In turn, the healed man's clinging to Peter and John emboldened them to speak boldly to a crowd of surprised, suspicious and opposing people. Peter and John along with the healed man stood united as a witness in two ways. Before the adoring and amazed crowd Peter and John did not try to garner glory or to focus attention on themselves as powerful people. Instead, they stood united for the glorification of Jesus. They did not want to be the centre of attraction. At times, unity efforts can also aim at conglomeration for power. It can bring more power to the church leaders, prestige and privileges from the secular and political forces on the basis of the combined strength of the united churches! The apostles preached to glorify God rather than themselves. To the threatening and intimidating opposition, 'the uneducated and ordinary' (Acts 4:13) Peter and John stood their ground countering the coercion with their conviction that they would listen to God and speak rather than being silenced by the opposition. They may have been a minority but their witness was mighty! The boldness of the grassroots ('uneducated and ordinary') level believers will be the touchstone of the united witness for the glory of God. The boldness of the vulnerable minority is our call too! This is the last scene in the Bible we see Peter and John together. They fade from the biblical pages as united and uniting witnesses inviting us to join them in our times.
