www.LUBlueTigers.com ● @GoBlueTigers ● 2012 Football WEEK ONE - Lindenwood 49, Lincoln 28 JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Khiry Draine caught five passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns, but Lindenwood took advantage of a dominant third quarter to hand the Lincoln football team a 49-28 loss on Saturday (Sept. 1). The game marked the season opener for both squads and the first game as a memberof the MIAA for Lindenwood, which is in its inaugural season in the league.

Lincoln’s running backs combined to gain 114 yards on the ground, and soph- omore quarterback Jacob Morris threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns. On a day filled with rain and muddy turf, however, the Lions ended up having more success battling the elements, outgaining the Blue Tigers in net ardage,y 500-226. That included a third quarter in which Lindenwood gained 118 yards and scored two touchdowns while stuffing Lincoln on each of its three posses- sions.

That proved to be the only quarter in which the Blue Tigers didn’t score, as LU scored once in both the first and fourth stanzas and twice in the second. Lincoln’s first points of the 2012 season came on its second drive of the game. A bad snap led to Lindenwood’s quarterback mishandling the ball, causing a fumble that Lincoln recovered on the Lindenwood 23-yard line. A personal foul call against the Lions moved the ball to the 11 and, five plays later, Morris scored on a quarterback keeper, giving Lincoln the early 7-0 lead.

The Lions didn’t take long to respond, scoring their first points of the game on the following drive. One big play made the difference, as Lindenwood scored on a 40-yard rush to even the score. It remained a 7-7 tie going into the second quarter, when the Lions returned a Lincoln punt to Blue Tiger 27-yard line. The Blue Tigers stuffed the Lions on first down and then forced otw incomple- tions on the ensuing plays. On fourth and 14, however, the Lions completed a 32-yard pass for a , giving Lindenwood its first lead of the afternoon.

Thanks to Draine’s big day, Lincoln didn’t need too long to respond. The Blue Tigers knotted the game back at 14-all on the ensuing possession, taking advantage of two Lindenwood penalties and two big plays. A pass interfer- ence call on the Lions gave Lincoln a first down on its own 29-yard line. Morris Henderson then gained 29 yards on two straight rushing plays, including a 26-yard carry that moved the Blue TIgers into Lindenwood territory. Draine, a junior making his LU debut, found the end zone following a substitution penalty on Lindenwood. Draine hauled in a 37-yard pass to tie the game.

Lindenwood took advantage of its opportunity to respond, however, convert- ing a third-and-17 for a 42-yard completion that eventually led to another score. Third down conversions proved to be one of the biggest differences in the game, as Lindenwood successfully converted 11 of 18 attempts while hold- ing the Blue Tigers five of their seven attempts. The Lions later pulled ahead by 14, scoring another touchdown on a drive that began on the 50-yard line.

The Blue Tigers were not ready to hand the game over to the Lions, however, and Lincoln proved its resilience on the following drive. Lincoln got the ball back with 46 seconds left in the half. After an 18-yard kickoff return by Henderson, Morris took his first snap of the drive and found Draine open along the sideline. Draine caught the ball, made the first two defenders miss, and then it was off to the races, as he eventually ran 77 yards to bring Lincoln within seven at 28-21.

The third quarter ended up changing the game, however, as Lindenwood took a 42-21 lead into the final stanza. An interception gave the Lions the ball with good field position at the Lincoln 32, and Lindenwood took advantage, scoring on an 11-yard reception for its final points of the game.

Lincoln eventually found its groove on offense again late in the fourth quarter, adding one last touchdown to give the Blue Tigers some momentum as the game ended. With 3:26 to play, Morris led the Blue Tigers on a nine-play drive that included yet another big catch by Draine. After a sack forced Lincoln into a third-and-long situation, Morris once again found Draine open in the center, and the pair connected on a 30-yard completion that put Lincoln in the red zone. Morris eventually capped off the drive with his second rushing score of the day, leaping over a pile of defenders on a one-yard . Lindenwood: 49 Henderson led the Blue Tiger rushing attack with 53 yards while Morris Lincoln: 28 gained 28. Martee Tenner had four carries for 14 yards while Donald Malone gained 19 yards on the ground. Sept. 1, 2012 Darryl Blackmon had a big day on defense, finishing with six solo tackles nda assisting on three others. He also had a sack and three tackles for loss. O’Hara Jefferson City, Mo. Fluellen made seven tackles, all solo, and also gave the Blue Tigers a boost as a kick returner, finishing with 99 yards on five returns. Reggie McMillan totaled seven tackles and three pass break-ups while also recording Lincoln’s lone Dwight T. Reed interception of the game. Chris Pace was in on six tackles, including one for a Stadium loss.

Lindenwood was led by quarterback Ben Gomez, who passed for 407 yards and five touchdowns. Lion running back Denodus O’Bryant gained 88 yards on 12 carries with a score. 10 www.LUBlueTigers.com ● @GoBlueTigers ● 2012 Football WEEK TWO - Truman 42, Lincoln 12 KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Truman State scored early and often, building too big of a lead for the Lincoln football team to overcome as the Blue Tigers fell to the Bulldogs, 42-12, on Saturday night (Sept. 8). It was the first road game and the first night game of the season for Lincoln.

The Bulldogs scored touchdowns on five of their first six possessions, taking a 35-0 lead early in the second quarter. Truman later added another score in the third quarter after taking a short field on a broken punt at- tempt.

Lincoln finally got on the scoreboard towards the end of the first half. With 2:56 remaining in the second quarter, Justin Ferguson intercepted a Bulldog pass, giving Lincoln the ball at its own 19-yard line. Quarterback Jacob Morris found Maurice Woodard for an 11 yard gain to get the drive rolling. On the next play, Andre Borney made a 50-yard reception to get Lincoln onto Truman’s side of the field, and then Morris found Quan Guion along the sideline for another first down.

A pass interference call in the end zone against the Bulldogs gave Lincoln the ball on the Truman five-yard line. Morris hit Borney again for a four- yard gain before keeping it himself for the one-yard score. The point-after attempt was blocked, however, and the Blue Tigers entered halftime trailing, 35-6.

The Blue Tigers struck again in the fourth quarter. As the third period came to a close, Truman lined up for a field goal attempt, only to have the kick blocked by Lincoln’s O’Hara Fluellen. The ball tipped through the air and landed back in Fluellen’s arms, and the senior ran it back to the Tru- man 48 to give LU its best starting field position of the night.

Lincoln’s running game went to work, with several big plays helping the Blue Tigers to move the ball down the field. Morris Henderson gained 17 yards on a third five, followed by rushes of six and 13 yards by Morris. LU capped off the drive with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Maurice Woodard. The Blue Tigers missed the extra point, making the score 42-12.

The Blue Tigers had their chances early. Late in the first quarter and head- ing into the second, Lincoln advanced 44 yards in five plays down to the Truman 31-yard line. On third down, Morris found DeVoyius Mark at the LU 45-yard line, and a penalty on Truman gave the Blue Tigers the ball in TSU territory. A nine-yard rush by Martee Tenner moved Lincoln down to the 31, but a fumble on the ensuing play ended the scoring opportunity.

LU had another long drive later in the second quarter. Morris completed a 22-yard pass to Khiry Draine and Henderson (10 yards) and Donald Malone (six yards) each ran for first downs, eventually advancing as far as the Truman 37-yard line. That’s where the drive stalled, however, as LU, faced with a fourth-and-10, was forced to punt.

Lincoln had one more good scoring chance in the fourth quarter after forcing Truman to punt the ball deep in its own territory. The Blue Tigers took over at the Bulldog 49, and the drive started well with a 22-yard run by Malone. That was as far as Lincoln would get, though, as the Bulldogs held on the next four plays to force a turnover on downs.

Truman improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA with the win while Lincoln fell to 0-2 on the season and in conference play. Truman out- gained Lincoln, 442-289. The Bulldogs held only a 269-207 advantage in passing yardage, but outrushed the Blue Tigers to the tune of 173-82. The turnovers were even, with both sides throwing an interception and losing a fumble. The Bulldogs also held a 32:55-27:05 edge in time of possession.

Morris completed 22 of 39 passes for 195 yards and the score. He also rushed for 32 yards. Henderson finished with a net total of 36 rushing Truman: 42 yards (7.2 yards per carry) while Malone had a net of 28 (5.6). Borney gained 81 yards on seven receptions while Woodard had 35 receiving Lincoln: 12 yards and Draine had 34. Sept. 8, 2012 Defensively, Khalif Stanten and James Jackson each had nine tackles, with Stanten recording 3.5 for a loss of 14 yards. Reggie McMillan had seven tackles, including six solo, while Ferguson and Josh Smith each had five Kirksville, Mo. solo tackles. Stokes The Bulldogs were led by Conrad Schottel, who passed for 215 yards and Stadium two touchdowns. Will Mosquera scored three rushing touchdowns while Garrett White had a team-high 95 rushing yards and a score of his own. Dallas Grier led the Bulldogs with 89 receiving yards while Paul Taylor caught two touchdown passes.

www.LUBlueTigers.com ● @GoBlueTigers ● 2012 Football 11 WEEK THREE - Missouri Southern 21, Lincoln 14 JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Lincoln football team forced five turnovers and blocked a field goal, but ended up on the wrong side of a defensive tussle as Mis- souri Southern handed the Blue Tigers a 21-14 loss on Saturday (Sept. 15).

The Blue Tiger defense went to work early, as Khalif Stanten picked off Missouri Southern quarterback Kellen Cox on the first play of the game. Stanten set up the Blue Tigers in good field position, returning the interception down to the MSSU 31.

Quarterback Jacob Morris started the LU offense with a keeper that gained eight yards, but the next two rushing attempts went for a total of just one yard. Lincoln decided to go for it on fourth down, and backup quarterback Lewis Larson, gained two yards on a carry to give the Blue Tigers the first down. On fourth and sixth, Morris fired a pass to Donald Malone, who was open in the end zone, but Malone dropped the ball before completing the catch and LU turned the ball over on downs.

Missouri Southern made the most of its defensive stop. After converting on a third and three, Cox took the ball on a keeper and found a gap through the defense, eventually racing 62 yards down the sideline to give MSSU an early 7-0 advantage. It was the start of a busy day for Cox, who gained a net total of 133 yards rushing while completing four of 10 passes for 52 yards.

Following another defensive stop by Missouri Southern, Lincoln punted the ball back to the MSSU 35. The Lions’ Marcus Hall tried to get away from the ball, but it bounced off his foot and he was unable to get on top of it. Lincoln’s Asim Manuel pounced on the football, putting the LU offense back on the field at the MSSU 33.

This time, Lincoln was able to capitalize on the good field position. Morris handed the ball to wide receiver Andre Borney, who turned and threw the ball down the field to Keenan Smith in the end zone. Smith made the reception, and in one play the score was tied at 7-7.

A 25-yard kick return gave the Lions the ball at their own 49, but Lincoln’s defense was stout once again. In four plays, Missouri Southern gained just eight yards, turning the ball over on downs. The Lincoln offense stalled on its next pos- session, and LU once again was forced to punt. MSSU’s Elijah Swen fumbled on his return, though, and Manuel grabbed the ball for his second fumble recovery of the first quarter.

Lincoln’s next drive started well, with Morris completing a seven-yard pass to Morris Henderson, giving LU the ball at the MSSU 22. The next two plays went for a total loss of four yards, however, and Morris’ fourth-down pass to Khiry Draine fell incomplete.

Once again, though, the Lincoln defense was up to the challenge. After giving up an 11-yard run on the first play of MSSU’s possession, Stanten and Aaron Johnson tackled Ne’Ront Threatt for a one-yard loss. Cox then dropped back to try his second pass attempt of the day, and LU’s Johnny Beautelus got in front of it, made the interception, and ran the ball back to the MSSU 28. A holding call on the return against the Lions moved the ball to the MSSU 18, but Lincoln could only gain six yards. A field goal attempt went wide right, and the first quarter came to a close with a 7-7 tie on the scoreboard.

After stopping the Lions on their next drive, Lincoln started its first possession of the second quarter at its own 36. On third down, however, Morris fumbled on a keeper up the middle, and MSSU’s Alex Wong made the recovery. The Lions took advantage of the short field, with Cox converting a 23-yard pass on third down before rushing 11 yards for his second score of the day. Missouri Southern later forced a punt, and then drove down the field, capping its drive with quarterback sneak by Cox to go up 21-7. Lincoln got the ball back with 24 seconds left in the half, but as it turned out, the Blue Tigers only needed 17. Larson found Devoyius Mark for a 17-yard gain down to midfield. After spiking the ball, Larson again found Mark down the sideline. Mark made the reception and then outran the Lion defense, scoring the Blue Tigers’ second touchdown of the day with seven second left on the clock. A squib clock allowed Lincoln to run out the clock, and the Blue Tigers entered halftime down 21-14.

With 9:31 remaining in the game, Missouri Southern took the field on its 25-yard line, intending to put together a long drive to run out the clock. The Lions nearly succeeded, picking up five first downs. At one point, Lincoln’s Herman Hopson forced a fumble, but a lucky bounce allowed Missouri Southern to retain posses- sion as the Lions put together their best drive of the second half.

The Lions reached the Lincoln 11-yard line. Dallas Herndon attempted a 38-yard Missouri Southern: 21 kick, but a gaggle of Blue Tigers got their hands up, deflecting the kick into the air. Fluellen recovered the ball at Lincoln’s 34-yard line, but was unable to run it Lincoln: 14 down the field, giving LU one last possession with 26 ticks left on the clock.

Following an incompletion, Larson connected with Borney for a 28-yard gain to Sept. 15, 2012 the Missouri Southern 38. Larson spiked the ball on first down, and threw the ball away on second down after finding nobody open down the field. On third down, Larson completed a 10-yard pass to Quan Guion, who got out of bounds with Jefferson City, Mo. three seconds remaining. That left Lincoln with one final play. Larson scrambled around, trying to find an open receiver in the end zone, but Missouri Southern got to him, ending the game on a seven-yard sack. Dwight T. Reed Stadium Larson finished his day 15-of-28 for 192 yards and the score. Mark finished with 80 receiving yards on three receptions while Borney caught three passes for 41 yards. Lincoln had more luck in the air than on the ground, as Malone was LU’s leading rusher with 10 net yards. On the day, Missouri Southern outgained Lincoln, 319-40, in total rushing yards, but the Blue Tigers finished with a 240-52 edge in passing yards. 12 www.LUBlueTigers.com ● @GoBlueTigers ● 2012 Football WEEK FOUR - Pittsburg State 59, Lincoln 17 PITTSBURG, Kan. – Maurice Woodard led the Lincoln football team with 151 receiving yards and Khalif Stanten tallied nine tackles, but Pittsburg State built an early en route to a 59-17 victory over the Blue Tigers on Saturday night (Sept. 22).

Pittsburg State, which entered the game ranked No. 1 in the country in the most recent Division II Coaches Poll, scored on its first six drives of the game. The Gorillas also added a punt return for a score and recovered a Lincoln fumble in the end zone, taking a 56-3 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the first half.

Woodard’s 151 yards came on just three receptions, including catch - ing a 64-yard pass from Jacob Morris for Lincoln’s first touchdown of the night. That score came late in the second quarter, culminating a three-play drive that featured two long completions by Morris. The first was an 12-yard catch by Devoyius Mark. Following a rush by Donald Malone, Morris found an open Woodard to get Lincoln into the end zone for the first time all night.

On the Gorilla’s ensuing drive, Cecil Frison forced a fumble on PSU’s Darrack Harger, giving Lincoln back the football at its own 39 with 1:34 remaining in the half. With some momentum going the Blue Tigers’ way, Morris completed a nine-yard pass to Andre Borney and a 28-yard pass to Woodard. Lincoln, also benefiting from two penalties against Pittsburg State, advanced down to the Gorillas’ two-yard line, but PSU’s Terry Keeston intercepted Morris in the end zone, keeping the score at 56-10 entering halftime.

The Lincoln defense held tough in the second half, giving up just a field goal in the remaining 30 minutes. On Pittsburg State’s second drive of the third quarter, Frison forced his second fumble of the night, with Timmy Dunn falling on the ball at the PSU 23-yard line to set up the Lincoln offense in great field position.

Morris went back to work, with two 11-yard rushes and another that went for three yards. Brent Ryan culminated the drive with a one-yard into the end zone, giving Lincoln its final points of the night.

The Blue Tigers initially got on the scoreboard on their second drive of the game. Quarterback Lewis Larson completed a 59-yard pass to Woodard to set Lincoln up at the PSU 14. Malone rushed for a com - bined six yards on first and second down carries, but Larson was sacked on third down, leading to a field goal try. Michael Ashley converted the attempt to cut Pittsburg State’s lead to 7-3.

Larson completed eight of 15 passes for 86 yards while Morris was 6-18 for 119 yards and a touchdown. Morris was also Lincoln’s lead- ing rusher, compiling a net total of 73 yards on the ground. Morris Henderson gained 31 yards on six carries.

Defensively, Stanten led Lincoln with five solo tackles and also had 1.5 tackles for loss. Frison and Ellington Wade each had two tackles for loss while O’Hara Fluellen, Maurkice Savage and Justin Fergu- Pittsburg State: 59 son each had six tackles. Justin Gaston broke up a pass. Lincoln: 17 Pittsburg State was led by Anthony Abenoja, who had 116 passing yards, and Briceton Wilson, who gained 69 yards on seven carries. Sept. 22, 2012 Gus Toca led the Gorillas with three sacks and a forced fumble while Tyler Disney had a team-high seven solo tackles, 11 overall, Pittsburg, Kan. and a forced fumble. Carnie Smith With the win, Pittsburg State remained unbeaten, improving to 4-0 Stadium overall and in the MIAA. Lincoln drops to 0-4 on the season and 0-4 in the league with the loss.

www.LUBlueTigers.com ● @GoBlueTigers ● 2012 Football 13 WEEK FIVE - Emporia State 37, Lincoln 26 EMPORIA, Kan. – Quarterback Lewis Larson connected with Maurice Woodard for a pair of touchdowns and Morris Henderson ran in two more scores, but the Lincoln football team fell at Emporia State, 37-26, on Saturday (Sept. 29). The Blue Tigers gave up just two touchdowns against the Hornets, but Emporia State broke an MIAA record by making seven field goals to secure the win.

Trailing 37-13, Lincoln mounted a late fourth quarter comeback, scoring two touchdowns in the span of 1:14. On third and five from the Lincoln 47, Larson threw a 30-yard dart to Woodard, who outran the ESU defensive backfield for a 53-yard touchdown reception.

An illegal block penalty on the ensuing kick return pinned Emporia State deep on its own side of the field, and the LU defense forced a three-and- out to get the ball back. An 18-yard reception by Woodard and an 11-yard designed keeper by Larson set up Henderson for a five-yard touchdown run, his second score of the afternoon.

The extra point was no good, leaving LU in an 11-point deficit. Following an- other three-and-out by the Lincoln defense, the Blue Tigers got the ball back with 59 seconds remaining in the game. The offense was unable to move the ball past the Emporia State 48, however, resulting in the final score of 37-26.

Emporia State built its lead largely on a strong 17-point first quarter, in which the Hornets scored on one-yard and 16-yard rushes by Derwin Hall and a field goal by Derek Jonas. It was the first of two field goals by Jonas. Eli Kuhns later made four field goals and Zane Guadagnolo made another, giving ESU seven field goals in total. That broke the MIAA record of six in a game previously set by Central Missouri against Southeast Missouri State on Nov. 2, 1985.

The Blue Tigers got on the scoreboard in the second quarter thanks in part to a special teams miscue by Emporia State. After the LU defense forced a three and out deep in ESU territory, Emporia State’s punter, Jonas, shanked a kick out of his own end zone. The 15-yard punt gave Lincoln great field position, with the Blue Tigers taking over on the ESU 20 yard line. Two plays later, Larson found Woodard down the middle for an 18-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was blocked, making the score 20-6.

ESU responded to the Lincoln score with a long kickoff return, leading to the first of Kuhns’ field goals. The Blue Tigers were forced to punt out of their own end zone on the next drive, and the Hornets blocked the kick for a safety. That gave ESU the ball back, and the Hornets drove for another Kuhns field goal to enter halftime with a 28-6 lead.

The second half began well for the Blue Tigers. Lincoln received the ball and took over on its own 12 yard line, but on the first play of the half Donald Malone found an opening and raced for 33 yards. Two plays later Malone moved Lincoln into ESU territory with a 14-yard run. The Hornet defense held tough after that, however, and Lincoln only gained one more yard before being forced to punt.

Emporia State drove down and kicked its fifth field goal of the game. On the ensuing kickoff, O’Hara Fluellen caught the ball, found a crease and started a footrace down the sideline, eventually stepping out on the ESU five-yard line. Two plays later, Henderson plowed through a group of defenders into the endzone, cutting the Hornet lead to 31-13.

Larson finished his day with 157 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also gained 43 yards rushing on 11 carries. Malone was the game’s leading rusher, gaining 83 net yards on eight carries, while Henderson had 25 yards and two scores on eight touches.

Woodard secured his second-straight 100-yard receiving day, finishing the game with six receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Last week, Woodard caught three passes for 151 yards and a score in a loss at Pittsburg State. Fluellen also had 108 yards on two kick returns, while Byron Williams added 79 more yards on six kick returns. Emporia State: 37

Defensively, Fluellen led Lincoln with 13 tackles, including 12 unassisted, Lincoln: 26 and added three pass break-ups. Johnny Beautelus added 10 tackles, includ- ing eight solo and two for loss. Khalif Stanten and James Jackson each added Sept. 29, 2012 sacks while Lincoln as a team finished with nine tackles for a combined loss of 21 yards. Jon Manning helped the field position cause with seven punts for 211 yards, an average of 30.1 yards per kick, including a long of 43. On Emporia, Kan. three of those punts, Manning pinned the Hornets inside their own 20. Welch The Hornets outgained the Blue Tigers in total yardage, 419-339, and won the time of possession battle by holding the ball for 33:33 compared to 26:27 Stadium for Lincoln. The Hornets passed for 239 yards compared to 166 for Lincoln, but the rushing totals were much closer, with ESU holding a slight 180-173 edge. Lincoln entered the game with the second-best turnover margin in the league, but lost that battle on Saturday, yielding two interceptions while the Hornets were turnover-free. 14 www.LUBlueTigers.com ● @GoBlueTigers ● 2012 Football Scoring Summary (Final) #20 Washburn vs Lincoln (Oct 06, 2012 at Jefferson City, Mo.)
