Fox Nfl Sunday Notes - 12/19/10 FOX NFL SUNDAY NOTES - 12/19/10 Long: Shanahan & Redskins Have Handled McNabb Situation Without Class Glazer Reports with Exclusive Video on Flagrant Foul by Panthers’ Tyler Brayton While NFL Investigates Incident Johnson: Benching McNabb the Right Decision for Redskins ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ FOX NFL Insider Jay Glazer has more details to the Donovan McNabb benching after first reporting last week he was on a short leash: "Despite the fact that Donovan McNabb was efficient in that loss last week, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan was furious and told people that's the last snap he wants to see Donovan take. Early in the week, they intended to bench him and then something changed. I know Dan Snyder was not in the country while all this went down but eventually the younger Shanahan got his way. It was misreported that Donovan McNabb would be the emergency No. 3 quarterback today. He will be the No. 2 quarterback today for the Redskins. Finally I was told by someone in the Redskins organization today that if Rex Grossman stinks today and this doesn't work out, Dan Snyder may change the locks on the coaches’ offices. Snyder is not happy about this." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Analyst Howie Long on the way Mike Shanahan has handled his problems with Donovan McNabb: “Donovan hasn’t played well. He’s been inaccurate. If Mike Shanahan and the Redskins want to move on, fine then move on. I think they have handled this situation, as an organization and as a head coach, without class. Each subsequent explanation that Mike Shanahan gave for sitting McNabb has been disappointing. Donovan deserves better and it’s an organization that typically gives us better.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ NFL on FOX analyst John Lynch, who played for Mike Shanahan as a member of the Denver Broncos, offered: “I played for Shanahan and let me tell you, once you are in his dog house, you’d better get used to staying in there.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Co-host Terry Bradshaw on Mike Shanahan benching Donovan McNabb in favor of Rex Grossman: “It’s unfortunate. The Redskins realized right after they traded for McNabb that is wasn’t going to work because Mike Shanahan didn’t like him. If it was later in Mike Shanahan’s tenure in Washington, I’m sure McNabb would still be playing because he’d be trying to save his job but that’s not the case here.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Analyst Michael Strahan on whether Donovan McNabb has what it takes to still play well in the NFL: “If Rex Grossman can still play in the NFL, McNabb can play in the NFL.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Analyst Jimmy Johnson on Mike Shanahan’s decision to bench McNabb: “ This is the right move. He knows McNabb will not be there next year and he wants to see what he has in his backup quarterbacks.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ FOX NFL Insider Jay Glazer reported and produced exclusive video of another incident last week involving an opposing team's personnel purposely interfering with a gunner: "Everybody knows about Sal Alosi and the Jets but what nobody knows is there are actually two incidents of flagrant fouls on gunners that the NFL is investigating. We’ve got the video. Tyler Brayton of the Carolina Panthers clearly goes from the bench area all the way up to the white line and clearly levels Chris Owens of the Atlanta Falcons with a reverse elbow right to the head. This one is worse than Alosi because there was clear intent. The NFL will level a serious fine on Tyler Brayton." There are some teams who coach that blocking wall and one team said they call it Pink Floyd as in Pink Floyd's album "The Wall." They actually instruct players that if the gunner gets behind them to suddenly break up and walk up the sideline so the gunner can't get back on the field. This is a lot more widespread than people think but it is legal. A head coach that told me this morning that one of his coordinators this year leveled a gunner. Another special teams coach told me that he leveled a gunner. That coach said there are cameras everywhere these days.     Big 12 Conference Schools Raise Nine-Year NFL Draft Totals to 277 Alumni Through 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Apr. 26, 2003 DALLAS—Big 12 Conference teams had 10 of the first 62 selections in the 35th annual NFL “common” draft (67th overall) Saturday and added a total of 13 for the opening day. The first-day tallies in the 2003 NFL draft brought the number Big 12 standouts taken from 1995-03 to 277. Over 90 Big 12 alumni signed free agent contracts after the 2000-02 drafts, and three of the first 13 standouts (six total in the first round) in the 2003 draft were Kansas State CB Terence Newman (fifth draftee), Oklahoma State DE Kevin Williams (ninth) Texas A&M DT Ty Warren (13th). Last year three Big 12 standouts were selected in the top eight choices (four of the initial 21), and the 2000 draft included three alumni from this conference in the first 20. Colorado, Nebraska and Florida State paced all schools nationally in the 1995-97 era with 21 NFL draft choices apiece. Eleven Big 12 schools also had at least one youngster chosen in the eight-round draft during 1998. Over the last six (1998-03) NFL postings, there were 73 Big 12 Conference selections among the Top 100.     Drafting the Best Future NFL Quarterback Decision Making in a Complex Environment Final Project Nick Besh Steve Ellis October 18, 2004 Anyone who has followed the NFL draft knows that drafting a Quarterback in the first round is a hit or miss proposition. Successful college prospects, many who are under classmen fail to go on and have the same success as professionals. There are the “cant- miss” prospects who do go one to become Pro Bowl QB’s, but just as many are total busts. It would appear as if the selection is nothing more than a crap-shoot. Drafting is all about priorities and alternatives. Given that, there must be a way to quantify all of the stats and “gut feelings” of players to select a future NFL star. The description of the NFL draft problem would appear to be a perfect candidate for a complex ratings model using the SuperDecisions software. Analyzing the problem further lead us to our stated goal: Optimize a high selection in the NFL draft by drafting a solid contributor to your team, if not a Pro-Bowl caliber player while at the same time avoiding the selection of a player who can set your franchise back years. This is a critical decision that does not leave much room for error. To achieve our goal, thorough research of all the criteria that would need to be considered when drafting a QB would need to be analyzed. This process led us to nine top level criteria: 1 1.
