of negation in languages which show negative concord, as illustrated in the sentences in (1)-(4). (1) Nobody said nothing to nobody. [NS English] ‘Nobody said anything to anyone.’ (2) Maria didn’t say nothing to nobody. [NS English] ‘Maria didn’t say anything to anyone.’ (3) Mario non ha parlato di niente con nessuno. [Italian] ‘Mario hasn’t spoken with anyone about anything.’ (4) No m’ha telefonat ningú. [Catalan] ‘Nobody has telephoned me.’ Negative concord (NC) is the indication at multiple points in a clause of the fact that the clause is to be interpreted as semantically negated. In a widely spoken and even more widely understood nonstandard dialect of English, sentences (1) and (2) are interpreted as synonymous with those given as glosses, which are also well-formed in the dialect. The examples in (3) from Italian and (4) from Catalan illustrate the same phenomenon. The occurrence in these sentences of two or three different words, any one of which when correctly positioned would be sufficient to negate a clause, does not guarantee that their interpretation involves two or three independent expressions of negation. These clauses express only one negation, which is, on one view, simply redundantly indicated in two or three different places; each of the italicized terms in these sentences might be seen as having an equal claim to the function of expressing negation. However closer inspection indicates that this is not the correct view.

    Relevant and Substructural Logics GREG RESTALL∗ PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT, MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY [email protected] June 23, 2001 http://www.phil.mq.edu.au/staff/grestall/ Abstract: This is a history of relevant and substructural logics, written for the Hand- book of the History and Philosophy of Logic, edited by Dov Gabbay and John Woods.1 1 Introduction Logics tend to be viewed of in one of two ways — with an eye to proofs, or with an eye to models.2 Relevant and substructural logics are no different: you can focus on notions of proof, inference rules and structural features of deduction in these logics, or you can focus on interpretations of the language in other structures. This essay is structured around the bifurcation between proofs and mod- els: The first section discusses Proof Theory of relevant and substructural log- ics, and the second covers the Model Theory of these logics. This order is a natural one for a history of relevant and substructural logics, because much of the initial work — especially in the Anderson–Belnap tradition of relevant logics — started by developing proof theory. The model theory of relevant logic came some time later. As we will see, Dunn's algebraic models [76, 77] Urquhart's operational semantics [267, 268] and Routley and Meyer's rela- tional semantics [239, 240, 241] arrived decades after the initial burst of ac- tivity from Alan Anderson and Nuel Belnap. The same goes for work on the Lambek calculus: although inspired by a very particular application in lin- guistic typing, it was developed first proof-theoretically, and only later did model theory come to the fore.
