Jazz got its start in the streets of New Orleans. This unique art form allows individuals to come together to pool their talent and create beautiful music.

I have seen firsthand the power of jazz to bring people together. Various players on different instruments strive — sometimes in harmony and sometimes with a single performer enjoying a moment in the spotlight — to produce something wonderful.

As anyone who has been to New Orleans for Mardi Gras will know, jazz has a way of elevating the mood and forging a common bond. It not only unifies the musicians, but it also inspires and energizes everyone around them who hears their songs.

Great leaders can take a cue from the world of jazz. True leadership is about drawing on the skill and passion of every player. Sometimes a solo performance by one member of the ensemble is called for, while at other times collaboration is the order of the day. Whatever the notes, a leader must inspire others to draw out great performances.

Leaders are vital in steering our industry forward. The challenges are many and we need strong leaders to bring people together. I encourage you to Jazz up your Leadership at the annual conference of the Ontario Real Estate Association.
