Permanent ponds, temporary pools, flowing waters, and artificial pools were sampled. Most of the species are new records for the island and twenty- nine are new to the Balearic Isles. The families Brachionidae and Lecanidae provide half of the taxa. Keratella procurva (Thorpe, 1912), which is considered a subtropical species, occurred with a widespread distnbution in the island. Different taxa and «Formenkreis» found are mentioned. Original drawings and scanning photomicrographs of some species are presented. Of the 57 species found, four were members of the genus Keratella, A literature search revealed about 15 species and subspecies of Kerøtella recorded from the Neotropics, 1 1 of these frorn Brazil. All known Neotropical Keratella rotifers are discussed and figured, with highlights on the endemics. Related species are discussed when confnsion may arise with identifications. Taxonomic details of specific significance are listed in order of importance, and the state ofexpert consensus about this genus is given. Ecology and distribution of these rotifers are also discussed. Key words : Rotifers, Keratella, distribution, Neotropics, South America. Resumo Oito lagos brasileiros pesquisados por F. A. Esteves e M. S. R. Ibañez foram examinados a fim de determinar as espécies de Rotifera presentes nos mesmos. Entre as 57 espécies distintas que foram constatadas nos lagos, 4 foram membros do gênero Kerat:ella. Pesquisa na lite¡atura científica revelou registros de cerca de 15 espécies e subespócies de Keratella nas regiões neotropicais, sendo 10 espécies registradas no Brasil. Fornecem-se figuras de todas as espécies de Keratellø atualmente registradas nas regiões neo- tropicais, com ênfase ãs espécies endêmicas. Towards a Management Hierarchy (Classification) for the Catalogue of Life
TOWARDS A MANAGEMENT HIERARCHY (CLASSIFICATION) FOR THE CATALOGUE OF LIFE Draft Discussion Document Rationale The Catalogue of Life partnership, comprising Species 2000 and ITIS (Integrated Taxonomic Information System), has the goal of achieving a comprehensive catalogue of all known species on Earth by the year 2011. The actual number of described species (after correction for synonyms) is not presently known but estimates suggest about 1.8 million species. The collaborative teams behind the Catalogue of Life need an agreed standard classification for these 1.8 million species, i.e. a working hierarchy for management purposes. This discussion document is intended to highlight some of the issues that need clarifying in order to achieve this goal beyond what we presently have. Concerning Classification Life’s diversity is classified into a hierarchy of categories. The best-known of these is the Kingdom. When Carl Linnaeus introduced his new “system of nature” in the 1750s ― Systema Naturae per Regna tria naturae, secundum Classes, Ordines, Genera, Species …) ― he recognised three kingdoms, viz Plantae, Animalia, and a third kingdom for minerals that has long since been abandoned. As is evident from the title of his work, he introduced lower-level taxonomic categories, each successively nested in the other, named Class, Order, Genus, and Species. The most useful and innovative aspect of his system (which gave rise to the scientific discipline of Systematics) was the use of the binominal, comprising genus and species, that uniquely identified each species of organism. Linnaeus’s system has proven to be robust for some 250 years. The starting point for botanical names is his Species Plantarum, published in 1753, and that for zoological names is the tenth edition of the Systema Naturae published in 1758. -

ABSTRACT Acute toxicity tests of five metals (aluminum, cadmium, iron, lead, zinc) were performed to determine LC50 values in two species of freshwater rotifers: Asplanchna brigthwellii and its prey Brachionus calyciflorus. We conducted the tests using neonates less than 24 hr-old, each test consisted of five replicates, negative control and five metal concentrations (Al, Cd, Fe, Pb, Zn). We found that the prey rotifer B. calyciflorus was more sensitive to Al, Cd, Pb and Fe than the predator rotifer A. brightwellii. For both rotifers Cd was the most toxic of the five metals. It was established that the strain of B. ca- lyciflorus studied is sensitive when compared with other B. calyciflorus strains and other species and genera of the family Brachionidae. In the other hand, LC50 values of A. brigthwellii are compared with rotifer and copepod predators. Key words: Acute toxicity, aquatic toxicology, LC50, metal toxicity, trophic interactions. The biodiverse Rotifera of northeast India (NEI) revealed 303 species belonging to 53 genera and 24 families; ~96% of these species examined from seven states of NEI affirm the rotifer heterogeneity of our plankton and semi-plank- ton collections. This study documents the record number of species of global and regional biogeographic interest, high- lights affinity with Southeast Asian and Australian faunas, and indicates notable heterogeneity in richness and composition amongst the seven northeastern states. The speciose rotifers of small lentic biotopes of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura, the floodplain lakes beels( ) and small wetlands (dobas and dubies) of the Brahmaputra and the Barak floodplains of Assam, and the floodplain lakes (pats) of Manipur are noteworthy. Deepor Beel and Loktak Lake (two Ramsar sites) are the globally rich rotifer `hotspots’. Interesting assemblages per sample of 80+ species in certain beels and pats, and up to 50 species in dobas and dubies depict the `Rotifera paradox’. -

Schmitt Abstract The serotonergic nervous systems of two non-colonial species of Conochilus were examined to obtain the first immunohistochemical insights into the neuroanatomy of species of Flosculariacea (Rotifera, Monogononta). Species of Conochilus, subgenus Conochiloides, were examined using serotonin (5-HT) immunohistochemistry, epifluorescence and confocal laser scanning microscopy, and 3D computer imaging software. In specimens of C. coenobasis and C. dossuarius, the serotonergic nervous system is defined by a dorsal cerebral ganglion, apically directed cerebral neurites, and paired nerve cords. The cerebral ganglion contains approximately four pairs of small 5-HT- immunoreactive perikarya; one pair innervates the posterior nerve cords and three pairs innervate the apical field. The most dorsal pair innervates a coronal nerve ring that encircles the apical field. Within the apical field is a second nerve ring that outlines the inner border of the coronal cilia. Together, both the inner and outer nerve rings may function to modulate ciliary activity of the corona. The other two pairs of perikarya innervate a region around the mouth. Specific differences in the distribution of serotonergic neurons between species of Conochilus and previously examined ploimate rotifers include the following: (a) a lack of immunoreactivity in the mastax; (b) a greater number of apically directed serotonergic neurites; and (c) a complete innervation of the corona in both species of Conochilus. -
New Records of 13 Rotifers Including Bryceella Perpusilla Wilts Et Al., 2010 and Philodina Lepta Wulfert, 1951 from Korea

Thirteen species belonging to nine genera in five families of monogonont and bdelloid rotifers were identified: Bryceella perpusilla Wilts, Martinez Arbizu and Ahlrichs, 2010, Collotheca ornata (Ehrenberg, 1830), Habrotrocha flava Bryce, 1915, H. pusilla (Bryce, 1893), Macrotrachela aculeata Milne, 1886, M. plicata (Bryce, 1892), Mniobia montium Murray, 1911, M. tentans Donner, 1949, Notommata cyrtopus Gosse, 1886, Philodina lepta Wulfert, 1951, P. tranquilla Wulfert, 1942, Pleuretra hystrix Bartoš, 1950 and Proalinopsis caudatus (Collins, 1873). All these rotifers are new to Korea, and B. perpusilla, H. flava, M. montium, P. caudatus, P. hystrix and P. lepta are new to Asia as well. Of interest, the present study is the first to record B. perpusilla outside its type locality. In addition, P. lepta has previously been recorded from only three European countries. Seven taxa are new to the fauna of Ukraine: Chaetonotus (Hystricochaetonotus) hystrix, Chaetonotus (Primochaetus) heideri, Chaetonotus (Zonochaeta) bisacer, Lepidodermella minor minor, Lepidodermella squamata, Ichthydium maximum and Haltidytes festinans. This investigation gives an additional morphological information on Chaetonotus (Chaetonotus) maximus and Chaetonotus (Hystricochaetonotus) macrochaetus, which have been earlier reported to the Ukraine fauna but currently they recorded in Kharkiv Region for the first time. Introduction Gastrotricha Metschnikoff, 1865 are minute vermiform, acoelomate invertebrates. Metschnikoff classified these organisms as a Phylum (Metschnikoff, 1865) but some present investigations defined this group as a clade of Lophotrochozoa (Hejnol, 2015). Gastrotrichs are cosmopolitic species and can be found in all aquatic environments (Balsamo et al., 2008). However, we receive information about new species for science every year. In the sea gastrotrichs can rank third in abundance after nematodes and harpacticoid and in freshwater habitats they are among the top five most common taxa encountered. -

Current knowledge regarding freshwater gastrotrichs inhabiting caves is extremely poor and there are no extant data regarding Gastrotricha from Montenegro. We describe a new species from Obodska Cave, which is also the fi rst record of a gastrotrich from this region. Due to its unusual habitat and morphological characteristics, this species may be important when considering the evolution and dispersion routes of Chaetonotidae Gosse, 1864 (sensu Leasi & Todaro 2008). -

To date, 402 species of rotifers have been recorded from Mexico, besides a few infraspecific taxa such as subspecies and varieties. The rotifers from Mexico represent 27 families and 75 genera. Molecular analysis showed about 20 cryptic taxa from species complexes. The genera Lecane, Trichocerca, Brachionus, Lepadella, Cephalodella, Keratella, Ptygura, and Notommata accounted for more than 50% of all species recorded from the Mexican territory. The diversity of rotifers from the different states of Mexico was highly heterogeneous. Only five federal entities (the State of Mexico, Michoacán, Veracruz, Mexico City, Aguascalientes, and Quintana Roo) had more than 100 species. Extrapolation of rotifer species recorded from Mexico indicated the possible occurrence of more than 600 species in Mexican water bodies, hence more sampling effort is needed. In the current review, we also comment on the importance of seasonal sampling in enhancing the species richness and detecting exotic rotifer taxa in Mexico.
