2 The Bridge Nursing Professor’s Book Chronicles North Country TB Treatment

A faculty member in SUNY Institute of Technology’s School of Nursing has written a book about the innovative tubercu- losis sanatorium that flourished in Saranac Lake, N.Y., for 70 years. “Portrait of Healing: Curing in the Woods,” by Dr. Victoria E. Rinehart, associate professor, is published by North Country Books. It tells the story of Dr. Edward L. Trudeau, founder of the Trudeau Sanatorium in Saranac Lake, who pioneered a treatment for tuberculosis pa- tients that became the model for TB care in the United States. His revolutionary approach provided patients with fresh air, good food and rest so that their bodies could heal themselves. “Portrait of Healing” recounts “Doonesbury” cartoonist how Dr. Trudeau, a TB patient Garry Trudeau, Dr. Trudeau’s himself, came to build the first great-grandson, calls “Portrait tuberculosis sanatorium in of Healing” “delightful… lov- America deep in the ingly research and gracefully the book will be donated to the Adirondack wilderness starting presented.” In the book’s fore- Trudeau Institute Biomedical in 1884.
