PEAC’s Unique Program

By combining the focus on academics and sport, the faculty at PEAC has created specialized programs that are designed to fit every individual student’s needs with the of producing first-class academic athletes. Our professional faculty is comprised of Ontario Certified Teachers, fitness specialists, sport trainers and top level coaches who have designed tailored programs for student-athletes. PEAC develops personal player profiles for all students. We work with each athlete to build a profile that is then made available to coaches and recruiters from universities and colleg- es throughout North America, such as Harvard University, Cornell University, Boston Universi- ty, Brown University, University of Maine, as well as many others. PEAC conducts informational trips to Canadian and US universities to showcase our ath- letes, meet coaches and academic advisors which allows our students the chance to sub- mit their “athletic résumé” directly to the decision-makers when it comes to athletic scholarships. PEAC is one of the only Canadian schools to emphasize the “MARKETING” of players to the right people as a means to help our athletes achieve their athletic goals. PEAC is also connected to a huge network of player agents, scouts and elite teams to give our student-athletes the leading edge in getting to the next level.

Player Placement Program PEAC has several connections within the sports world that we leverage depending on whichever sports our athletes choose to compete in. We help place them on the appropri- ate club team or have them play for our own showcase teams so they can get the best exposure for athletic scholarships.

PEAC Academics

Accredited by the Ontario Ministry of Education, PEAC provides an engaging, supportive and flexible academic environment with small class sizes, online learning facilities and an available residence for boarding.

At PEAC we recognize the need to challenge our students to identify, work through their weaknesses and push them in order achieve a high level of academic success. For some, this means receiving more in-depth work as part of a particular course or subject while for others, this means receiving extra support and direct instruction from specific teachers. Our goal is to create a challenging and comfortable learning environment that accommodates all of our students’ needs.

Every PEAC student has access to: Teacher-directed tutorials, PEAC Online, assistive technology, remedial support, enrichment assignments, SAT preparation courses, and flexible deadlines. Students who have individual learning needs or exceptional cases will have support in the classroom that will address not only their accommodations and modifications but will also provide the tools necessary for success. From technological to remedial support, all stu- dents will be given an equal opportunity to achieve success. Whether coming to PEAC School with an I.E.P., or having a program developed while attending PEAC, our staff will ensure that parents and students have a voice when it comes to the implementation strategies used for the program of each individual student. Every PEAC classroom is equipped with state-of-the-art educational tools; the purpose of which is to aid in the development of our students.

—Page 6—

Instruction is delivered daily following the current Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines. Three modes of learning are available in accordance with each student’s individual needs: standard class rooms, individual instruction, and highly developed online sessions. PEAC’s pupil/teacher ratio is, on average, no more than 15 students per teacher. Our limited class sizes allows students who are looking for extra help, or more one-on-one time with their teachers.

I have two boys who have been at PEAC since the start of this year. My one son is in the sixth grade, and my other in grade eight. It is now four months into the school year and we all could not be happier. PEAC has been extremely beneficial in terms of developing their hockey acumen. The boys love the coaches and instructors, and are eager to participate and learn, and have developed some great friendships within this wonderful environment. Academically, I could not be more pleased with their progress. The structure of the school, and the accountability instilled in the students, my boys are

learning valuable life lessons which I know will serve them well into their lives

Support Personnel PEAC has a number of support personnel availa- ble in school to address needs that may arise. These staff members work alongside classroom teachers and administration staff to meet the needs of our students. Nutritional programs, counseling, organizational support, liaising between coaches and teachers, guidance, fa- cilitators for scheduling and transportation issues, and sports therapists are all available for our student-athletes. Providing support in a variety of areas ensures that PEAC accomplishes its goals in ensuring student-athletes are provided with support beyond the classroom.

—Page 7—

Professional Staff Although it is not mandatory for private schools to have certified teachers, our students de- serve the absolute best. PEAC’s teaching staff consists of certified teachers who are in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers. PEAC teachers also teach within their subject areas, which means each teacher can go beyond the curriculum to illustrate lessons in far greater depth than the textbook provides. Our staff is committed to providing our student athletes with a variety of extracurricular opportunities in the arts, athletics, academic enrichment and community-building initiatives.

What a difference a year has made. My daughter joined PEAC in grade 10/11with big dreams for university and for her swimming future. At PEAC, she has found an emphasis on academics that encourages her to not only to do the work required, but to understand, to think outside the box, and to challenge herself. In her sport, she has found an environment that encourages competition, belief in herself, trust in her abilities, and faith in taking risks while in the water in order to get the results she wants. In the

short year that she has been there, I have seen remarkable changes, in particular, in her drive to compete at her best. It’s hard to explain, really, how much she has gained by being at PEAC. She stands taller. She speaks with more confidence. She challenges herself and others. She knows how to compete to succeed. We are very pleased to have found PEAC and couldn’t imagine a different place to be.

School Tutorials Student-athletes are typically driven individuals and are often very good at juggling many different responsibilities and schedules at once. School can either be a burden or a positive experience that requires some managing. At PEAC students are not only offered support online, by phone and through email, but teachers have also set aside a tutorial time before and after school for PEAC students to receive help with their work, deadlines, or to re schedule quizzes/tests/exams. PEAC tutorials start the third or fourth week of school to allow for registration to be finalized and classes to settle in. Tutorials are booked by the teacher, the student, or the parents and can be booked, in most cases, the same day as the appointment.

Homework At PEAC, student-athletes receive help with homework during built-in tutorial sessions at the end of each school day. This is done so that our student-athletes may work while at school and focus on sport, rest and minimizing stress when they go home. Those who are involved in athletic activities after school or who may miss school can keep up with their school work through the e-learning modules that are posted for each of their classes. In addition, students may schedule consultations with individual teachers to review homework and assignments. Finally, all assigned homework is an important part of the learning process. Although homework is not allowed to be evaluated, it is a tool used by teachers to gauge a student’s progress. All homework is mandatory and must be completed even if a later date for completion has been negotiated.

Before/After School Tutorials Students requiring individual assistance may be asked to attend one of our tutorials before or after school.

—Page 9—

Examinations All students from Grades 9 to 12 participate in two examination periods. Students receive an exam timetable approximately two weeks before the exam period and exam outlines approximately one week before exams. Tutorial times may be extended for this period to ensure all students are prepared for their exams.

Elementary School Schedule Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 are taught the full Elementary Ontario Curriculum. Math, Science, Language and Physical Education are part of the daily student schedule, as are the Social Sciences and Arts. Support is available to all students throughout the day.

High School Schedule PEAC’s high school program offers students an enriched academic experience. All courses are offered at the Academic/University level. Students have a hybrid of both semester and non-semester based systems. In grades 9 and 10, courses such as Mathematics, Science and Physical Education are offered all year long. Most importantly, the PEAC school system allows student athletes the opportunity to stay caught up in their most challenging courses even if they are away for training or competition.

The same times on Mondays and Wednesdays are reserved for girls. Depending on each case, students can also use these times for work recovery, enrichment, or remediation with respect to their academics

PEAC Online For simple daily communication, PEAC’s on-line website (online.peac.ca) allows for parents to login and post questions directly to teachers. Questions will likely be answered within the day, depending on the teacher’s schedule. Furthermore, all staff emails are also available on-line as an alternate method for communication. Keeping track of what is happening at the school and in the students’ courses is made easy.

Guidance and Post-Secondary Applications PEAC has a full-time guidance staff, who works with all of our students to discuss their future planning from course counseling to University Admissions. This also includes registering our students at the NCAA’s “Eligibility Centre”. Our guidance counseling emphasizes community involvement and volunteering initiatives, which students must participate in, in order to graduate and apply for certain undergraduate and post-graduate courses. We prepare our students to enter university with all of the necessary tools to be successful as learners and maintain their academic standing throughout their post secondary career.

PEAC Athletics

PEAC provides sport-specific training to all its student-athletes consisting of conditioning, strength training, and fitness testing geared for their individual sport.

PEAC Sports include: girls’ and boys’ hockey, girls’ and boys’ soccer, skiing, swimming, gymnastics, squash, tennis, baseball, lacrosse, squash, equestrian riding and more. PEAC provides male and female athletes with individual coaching and skill development for their specific sport of choice. In order to ensure that all student-athletes are working at their optimal level, students are regularly tested on their own personal level of physical fitness.

PEAC’s athletic development programs are divided into two categories:

Elite Development Program - Students must be able to meet academic requirements AND perform at top-level status. This program applies to Hockey, Skiing/snowboarding, Baseball, Soccer, Tennis, Squash, Gymnastics, Figure Skating, Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts.

Flex Program – Students must meet academic requirements and be performing at regional, provincial, or national levels in their specific sport. Students receive sport-specific dry-land training and personalized training schedules to suit the needs of their competition schedules.

—Page 12—

PEAC Residence

PEAC has one residence for out- of-town and international students that attend our school. It is located less than 10 minutes away from the school at 105 Home Road. Here the residents may live in a shared room with one other or in a room by them- selves (for an additional fee). All meals are prepared for them and the cleaning staff vacuum and clean the bathrooms 3 times weekly. The residence provides the students with access to wireless internet, kitch- ens, bathrooms, showers, study room and a laundry. Each room has a bed, and closet space. A student who lives in a PEAC residence will attend classes five days per week. They take part in the sport specific practices and dry-land sessions-training four days per week, plus team practices where applicable, up to 3 days a week, plus games. This could amount to over 7 practices and 2 games a week. Students living in the residence have the same responsibilities as all PEAC students. All students are responsible for getting themselves to classes/training on time and being prepared for the day. Boarding students may

Weekly Schedules and Weekends Boarders have a consistent daily and weekly schedule. PEAC student-athletes are in classes five days of the week, and have athletic training four days of the week. On the weekends, boarders will have many opportunities to relax, in addition to having time to catch up on school work and be involved in their sport. Boarders will also have many opportunities to attend organized outings off campus with their peers and PEAC staff to visit some of the wonderful sites that has to offer. Some of these trips may include: The Art Gallery of Ontario, The Royal Ontario Museum, The Hockey Hall of Fame, The C.N Tower, The Harbourfront Centre, Centre Island and many other destinations.

PEAC Student Accomplishments

 Connor McDavid (pictured right) was selected as the first overall Entry Draft pick for the OHL in 2012. McDavid currently plays for the Erie Otters and is the early choice to go first overall in the 2015 NHL draft.

 Simone Cselpo is ranked as a Top Age Group swimmer in Canada in five events including the 800-metre freestyle.

 Joshua Ho-Sang, 15, is among the most talked-about teenaged players in hockey. A quick-skating, soft-handed centre man for the ’ AAA minor midgets, he is expected to be among the top picks in next spring’s Ontario Hockey League draft. Doug Gilmour, the Maple Leafs great who doubles as general manager of the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs, calls Joshua “the elite of the elite” at his age level. Joshua attended PEAC since Grade 8.

PEAC was an integral part of my university acceptance success. I applied to schools such as U of T, York, McMaster, Guelph, Ryerson, and Queens, all for a Bachelor of Commerce degree. As a result of PEAC’s excellent guidance, amazing staff, and my determination, I was accepted into every program I applied to. In the end, I chose the prestigious Queens Commerce program, where I am now finding myself well prepared, as well as educated, above and beyond the program standard. While others find themselves scrambling and anxious, I am relying on the values and academic qualities that PEAC introduced and instilled in me, making coping with the University transition quite simple. While at PEAC, I was trained by some of the top athletic coaches. I was taught about proper lifting techniques, nutrition, and training philosophy. The results speak for themselves. I gained a great deal of strength and size (actually 50lbs of muscle from grade 10 to grade 12). While at Queens, I found myself using the strength I had gained to successfully make the Varsity “Acrobatic” Cheerleading Team. As a rookie, with no prior experience, and over 100 people trying out for only 10 spots, I needed to have the competitive athletic advantage. Without PEAC, I could not have made it to this stage. PEAC School for Elite Athletes is my HOME and always will be.

PEAC’s Success Center Program

The Success Center

The PEAC Success Center is staffed and managed by our Special Education resource teacher and staffed by our Educational Assistants. Our staff is employed full time and is available throughout the entire day for students who are enrolled in the Success Center.

In collaboration with the classroom teachers, the Success Center offers an alternative work location, and at times, in class support. The Special Education resource teacher will work in conjunction with the Educational Assistants and classroom teachers towards developing resources, strategies, and accommodations that will better serve the individual student.

Students with an IEP (Individualized Education Plan), IAP (Individual Action Plan), or who are identified by administration as at risk academically, will be recommended for this pro- gram. At the end of each semester, a student’s level of participation will be evaluated by the resource teacher and administration to determine the level of support that student needs going forward or if continued enrollment in the Success Center is necessary.

Success Center Staff

Each student with an IEP is assigned an Educational Assistant by the resource teacher. The Educational Assistant is responsible for being an in-school advocate and resource to the individual, his/her parents/guardians, and classroom teachers. Educational Assistants in conjunction with the resource teacher, monitor student’s success and provide support to allow students to succeed within the regular classroom. Parents/Guardians will be consist- ently communicated with by the resource teacher and/or Educational Assistants to discuss concerns as students make adjustments to the expectations of the curricular expectations in the courses.

Success Center Enrollment Process

Administration, the resource teacher, and director are all responsible for making decisions regarding who will be admitted into the Success Center. The criteria for admission into the Center is as follows:

1. Students who have identified learning accommodations in the form of an Individual Education Plan or Individual Action Plan where there are specific accommodation and modifications that involve more care and attention by the classroom teacher. 2. Where there are previous performance indicators such including low grades, learning skills reports indicating “Needs Improvement” or “Satisfactory” on the student’s report card, behavior issues in the classroom, or any other social/emotional factors that would be obvious indicators for intervention and assistance throughout the day. 3. Where a student is consistently unable to be successful in the classroom due to poor time management or organizational skills, easily distracted, or lack of preparation and/or completion of assignments, tests and quizzes.
