When Music Connection Began to Compile This Exclusive List, We Not Compiled by MC Senior Editor, Mark Nardone hen Music Connection began to compile this exclusive list, we not only drew upon the Wmagazine’s own resources –– our editorial staff, freelance writers and industry contacts — but via our Weekly Bulletin we invited 70,000 readers to participate. So we want to thank the thousands of respondents who contributed thoughtful and, in many cases, heartfelt nominations. As is the nature of such a list, it was not possible to include all who were deserving of recognition. And we do not expect you will agree with every choice we ultimately made. But this one-of-a- kind list, a result of many hours of deliberation and presented in no particular order regarding an individual’s importance or accomplishment, is composed of people and entities who had an important impact on music and music-makers in 2008. 42 AMP NETWORK • WEEKLY BULLETIN • WEBSITE • DIGITAL EDITION • MAGAZINE • DECEMBER 2008 Shepard Fairey access to a rights. CHAPTER 8 Bohemians Greenwich Village and The Masses Joanna Levin Ever since Rodolphe, Henri Murger's prototypical struggling writer, stood before the grave of Mimi, his lost love and partner in the romance of bohemia, crying, "Oh my youth, it is you that is being buried," la vie boheme has represented a fabled transitional period between youth and mature adulthood in many an individual life, memoir, and Bildungsroman (Seigel 45). Similarly, ever since its inception in the wake of the 1830 Rev olution in France, bohemianism - as a larger subcultural movement has flourished during periods of historical transition. It was in the tumultuous lead-up to the Civil War that la vie boheme first took root in the United States (in a basement beer hall beneath the sidewalks of Broadway and Bleecker and on the pages of the New York Saturday Press), but it was dur ing the 1910s, the decade known for ushering in a host of radical and mod ernist movements, that bohemia assumed its most famous American form in New York City's Greenwich Village.

  • How the Commercialization of American Street Art Marks the End of a Subcultural Movement
SAMO© IS REALLY DEAD1: How the Commercialization of American Street Art Marks the End of a Subcultural Movement Sharing a canvas with an entire city of vandals, a young man dressed in a knit cap and windbreaker balances atop a subway handrail, claiming the small blank space on the ceiling for himself. Arms outstretched, he scrawls his name in loops of black spray paint, leaving behind his distinct tag that reads, “FlipOne.”2 Taking hold in the mid ‘70s, graffiti in New York City ran rampant; young artists like FlipOne tagged every inch of the city’s subway system, turning the cars into scratchpads and the platforms into galleries.3 In broad daylight, aerosolcanyeilding graffiti artists thoroughly painted the Lower East Side, igniting what would become a massive American subculture movement known as street art. Led by the nation’s most economically depressed communities, the movement flourished in the early ‘80s, becoming an outlet of expression for the underprivileged youth of America. Under state law, uncommissioned street art in the United States is an act of vandalism and thereby, a criminal offense.4 As a result of the form’s illegal status, it became an artistic manifestation of rebellion, granting street art an even greater power on account of its uncensored, defiant nature. Demonized for its association with gang violence, poverty, and crime, local governments began cracking down on inner city street art, ultimately waging war upon the movement itself. As American cities worked to reclaim their streets and rid them of graffiti, the movement eventually came to a standstill, giving way to cleaner, more prosperous inner city communities.

  • How to Re-Shine Depeche Mode on Album Covers
Sociology Study, December 2015, Vol. 5, No. 12, 920‐930 D doi: 10.17265/2159‐5526/2015.12.003 DAVID PUBLISHING Simple but Dominant: How to Reshine Depeche Mode on Album Covers After 80’s Cinla Sekera Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze the album covers of English band Depeche Mode after 80’s according to the principles of graphic design. Established in 1980, the musical style of the band was turned from synth‐pop to new wave, from new wave to electronic, dance, and alternative‐rock in decades, but their message stayed as it was: A non‐hypocritical, humanist, and decent manner against what is wrong and in love sincerely. As a graphic design product, album covers are pre‐print design solutions of two dimensional surfaces. Graphic design, as a design field, has its own elements and principles. Visual elements and typography are the two components which should unite with the help of the six main principles which are: unity/harmony; balance; hierarchy; scale/proportion; dominance/emphasis; and similarity and contrast. All album covers of Depeche Mode after 80’s were designed in a simple but dominant way in order to form a unique style. On every album cover, there are huge color, size, tone, and location contrasts which concluded in simple domination; domination of a non‐hypocritical, humanist, and decent manner against what is wrong and in love sincerely. Keywords Graphic design, album cover, design principles, dominance, Depeche Mode Design is the formal and functional features graphic design are line, shape, color, value, texture, determination process, made before the production of and space.

  • Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists.
