2016 ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY TRACK & FIELD Coach Senon ‘Baldy’ Castillo On January 31, 2009, legendary Sun Devil Track & Field Coach Senon ‘Baldy’ Castillo passed away, just 12 days after celebrating his 90th birthday. The leader of the ASU program for 29 years (1954-82), Castillo built his program around talented sprinters and outstanding field events that produced 10 NCAA individual champions and 34 All-Americans before advancing 24 to the Olympic Games where they won 13 medals, eight of which were gold. During his days with the Sun Devils, many highlights were recorded. In 1963, his 4x400m relay team of Mike Barrick, Henry Carr, Ron Freeman and Ulis Williams combined to run 3:04.5, which, at the time, was a world record. In 1977, he took 11 athletes to the prestigious Penn Relays with all 11 of those athletes returning to the Valley of the Sun with a first-place watch as ASU swept all three sprint relays and captured seven individual titles. Later that sea- son, however, the Sun Devils traveled to Champaign, Ill., for the NCAA Championships and returned home as the top team in the nation. That team title was the only one for the men for 31 years until the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships were won by ASU. A true legend of the sport, Baldy will sorely be missed by not only the sport, but also by his Sun Devil athletic family.

Director of track and field greg kraft
The 2015-16 season will mark the 20th year that Greg Kraft has served as the Director of track & field/cross country at Arizona State University, becoming the second-longest tenured head coach currently in athletics. Kraft, a four-time USTFCCCA National Coach of the Year and a three-time Pac-12 Conference Coach of the Year, has become a highly decorated coach that continually works with some of the most decorated student-athletes in Sun Devil history. Highlights of Kraft’s career include the sweep of the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Indoor Championship in 2008, a feat at the time that had only been accomplished by one other program and coach in NCAA history. Prior to 2008, other highlights include the 2007 women’s team that went undefeated, sweeping the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, as well as Mt. Pacific and Pac-10 Conference titles. Individually, Kraft’s personal highlights include former Sun Devil Dwight Phillips winning long jump Gold at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Dwight, who additionally won four IAAF World Outdoor titles, made his first Olympic team following his senior year in 2000. Other highlights include Yuma’s Jacquelyn Johnson who became only the fourth female in NCAA history to become a 4-time National Champion in the same event. Jacquelyn, like Dwight, would culminate her senior season with an Olympic berth at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. He also coached former Sun Devil Bryan McBride to a high jump NCAA Championship in the 2013-14 season. Coach Kraft came to Tempe in the fall of 1996 after a very successful career at the University of South Carolina. The 1996 Southeast- ern Conference Coach of the Year is now the second longest tenured coach in ASU track & field history, trailing only legendary coach Baldy Castillo’s 26 years. Kraft’s goal upon his arrival to Tempe was to build a program that was athletically balanced throughout the three seasons of cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field. Kraft’s ambition was also to have a track & field program that had a balanced team approach involving the four disciplines of sprints/relays, jumps, throws and middle-distance/distance runners. Mission accomplished.
Highlighting Kraft • In his 19 years at ASU, his teams have won 4 NCAA Team Championships & 32 NCAA individual titles • His teams have won 12 NCAA Top 4 team trophies since 2005 • His teams have finished in the Top 10 at the NCAA Championship 23 times • The Sun Devils have produced 13 Olympians during Kraft’s tenure • Academically, the USTFCCCA has recognized ASU six times as the nation’s #1 Academic Team • Academically, the USTFCCCA has selected a Sun Devil seven times as their National Scholar Athlete of the Year
