  • The First Critical Assessments of a Streetcar Named Desire: the Streetcar Tryouts and the Reviewers
FALL 1991 45 The First Critical Assessments of A Streetcar Named Desire: The Streetcar Tryouts and the Reviewers Philip C. Kolin The first review of A Streetcar Named Desire in a New York City paper was not of the Broadway premiere of Williams's play on December 3, 1947, but of the world premiere in New Haven on October 30, 1947. Writing in Variety for November 5, 1947, Bone found Streetcar "a mixture of seduction, sordid revelations and incidental perversion which will be revolting to certain playgoers but devoured with avidity by others. Latter category will predomin ate." Continuing his predictions, he asserted that Streetcar was "important theatre" and that it would be one "trolley that should ring up plenty of fares on Broadway" ("Plays Out of Town"). Like Bone, almost everyone else interested in the history of Streetcar has looked forward to the play's reception on Broadway. Yet one of the most important chapters in Streetcar's stage history has been neglected, that is, the play's tryouts before that momentous Broadway debut. Oddly enough, bibliographies of Williams fail to include many of the Streetcar tryout reviews and surveys of the critical reception of the play commence with the pronouncements found in the New York Theatre Critics' Reviews for the week of December 3, 1947. Such neglect is unfortunate. Streetcar was performed more than a full month and in three different cities before it ever arrived on Broadway. Not only was the play new, so was its producer. Making her debut as a producer with Streetcar, Irene Selznick was one of the powerhouses behind the play.

  • The Impossible Object of Love: Shakespeare, Billy Wilder and Freud
PROBLEMIThe INTERNATIONAL, Impossible Object ofvol. Love: 1 no. Shakespeare, 1, 2017 © Society Billy for Wilder Theoretical and Freud Psychoanalysis The Impossible Object of Love: Shakespeare, Billy Wilder and Freud Gregor Moder After killing the old, inept Polonius, the young prince hides the dead body somewhere inside the Elsinore palace. This is a great nuisance to King Claudius, who dispatches his two henchmen, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to retrieve the body of the late Lord Chamberlain. Upon being asked where the body was, prince Hamlet delivers a rather cryptic line: “The body is with the King, but the King is not with the body” (Hamlet, 4.2.26–27). It is a very well known line, but it is hard to say what exactly to make of it. It seems to be a reference to King Claudius himself more than it is a reference to Polonius. It seems to hint at the doctrine of King’s two bodies, the political theological notion of the separation of the King’s mortal natural body and the King’s immortal political body. Hamlet clearly doesn’t think much of Claudius as he continues: “The King is a thing […] of nothing” (Hamlet, 4.2.27–29). While there are many interpretations of these words readily available, we shall turn to one in particular, to Jacques Lacan’s, because it will lead us to a series of comic examples whose func- tioning is at the core of this essay. In Seminar VI on Desire and its Interpretation, Lacan quotes Hamlet’s words and presents a perhaps surprisingly simple explanation: “I would ask you simply to replace the word king by the word phallus in order to see that it precisely is what is in question, namely that the body is engaged in this affair of the phallus, and how, but that on the contrary, the phallus, itself, is not engaged in anything, and that it always slips between your fingers” (Lacan 2002, p.

August, 2005 Re: The Evolution of The Pilates Method: The Fletcher Work™ To Whom It May Concern, The Fletcher Work is the authentic evolution of the Pilates’ method. To be accurate and legitimate, any journalistic inquiry into contemporary Pilates must necessarily include this dynamic contribution. On behalf of The Ron Fletcher Company, I encourage you to take time to review the enclosed materials. Pilates is more than a contemporary fitness phenomenon. It is an extraordinarily effective conditioning method — nearly a century in development — whose time has finally come. Joseph Pilates’ original principles were absolutely sound, yet his wife, Clara, referred to her husband’s original work as “just the tip of the iceberg.” The development and evolution of the Pilates method over the last 35 years has been, in large part, the result of the work and vision of Ron Fletcher, their protégé and student for nearly three decades. Since Joseph PIlates’ death in 1968, no other individual has played a more pivotal role in the evolution and popularity of the Pilates method. Now in his eighties, Mr. Fletcher is one of only three such masters still teaching the Work. Should you have any questions regarding the enclosed information, or should you wish to pursue a related project, please do not hesitate to contact me. In addition to being one of the great luminaries of the Pilates world, Ron Fletcher is also very much alive, well and active… and he’s a great interview. Sincerely, Kyria Sabin encl The Ron Fletcher Company™ . POB 64971 . Tucson, AZ 85728-4971 . 520.323.7070 .
