CPFJ 2017 FALL CONCERT SERIES #3: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12th - 3PM MOTHER GOOSE AND OTHER TALES - A CONCERT FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES! JONATHAN RAGONESE The Central PA Friends of Jazz and Messiah College’s Music Department present a unique jazz presentation of Jonathan’s Jazz Quintet and chamber jazz compositions with woodwind ensemble, harp and narrator.

Dr. William Stowman will lead the Messiah College Jazz Ensemble to open the program. The concert includes a cast of New York's finest young musicians including Grammy-nominated artist Patrick Bartley on alto saxophone, Sunnyside recording artist Glenn Zaleski on piano, bassist Martin Nevin and drummer Mark Whitfield Jr. The affterrnoon’s closing chamber jazz compositions include the world premiere of Uncle Wiggly & Mr. Pop-Goes - narrator Michael Greenwald , well known WITF Public Radio/TV personality, takes us on a journey through a wild tale of balloons, foxes, and a weasel who's up to no good. Ending the evening is a set of six more narrated tales comprising the Mother Goose Suite. Messiah College music students will perform as part of a wind ensemble for the orchestrated works with Jim Colonna conducting. . The event will be held in the magnificent Parmer Hall in the High Center at Messiah College - one of the most spectacular music performance facilities in our region. Please encourage your young friends to attend this concert - children under 12 can attend for free and the student price is $10. Jonathan is a native of New Cumberland, PA. He moved to New York City in 2007 to attend the Manhattan School of Music and has lived and worked there since. He has performed and recorded with Steve Wilson, David Liebman, the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, and Tim Warfield. As a composer his works have been commissioned and premiered by saxophonist Steve Wilson, Jazz @ Lincoln Center, The Museum of Modern Art, the New York Film Festival, the Harrisburg Symphony, The Righteous Girls, Bucknell University, West Chester University and the Harrisburg Youth Symphony. In 2014 Ragonese premiered his ‘Not-this’ for two saxophones at Carnegie Hall. Jonathan is an active educator, with lectures, writings, and the development of "Music Before Words", a music program for infants with educator Renee Bock. His first recording, Ardent Marigolds , was released in 2013, a duo with musical father Steve Rudolph. 2017 brings two new releases and many premieres. . The Composer's notes on the new compositions: In the time leading up to the year 2011, I had experienced a great affair with dramatic music. I had, since I began a life in music, been focused deeply on improvisation and the history of Jazz music in America. My exposure to ballet and opera opened an entirely new vista that, at the age of 22 I was particularly enthralled by. My newfound love of composition had begun to crystallize in the two years prior, and that spring I decided that I should write a new work that might allow me to investigate this world of dramatic story-telling. I wrote Mother Goose Suite to find new areas of exploration for the improvisers that I knew and loved, to bring aboard the chamber and orchestral musicians that had shown me what it meant to 'be a composer' into the world of improvisation that was so close to my heart, and to give a platform to the witty, effortless, and never-ending humor of my closest mentor Dr. David Noon. Featuring six nursery rhymes from Mother Goose, it is a through-composed work that allows the improviser to bring to life the many facets of each rhyme. After many years of discussion, many more pieces, and a large period of growth, thanks to the help and support of Tim Warfield and Steve Rudolph, Mother Goose is heard again. When contemplating what it meant to bring the work back to life, I realized that a concert would not be complete without one other piece to pair with Mother Goose. So as a way of connecting the dots, and diving back in to the wonderful world of narration, I set out to find a new story to bring to life. After much searching (skimming nearly thousands of stories and poems) I came across an interesting American author from the early 20th century, Howard Garis. From what I could tell, Howard was the type of author that woke up everyday and wrote from dawn till night, having in his career over seventeen series each with tomes of episodes and editions. A particularly interesting creative knack was that of creating the character 'Uncle Wiggly Longears'. Whether for pure joy, or insurance for never-ending creative material (he wrote 15,000 stories for the rabbit), Garis has Uncle Wiggly travel into other well-loved and famous children's tales, with each chapter resulting in a new scenario with a character from that tale. Uncle Wiggly finally encounters Mother Hubbard, and this is where Mr. Pop-Goes comes in. I took the original story and adapted it for my purposes of a musically narrative work; and also, as I did with Mother Goose, to bring it 'up to speed'. . My life as a teacher - with children as small as two months, to seventy years of age- has inspired and solidified in me a never-ending relation- ship with wonder. And my life as a musician has brought me ever closer to how positive and overwhelming the principle of participation can be for a group of people. A creative life is a wide-open journey, and it is with these pieces that I hope a few seemingly disparate things, may collide. 4. THE CENTRAL PA FRIENDS OF JAZZ AND MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY’S WARE CENTER JOIN FORCES TO PRESENT THE BEST IN JAZZ! A legendary staple in the fabric of jazz, San Francisco based singer and HighNote recording artist MARY STALLINGS' bio reads like a Who's Who of jazz greats and prestigious festivals. For nearly half a century, listeners have enjoyed the silky, long-tone stylings of a woman of whom the New York Times says, “…perhaps the best jazz singer singing today…”.

Central PA Friends of Jazz Spring Concert Series - MARCH 25, 2018 3PM Ware Center, 42 N Prince St. Lancaster, PA Tickets are $25

Mary Stallings is a classic example of how it takes time, musical seasoning and living a full life to mature as a vocalist and to address a lyric properly. While youthful instrumentalists may have something to say, Stallings brings a lifetime of emotional intelligence that enables her to truly inhabit a lyric. Born and raised in San Francisco, the middle child of 11 siblings, Stallings started performing professionally before the age of 10 with her mother and two older sisters in a family gospel group. She got her first real taste of jazz at home, sitting in at rehearsals with her uncle, tenor saxophonist and bandleader Orlando Stallings. Mary’s career got off to an early start in the late ’50s and her supple voice landed her in rarified air: performing with such luminaries as , , , and the Montgomery brothers (Wes, Monk, and Buddy) in Bay Area night clubs. Perhaps Stallings’ best-known recording was the 1961 Cal Tjader Plays, Mary Stallings Sings which brought engagements in , and along with work up and down the West Coast. She spent a year in the late 1960s performing with , and toured South America with Gillespie’s band in 1965 & 1966. She has shared the bill with Joe Williams, Tony Bennett, Clark Terry, and Ella Fitzgerald and she enjoyed a successful three-year residency in the from ‘69-’72. After touring with the Basie orchestra, she devoted her time to raising her only child, R&B singer Adriana Evans. Stallings returned to full-time singing in the early 1980s and released I Waited for You on in 1990 with pianist . The album Spectrum followed with pianist & trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison, while she featured as the pianist on Manhattan Moods in1997. 2005’s Remember Love featured Geri Allen, who played piano & organ and severd as producer and arranger. Mary Stallings has been a frequent guest at the & the San Francisco Jazz Fest. In 2005 she appeared with Clark Terry at the Blue Note Jazz Club in NYC, the 2007 Savannah Music Festival and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s, “The Birth of Cool.” In 2010, Mary Stallings signed an exclusive agreement with New York-based, HighNote Records and her first recording, Dream (HCD 7212) was released in October of that year. Mary’s second HighNote recording, 2012’s Don’t Look Back, (HCD 7224) had Christopher Loudon proclaiming in JazzTimes magazine, “Stallings and …achieving the same sort of rare, supreme simpatico as Ella and Louis, or Sinatra and Riddle.” Don’t miss this rare appearance by a stellar artist!! 5. Again this year, the Central PA Friends of Jazz will be participating in the Extraordinary Give, sponsored by the Lancaster County Community Foundation, on Friday, November 17. This event allows nonprofit agencies that serve the Lancaster community to participate in the area's largest fundraising event. Last year, EO raised over $10 million -- IN ONE DAY! Mark your calendar for November 17 . The event begins at Midnight and ends at 11:59 pm - a 24 hour window for donating to your favorite charity. You can make donations online at https://extragive.org/ . We'll be providing more details on Facebook and our webpage as the event grows closer.

Last year, CPFJ raised over $1,000. We hope to improve on that amount this year and you can help make that happen - please give generously.

Central PA Friends of Jazz - Track of the Month by Paul Haidet (@myheroistrane)

The Robert Glasper Trio – “So Beautiful” From the Album: Covered: The Robert Glasper Trio Recorded Live at Capitol Studios

Robert Glasper is one of my favorite pianists of the last 15 years. Reunited here with bassist Vincente Archer and drummer Damion Reid from his first two Blue Note recordings, Glasper records live in front of a studio audience in famed Capitol Studio A, site of landmark recordings by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, the Beach Boys, and many others since 1956. The cover of Musiq (Soulchild)’s “So Beautiful” is exactly that – thoroughly modern, paradoxically simple and complex, and emotionally gorgeous. Between Glasper’s sensual touch, Reid’s dancing snare, and Archer’s tasteful fills, you’ll feel the leaves gently falling around you on a crisp fall day. Listen. Feel. Experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GS2Y_CkaXP0 -- Paul Haidet (@myheroistrane) 8. JOIN THE CPFJ YOUTH BAND

Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band almost 30 years ago. Ron Waters is the Director for the CPFJ Youth Band. There is no tuition fee and all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. The band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. All applicants are accepted without audition Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. A professional arranger, composer and trumpet player, he finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, JazzMobile and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interests. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument - cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in previous bands. COME JOIN THE FUN!! Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email at [email protected]
