GUIDE TO LEINSTER v Saturday 29th August 2020 OFFICIAL LEINSTER SUPPORTERS CLUB

LEINSTER v ULSTER

WHAT A RETURN! And just like that and before we knew it, Round 14 has come and gone in the near blink of the eye. After waiting so long for the return of the game we love so well, you’d be forgiven for forgetting just how quick 80mins can go in a game and when you throw in the shear ferocity with which all games were attacked by GETTING TO AIRPORT the respective players, it really was a case of “Wow – did I just miss something?!”

A thrilling 27-25 victory over Munster ensured we extended our record in this season’s competition to 14/14 in a game that went down to the wire. At one stage in the game Munster were 24-13 down but fought back to come within a single score at the end and had the ball with a minute to go and pressing hard. The end result though was no penalties were conceded and it was who (ironically in a move similar to Peter O’Mahony against the All Blacks) stooped low and picked off a flat pass to snatch the ball away from another Munster attack. Who knew someone that tall to get down to that level but what a fantastic piece of play and it really summed up Leinster’s tenacity and mind-set from the opening whistle.

The return of Round 14 was a success in the eyes of Leinster and the focus now shifts to this weekend and Ulster in the final round of the ‘regular’ (yeah weird saying that) season before the top two in each conference contest the Semi-Final and then onwards to the Grand Final. In the second of the weekend fixtures to be held in Irish Rugby HQ on Sunday, it was 2015/16 league champions who defeated 2005/06 champions Ulster, on a score-line of 26-20 in what was another rip roaring start to finish, end-to-end encounter. Tries from John Porch, Kieran Marmion, Bundee Aki (on his 100th appearance) as well as ex-Leinster tight- head Jack Aungier ensured that Connacht were ultimately too strong on what was their 1st appearance to Irish Rugby HQ since 1989. #Lineout4Leinster OFFICIAL LEINSTER SUPPORTERS CLUB

AS IT STANDS …. So with those results, Conference A is already decided and it’s just a case of either finishing what you started and going for the grand slam of results, or looking to end the season on a high if the result last weekend wasn’t what you desired. Leinster & Ulster are Semi-Final bound after Glasgow lost to Edinburgh last Saturday to end their slim SF prospects.

Leinster as we know though will be looking to continue their winning ways and finish the round fixtures with a 100% record, while Ulster will be looking to try avoid a potential rugby return whitewash of two defeats before moving onto the semi- finals. The sides last met back in the RDS on Friday 20th December where after 14 tries (8 vs 6) and 96pts in total, Leinster took the victory 54-42.

(The total of 14 tries equals the PRO14 record for tries scored in a single match (Edinburgh v Caerphilly September 2002 (66-32)), 96pts is the Championships second biggest ever total while Ulster’s score of 42 is a PRO14 record for a losing team)

AS IT STANDS CONTD …. Over in Conference B it’s Edinburgh who currently lead Munster by 5 points as they head into their Friday night fixture in a rematch against Glasgow. Second placed Munster currently have a four-point lead over Scarlets in third but either of these sides could still clinch that second spot and put themselves into the semi-final against Leinster.

Should Munster defeat Connacht with a bonus point, and Edinburgh slip up against Glasgow, then even with the two sides finishing level on points (assuming Edinburgh get nothing), it would be the Scots to claim first place as they currently have 11 wins to Munster’s 9.

If Scarlets win away to the on Saturday with a bonus point, then this would put them 1 point ahead of Munster who would then need at least two points in their fixture against Connacht to ensure 2nd place is theirs. Should the two teams (Munster & Scarlets) finish level on points, then with both teams cur- rently sitting on 9 victories each, a win for the Scarlets (& defeat for Munster) would put the Welsh ahead in terms of overall victories so they would progress.

As with everything on the final day, it’s simply a case of win your game at all costs and don’t look to the other teams for assistance or favours.

LEINSTER v ULSTER

LEINSTER V ULSTER (A HISTORY) While Leinster v Munster is one of the biggest provincial rivalries in the world, Leinster v Ulster actually pre- dates the above with the first game taking place in 1875 (a full 4yrs before Lei v Mun).

Since the beginning of the Interprovincial Championship in 1946, these two sides have faced off 99 times with Leinster securing 59 victories to Ulster’s 34 and 6 draws.

The game back in December in the RDS was, as we mentioned the second highest scoring game ever in this competition, but both sides are no strangers to securing big league wins over each other;

LEINSTER ULSTER DIFF DATE 40 7 33 05/01/2019 38 7 31 2017/18 39 9 30 1980/81 6 30 24 2015/16 6 28 22 2003/04 14 34 10 1998/99

The sides have also met in the Heineken Cup and the most memorable occasion was the 2011/12 Final in Twickenham London. On that day, Saturday 19th May 2012, in front of a crowd of a mere 81,774, we secured our second European star on a score-line of 42-14.
