UNC-TV presents a remarkable documentary from a first-time filmmaker, Reidsville’s Jordan Nance. Broadcast: A Man & His Dream, premiering Thursday, February 19, at 10 PM, tells the story of celebrated broadcaster Ralph Epperson, who started Mount Airy’s legendary WPAQ radio station in 1948 to promote The late Ralph Epperson (L) the string band music shares stories with Jordan Nance. native to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Now, some 65 years later, 740 AM remains known for its bluegrass , old time, gospel and Christian music, drawing special acclaim for its live perfor mances featuring some of the brightest names in roots music.

The show’s title, Broadcast: A Man & His Dream, applies equally well to the 29-year-old Nance as it does to his documentary. Living with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy since birth, Nance and his parents traveled throughout the region collecting priceless interviews featured in his film, including one from 2006 with Epperson taped just six weeks before his death. After years of gathering material, in early 2012 Nance enlisted the assistance of Wilmington film pro Beth Crookham One( Tree Hill) and others to finish the film.

This realization of Nance’s longtime dream pays tribute to Epperson and the early days of WPAQ through more than four dozen interviews and original recordings with some 15 old- time music pioneers, including Benton Flippen, LW Lambert, Dewey Murphy and Russell Easter. Be sure to catch this inspiring film.

BEHIND THE SCREEN… MEET STEVE VOLSTAD

This month we spotlight a friendly face, and one familiar to many viewers, especially during FESTIVAL and similar fundraisers—UNC-TV’s Director of Communications and Marketing Steve Volstad. Steve typically writes these “Behind the Screen” vignettes of interesting UNC-TV staff members, but he was on vacation, so we thought we’d turn the tables a bit and let you know more about our longtime Steve Volstad (L) spokesperson.

This Aurora, CO, native often found himself under the gun, well, a starting gun, running on the Hinkley High Thunderbirds track team. After high school, Steve next ran off to the University of Colorado at Boulder where he was a bit of a big man on campus, as you can tell by his thoughtful appearance reviewing colleague Lew Ruggiero’s copy in the image above. While immersed in college journalism at the Colorado Daily and serving as a wire service “stringer,” Steve won a pair of William Randolph Hearst Foundation awards for his news writing. After graduating from UC-Boulder’s School of Journalism, Steve got on a bit of a power trip, litera lly, working in public relations and managing corporate relations for power companies in Colorado and Nevada.

In 1995, with wife, June, and son, Sam, Steve moved to North Carolina to manage C arolina Power & Light’s Customer Communications. Four years later, he finally saw the light and joined UNC-TV as our Director of Communications and Marketing. His work doesn’t just require a smart noggin, it also takes a cool head and Steve is a master of diplomacy. His wor k entails crafting corporate communications, modernizing our modes of communication and seeking novel ways to spread the good news of UNC-TV’s many productions, programs an d services. He’s equally at ease dealing with elected officials, corporate CEOs, media stars as he is with the many volunteers and fans of UNC-TV he meets during our fundraisers and sta tewide events. When he’s not busy guiding the UNC-TV network’s positioning or pl otting promotional opportunities, Steve spends time with his family and friends and is an avid fantasy footballer. After more than 16 years at the helm of UNC-TV’s Communications department, it’s no wonder that Steve is affectionately addressed as “Captain” by members of his staff, present and past.

As Steve says, “Being the subject of this month’s staff profile comes as a rather unsettling surprise—especially that fading photograph of some vaguely familiar youth. But all of that aside, it has been my privilege to work with wonderful people doing wonderful work for the people of North Carolina. UNC-TV people love and genuinely believe in what we do. Not everybody gets to be in a place like that, so I count my blessings every day. And one of them is that I get to go back to writing these articles instead of being in them!”
