Amanuel Carl Edwards and Nancy Mathis were married in July 1852 in Spartanburg, SC, where he worked as a foreman on the railroad. He and his family moved to Buncombe County, near Leicester, NC, in February 1870, where he was a farmer and stone mason.

1. Amanuel Carl (A.C.)1 Edwards, born 7 Mar 1830, in Newton, Catawba County, NC or Lincoln County, NC (?), died 21 May 1914, in Leicester (Asheville), Buncombe County, NC. Cause of death: Cancer. He married Nancy Mathis 11 Jul 1852, in Spartanburg County, SC. Nancy Mathis was born 26 Jul 1830, in Spartanburg County, SC, died 24 Apr 1896, in Leicester (Asheville), Buncombe County, NC.
The earliest known Edwards ancestor emigrated from Wales to America in 1610 as an indentured servant. He promised to work seven years and would then receive a mule and some acreage. He settled in Jamestown, Virginia. Amanuel Edwards was a foreman for a railroad in Spartanburg, SC, until the railroad went broke. He and his family moved to Buncombe County near Leicester, NC, on 28 February 1870, where he was a farmer and stone mason(?). He joined the New Found Baptist Church by letter on the third Sunday of March 1870 and later was ordained to the ministry by this church. A.C. Edwards enlisted in the army on 26 October 1861 and served in Company 33 of the Palmetta Battalion SC Light Artillery during the Civil War. He had a lower arm removed at the wrist because of cancer at the age of 75, after which he lived for approximately 10 years. Amanuel could not be found in the 1850 census. In the 1860 census, Manuel, wife Nancy, and children were living in Spartanburg, SC. He was a rock mason with a value of personal estate worth $250. It says that he was born in South Carolina. Emanuel Edwards and wife Nannie, both 40 years old, are listed in the 1870 census as living in Leicester, Buncombe County, NC. He was listed as a farmer. Their children at that time are listed with correct birthdates for them to be A.C. and Nancy. The youngest, Martin, who was 1 year old, was born in South Carolina, so the family must have moved to North Carolina during the previous year. In the 1880 census A.C. and family were living in Leicester, Buncombe County, NC. He was a minister farmer. In the 1900 census, Nancy had died and Emanual was living in Leicester as a farmer. It says that he was born in NC, but both parents were born in South Carolina. He had not been employed for two months and owned his farm free of a mortgage. He was living with Franklin Swaim, his grandson, born in August 1879, who was 20 years old and a farm laborer. He attended 3 months of school. In 1910 Emmanuel was living with his daughter Laura and son-in-law, Noah H. Waldrop, and family. Both A.C. and Nancy are buried at Brick Church Cemetery, New Leicester Highway, just past Green Valley Road, Leicester, NC.

Lee Edwards may have worked for a time for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Family lore indicates that he was very resourceful, and it is unknown how much of it is true. One story has him working for a time in Kansas where he was after mail robbers and murders. Once, he came across a husband beating his wife; he knocked down the husband, after which his wife hit him with a stick and told him not to interfere with family trouble. Evidence is good that he worked in Knoxville, which he thought was beautiful. One story has it that he went to Cowling, IL, from Knoxville, where he met his future wife. Another one holds that he first went to Cowling with cowpunchers from the west with a herd of wild horses.
He was a great storyteller. Lee would get an apple and peel around it with his knife while telling a story. (He was trying to get the peel off in one piece.) After he told a story he would take the crook of his cane and catch one of the children, making him or her scream.
[As told by Wilma Edwards Loga and Esther Ferguson Knutson]: Jennie's ancestors, who were Hugenots, emigrated to America from France, probably in the late 1700s or early 1880s. They settled in what is now Atlantic City, which they found to be unsuitable for farming, so they moved inland.
Jennie was the ninth of twelve children born to John Painter and Frances Ireland. At an unknown time some of them moved to Mount Carmel, Illinois. Jennie married Alfred Durley and they had one son, Amon, born in 1888. After Alfred died in 1891 Jennie moved to Cowling, Illinois, where she met and married Lee Edwards. They ran a general store and Jennie was a seamstress. Five of their six children were born in Illinois. They moved to South Dakota in 1907 where they homesteaded. Viola was born in a dugout on the homestead in 1911. Amon stayed in Illinois, although he and his wife Phoebe did live in South Dakota for a short time, after which they moved back to Illinois.

George Sluder was first married to Lucinda Martin, and they had four children. The youngest two were Julia Maie and Barnard. Lucinda died in 1898. George married Macy Edwards in 1900, who then

Charles served in the Spanish-American war, then he served in the Philippines where he played in the army band. He contracted malaria, returned to the Leicester, NC, then moved to Birmingham, AL where he met and married Anna Kassaw. Her family was from Tennessee and she always spoke German. Charles and Anna moved to Delta, CO, in 1908 (?) where a brother may have lived. In 1911 they moved to Klamath Falls, OR, where they homesteaded. They they moved to Phoenix, OR, where he died from the flu.

Wilhelmenia (Minnie) Louisa Johana Hagenow was born 11 Jul 1893, in Westville, La Porte County, IN, died 26 Jun 1989.
Raymond Edwards obtained his bachelor's degree at Valpraiso University in Indiana, where he met his future wife. He taught school at Hardingrove, SD, and in Indian schools in Fallon, NV, Lovelock, NV, Casa Grande, AZ, and Philadelphia, MS (?). In the late 30s (?) he and his family returned to Tennessee, where he lived for the rest of his life. He worked in the nuclear program at Oak Ridge during WWII. In the late 1940s he made neon signs. Raymond and members of his family were talented musically. He hired musicians and sang at his fiftieth wedding anniversay in 1966. Esther Ferguson Knutson remembers Lee Edwards singing along as her mother, Martha, played the piano. Martha played the piano on many occasions after only one hour of lessons. At the 2005 Edwards reunion Jack Edwards related that his father, John, and his uncles Robert and Frank, played many instruments. They won a contest and performed on the Ed Sullivan radio show (before TV). One of Raymond's brothers taught music in Wyoming. This musical talent has been carried down to many members of the present generations.

Viola was working in the telephone office in Deadwood in 1929 or 1930. She went to dinner with a friend; Potato Creek Johnny was there and ate with them, then paid for their meal. Potato Creek Johnny was famous for finding a 7.75-ounce gold nugget, one of the largest in the world, on his claim on Potato Creek in the northern Black Hills in 1929 (as told by Viola to her daughter Barbara in 1975).
Viola played the piano, mostly by ear. She learned notes by sitting next to her daughter Marilyn and playing along with her. She took organ lessons after her family left home and played at First Lutheran Church after moving to Philip.
Reuben was born at home, which was near Fosterburg, IL. When he was two years old his parents went to the world's fair in St. Louis and left Wesley and him behind with Mrs Ramus. The other children went to the fair. He remembered getting into the chicken house when he was 4-6 years old and getting covered with chicken lice.
On the trip to SD in 1907, the family went from Alton, IL to Chicago on CB&C and then west. Reuben remembered his mother telling him that some other folks were going to South Dakota and that their name was Edwards. Raymond Edwards had broken an arm when he had gotten between two cars. He remembered Leona Edwards singing. They stopped at Brookings to visit his Uncle Ben and Aunt Kate over the week-end.
They arrived in Philip on 14 October 1907 on the train. Wesley and Reuben walked up town from the train. There were a few buildings and wooden sidewalks. They saw their father (John) visiting with someone. He was surprised to see them because he was expecting them to arrive later in the day. They started out by team and wagon that John had borrowed and camped between the Grindstone Buttes that night. They went the rest of the way to the homestead the next day. The claim shack was 14' X 24'. Reuben remembered the roof leaking when it rained all day; pots and pans were everywhere. They moved the beds out from under the drips and stayed in bed all day.
Reuben recalled that the whole family went to Philip to the circus in 1912. They went by team and wagon, and when they arrived the circus tent had blown down. They stayed overnight in the upstairs of the Marietta House, which was 0.5 mile north of where the Courthouse now stands. Reuben slept crossways in bed.
John built his big house in 1930. Reuben bought a tractor in 1920. Roy left in 1921 and got married. Nelson had the cattle. Reuben did the farming from 1926 to 1938. He did custom work with his threshing machine and combine, which he bought in 1928. He bought cattle and sheep and after Nelson left to go to Oregon in 1939 Reuben ran both grain and cattle.

He was also a realtor involved in the sale and ownership of income real estate properties in the Bay area and central valley, CA. 53 ii. John earned his BA from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN, and Ph.D. in biochemistry from Washington State University. He spent his career working at the VA in Louisville, KY, the FDA in Washington, DC, then the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland, where he worked in food chemical safety. He retired to Placerville, CA. In retirement he has sung in a barbershop chorus and quartet and plays duplicate bridge, among other things. 54 iv. Henry served in the Army with the 8th Air Force during World War II. On a bombing run over Bremen, Germany, on 30 March 1945 his B-17 was hit by flak. The plane made a crash landing in a wheat field on the east bank of the Rhine River. The crew members were uninjured, but were immediately captured by German troops and transported to POW camps. He returned to the Rogue Valley after the war where he met Mildred Mellor. They made their home in Medford where he worked at a Buick dealership as a painter for most of his career.

Barbara graduated from George Fox College in Newberg, Oregon, in 1990 at the age of forty-nine. She taught school in Buckland and Ambler, Alaska, for fifteen years. She is now retired and tutors dyslexic children in her home. She and Terry also drive vehicles for Philip Motor Company.
