Television Dramas Have Increasingly Reinforced a Picture of British Politics As ‘Sleazy’

These dramas increasingly reinforced a picture of British politics as ‘sleazy’ and were apt to be believed by many already cynical viewers as representing the truth. Steven Fielding argues that political scientists need to look more closely at how culture is shaping the public’s view of party politics. On the evening of 28th February 2007, 4.5 million ITV viewers saw Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott receive a blowjob. Thankfully, they did not see the real Prescott on the screen but instead actor John Henshaw who played him in Confessions of a Diary Secretary. Moreover, the scene was executed with some discretion: shot from behind a sofa all viewers saw was the back of the Deputy Prime Minister’s head. Prescott’s two-year adulterous affair with civil servant Tracey Temple had been splashed across the tabloids the year before and ITV had seen fit to turn this private matter into a broad comedy, one which mixed known fact with dramatic invention. Confessions of a Diary Secretary is just one of twenty-four television dramas produced about New Labour which I discuss in my new article in the British Journal of Politics and International Relations. Some of these dramas were based on real events, others elliptically referenced the government and its personnel; but all made, I argue, a unique contribution to public perceptions of politics. -

American Heritage Day DEAR PARENTS, Each year the elementary school students at Valley Christian Academy prepare a speech depicting the life of a great American man or woman. The speech is written in the first person and should include the character’s birth, death, and major accomplishments. Parents should feel free to help their children write these speeches. A good way to write the speech is to find a child’s biography and follow the story line as you construct the speech. This will make for a more interesting speech rather than a mere recitation of facts from the encyclopedia. Students will be awarded extra points for including spiritual application in their speeches. Please adhere to the following time limits. K-1 Speeches must be 1-3 minutes in length with a minimum of 175 words. 2-3 Speeches must be 2-5 minutes in length with a minimum of 350 words. 4-6 Speeches must be 3-10 minutes in length with a minimum of 525 words. Students will give their speeches in class. They should be sure to have their speeches memorized well enough so they do not need any prompts. Please be aware that students who need frequent prompting will receive a low grade. Also, any student with a speech that doesn’t meet the minimum requirement will receive a “D” or “F.” Students must portray a different character each year. One of the goals of this assignment is to help our children learn about different men and women who have made America great. Help your child choose characters from whom they can learn much. -

Vorwort Die Einleitung zu dieser Arbeit möchte ich mit einem Beispiel aus Jane Martindales Artikel „Eleanor of Aquitaine and a „Queenly Court“?“ beginnen. Sie spricht von Richard Löwenherz und seiner Darstellung in den Quellen seiner Zeit. Er wird mit Alexander dem Großen und König Arthur verglichen, er ist der Held der romantischen höfischen Dichtung. Dies ist natürlich nicht die Realität seines Lebens, aber man kann die fast schon legendäre Reputation erkennen, die Richard bereits zu Lebzeiten genoss. Abgesehen davon ist er der Inbegriff des Ritterideals und diese Art der Darstellung war seiner Rolle als König nur zuträglich. Die Unterscheidung zwischen Fiktion und Realität wird allerdings viel schwieriger, wenn es um Geschichten geht, die sich um eine Frau ranken. -

LOUISE BOURGEOIS American, French born (1911 - 2010) The Blind Leading The Blind 1947 - 49, painted wood 70⅜ × 96⅞ × 17⅜ in. Regents Collections Acquisition Program with Match- ing Funds from the Jerome L. Greene, Agnes Gund, Sydney and Frances Lewis, and Leonard C. Yaseen Purchase Fund, 1989 Living in New York during the mid 1940s, when World War II cut her off from friends and family in France, Louise Bourgeois created vertical wood sculptures that she exhibited as loosely grouped, solitary figures. These objects represented sorely missed people and her own loneliness and isolation in America. In 1948, Bourgeois made the first of five variations of The Blind Leading The Blind as pairs of legs which, unable to stand alone, were bound together for strength by lintel like boards. The figures appear to walk tentatively on tiptoe under the boards, the weight of which presses down on the individual pairs even as it holds them togeth- er as an uneasy collective. One of the artist’s most abstract works, this sculpture takes on an anthropomorphic presence by resting directly on the floor and sharing the viewer’s space. In 1949, after being called before the House Un-American Activities Commit- tee, Bourgeois named the series The Blind Leading the Blind. The title paraphras- es Jesus’s description of the hypocritical Pharisees and scribes (Matthew 15:14): “Let them alone, they are blind guides. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.” Exposing the folly of untested belief, unscrutinized ritual, and regimented thinking, the parable has been used as a subject by other artists. -
Coventry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
Coventry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is the national record of people who have shaped British history, worldwide, from the Romans to the 21st century. The Oxford DNB (ODNB) currently includes the life stories of over 60,000 men and women who died in or before 2017. Over 1,300 of those lives contain references to Coventry, whether of events, offices, institutions, people, places, or sources preserved there. Of these, over 160 men and women in ODNB were either born, baptized, educated, died, or buried there. Many more, of course, spent periods of their life in Coventry and left their mark on the city’s history and its built environment. This survey brings together over 300 lives in ODNB connected with Coventry, ranging over ten centuries, extracted using the advanced search ‘life event’ and ‘full text’ features on the online site (www.oxforddnb.com). The same search functions can be used to explore the biographical histories of other places in the Coventry region: Kenilworth produces references in 229 articles, including 44 key life events; Leamington, 235 and 95; and Nuneaton, 69 and 17, for example. Most public libraries across the UK subscribe to ODNB, which means that the complete dictionary can be accessed for free via a local library. Libraries also offer 'remote access' which makes it possible to log in at any time at home (or anywhere that has internet access). Elsewhere, the ODNB is available online in schools, colleges, universities, and other institutions worldwide.
