Architecture 2013 Fundamentals ASCENT has made several enhancements to its Autodesk Official Training Guides for Autodesk’s 2013 release of software. The first of these enhancements is a greater emphasis on Learning Objectives incorporated into the beginning of each chapter and section. Recognizing the value of the Autodesk® Certified Instructor (ACI) program, these objectives have been enhanced to enable both students and instructors to clearly identify the expected learning outcomes of each module. Secondly, Autodesk Certification exam objectives are now incorporated within the applicable ASCENT training guides. New icons have been added throughout the guides to identify student guide topics related to certification objectives for those who are looking to take the Autodesk Certified Professional Exam. Additionally, users will find a concise mapping document in the Appendix that highlights the exam objectives and where to locate those topics within ASCENT training guides. Also new to ASCENT’s 2013 training guides is the inclusion of a web address through which to download an electronic version of the exercise files, replacing a CD in the book. Moving the exercise files from CD to an online version will prevent issues with misplaced or damaged CD’s, eliminating downtime while waiting for a new CD. The link to the exercise files is clearly indicated at the front of each Autodesk Official Training Guide. Delcam to Show Seven-In-One Demonstration at Matsuura Open House 5 April 2012 Delcam has developed programs in its PowerMILL software for high-speed and five-axis machining to highlight the capabilities of the Matsuura MX-520 five-axis machining centre with a seven-sided part that effectively combines seven demonstrations into one. The part will be machined live during a series of Open House events to be held by Matsuura at its UK headquarters in Coalville, Leicestershire, during April and May. The seven sides of the part are produced with a combination of drilling, 2D and 3D three-axis machining, and positional and continuous five-axis operation. Edgecam Programs Launch Demo For Matsuura 2 April 2012 Matsuura has chosen Edgecam to program their largest 5-Axis machine at its launch demonstration in the UK later this month. The Matsuura MAM72-100H has been designed and built for heavy duty machining of large billets and to process geometrically complex components requiring sustained close tolerance accuracy. A series of ‘Open House’ events at Matsuura’s UK headquarters in Leicestershire will demonstrate how the MAM72-100H partners with the CNC software, Edgecam, to cost effectively machine large parts efficiently and accurately. Edgecam have created a special program incorporating 50% 5-axis simultaneous and 50% prismatic machining. Period from 1 August 2011 to 31 January 2012 First half year 2011/2012 up sharply Operating income: +10.1% Net income: +17.5% Over the first half of the 2011/2012 financial period, consolidated turnover for the IGE+XAO Group is up 3.8%, amounting to 11,264,268 euros compared to 10,853,145 euros one year earlier. This growth is in line with the favourable trend that was observed over the 2010/2011 financial period and confirms the renewed dynamism in the SME-SMI market, in France in particular. Over this period, commercial activity moreover benefitted from the positive impacts of the launching, at the end of 2011, of new versions of the Group's flagship products, including substantial innovations pertaining to "collaborative engineering" as well as new user interfaces combining user-friendliness and performance. From a profitability standpoint, the Group's operating income amounted to 2,808,288 euros, up 10.1% compared to the first half of 2010/2011, which is an operating margin* of 24.9%. This growth can be explained by the level of activity as well as by the quality of the IGE+XAO's economic model. Finally, net income stands at 2,259,774 euros (+17.5%), which is a net margin** of 20.1%. From a financial standpoint, IGE+XAO is solidly structured with, at 31 January 2012, equity of 21 million euros, almost no bank debt and a cash flow of nearly 20 million euros. Infor Announces Equity Investment and Financing 5 April 2012 Infor announced an equity investment from Golden Gate Capital and Summit Partners and the successful refinancing of the company's debt capital structure. The transaction completes the combination of Infor and Lawson Software - solidifying Infor's position as the world's third-largest enterprise software company. Combined with the recent equity investment in Lawson, more than $1 billion of new equity has been invested in Infor in the past year. Additionally, Infor refinanced its debt capital structure, reducing total debt by more than $600 million and extending debt financing with an average maturity date of 2018. Infor now generates $2.8 billion in annual revenue and profit margins of more than 28 percent. The company's scale, growth trajectory and leadership position allow for accelerated innovation and increased value for its customers. "The new financing and finalized business combination represent a strategic milestone that sets Infor on a clear path of long-term growth and sustained financial strength," said Charles Phillips, CEO of Infor. Delcam’s FeatureCAM Leads to Solar-Powered Success 4 April 2012 Delcam’s feature-based machining software, FeatureCAM, is being used by Southwest Solar Technologies in Arizona to develop prototypes for a novel solar power generation system that could overcome the problems presented by other systems. “Photovoltaic-panel systems produce only intermittent power when the sun is available, while steam turbine-based technology requires large quantities of water, a particular concern in arid regions,” explained SST Founder and Chief Technical Officer, Herb Hayden. “At SST we are working to engineer a highly efficient and durable Concentrating Solar Power technology that will solve these problems.” The company’s TurboSolar Power System consumes minimal water and other environmental resources while generating grid-ready energy from the sun. SST comprises a small team that consists of a number of engineers across several disciplines - including electrical, mechanical and software engineering. Its leadership team includes experts from all of the industries required to bring a start-up company from inception to a viable entity. It started with Mr. Hayden, a recognised expert and advocate of solar energy. He spent more than 15 years directing the solar research and development programme for Arizona Public Service. The TurboSolar Power System combines a solar-concentrating dish with a purpose-built gas turbine engine. Early last September, SST announced the successful on-sun testing and proof of concept of the system. Zoltan Farkas, design engineer, does most of the programming to machine the unique parts needed by

It is an intuitive software package and, when you are building products with holes, pockets and 3D surfaces in an R&D environment, there is no quicker way to do this than with the Delcam package.” Paul Thomas, electrical engineer for the company, had to learn FeatureCAM the hard way when Mr. Farkas was fully occupied with producing components. “I needed to see what the tools would do in a simulation and, when I came to Zoltan and told him what I wanted to do, he was so busy that he handed me the discs and told me to go for it,” Mr. Thomas remembered. He was up and running as a new FeatureCAM user, with no training, on his own in just a couple of days. “I like the fact that you can change posts quickly, and that you can modify the post-processor to put out custom g-codes for a different machine so easily,” Mr. Farkas added. “When you are in a start-up environment, machining, designing and bringing products to market has to happen yesterday. FORAN in the New Jack-Up Barge Crane Built in Drydocks World - Dubai 26 April 2012 FORAN was the CAD/CAM used by Drydocks World - Dubai in the development of the engineering of the new jack-up barge crane, called SEP – SAMRAT. Drydocks World - Dubai, the flagship company from the Dubai World Corporation, is about to complete the production documentation and construction of the new vessel for specific offshore building duties. The vessel is a non-propelled self-elevating platform, with a total lifting capacity of almost 2,950 tons, through the help of four legs and the corresponding jacking system. It is also equipped with a central main crane and auxiliary systems, such as mooring winches, diesel generators, hydraulic power packs and transfer pumps. All the production drawings have been obtained with the in-house engineering capability, comprising highly skilled personnel and the latest CAD/CAM solutions in the market, being the FORAN System the main toolset. From the initial design to the final production drawing, FORAN ensures a seamless and comprehensive design environment, where every single component is fully integrated in the 3D product model. With a length overall of 49.5 m, a breadth of 25 m and a draft of 2.5 m, the offshore barge is classified by Bureau Veritas, with class I + HULL + MACH, Offshore Self-Elevating Unit, Special Service / Construction Works, Indian Coastal – Summer Zone Transit, + ALM. One important characteristic to be mentioned is the led height of 60 m. The elevating spuds, which are pipe sections with 2.2 m of outer diameter and 45 mm of thickness, are actuated individually by a hydraulic jacking system, each of them capable of 1,055 tons of lifting force. The main crane is a Manitowoc 1800, with a rated capacity of 600 tons and a boom length of 97.5m. There are two generators, rated 335 kW each one, and an emergency one rated 130 kVA, and the mooring is ensured by means of six winches, each one rated 25 tons of pulling force. The Bova Corporation produces sheet metal kitchens for organisations supplying food to the general

Head of Engineering Matt Bova says: “We do everything from basic wall shelves to full-blown serving lines incorporating the wiring and plumbing. We provide a turnkey operation for any aspect of kitchen ranges, mainly in stainless steel, with some components in galvanized steel and aluminum.” They also manufacture laboratory equipment, stainless steel casework, counter tops and wall cabinets. Typically, The Bova Corporation works from drawings provided by consultants and architects. “We take the plan view drawings and specifications of how the equipment should look, then lay out all the cabinetry and counter tops in Autodesk Inventor.” Once the CAD is completed they are ready for CAM to prepare the parts for cutting on their Mazak Super Turbo X510 Hi-Pro laser. And that’s where the Radan CNC software comes in, with two macros written by the Radan team especially for Bova. The Inventor file is imported straight into Radan using the first unique macro. It takes a Bill of Materials file from the kitchen drawing, putting all the parts directly into Radan’s nest schedule editor. “This is invaluable to us because it dramatically reduces the time needed to process the parts from engineering to the shop floor. What was taking us two or three hours, now takes less than an hour.” He says it also gives them confidence that everything will be 100% accurate. “Before the macro, human error meant we sometimes had issues with parts being skipped, quantities getting confused, and wrong materials and thicknesses. But now when I import CSV data into Radan from Inventor a project file is automatically created, populating the nest schedule with all the parts in the Bill of Materials – materials, quantities and gauges.” Radan’s nesting capabilities have improved Bova’s material utilization by around 25%. And a second macro written by the Radan team kicks in at the nesting stage. Each nested part is given a label that prints out on a label maker, which Matt Bova says has helped them ten-fold. “Once the nests are created Radan launches the label macro in Microsoft Word. Previously we had to write on each part with markers to label everything for assembly. Now we just peel the label off the sheet and stick it on the part. That’s helped us pick up more time.” The simulation program is instrumental in preventing mistakes. “It shows that our cutting paths will be successful without us having to guess, taking away the need for trial and error and stopping material being wasted. This makes it invaluable for prototyping – and 95% of our work is bespoke so we do a lot of prototyping – as we can guarantee everything’s going to be right before we start cutting metal.” Being able to program offline with Radan means the laser is cutting one job while a CNC program is being produced for another one. “It keeps the machine operator busy at the same time as the programmer in the office.” And a staggered start means even more efficiencies: “Typically, a programmer will start an hour earlier than the operator, to Radan all the parts and load up the laser with the parts that need to be cut. When the machine operator comes in everything’s ready for production to start, and the programmer moves on to the next job.” Matt Bova says Radan allows them to produce customised, bespoke products, but still have what he calls “normalcy” in the way they work. “And the two macros have given us new abilities and taken us to new levels in processing and turning out high quality parts on a very fast basis. Radan saves us hours every day – we couldn’t do what we do without it. It’s become an absolutely integral part of our manufacturing process.”

Automation of Assembly Quality Control: Noomeo and Kineo CAM to Cooperate April 2012 Noomeo and Kineo CAM announce their collaboration to develop a solution for automatic control of the quality of mechanical assemblies. Nowadays, most products that surround us are designed with computer-aided design (CAD) software. Resulting digital models (CAD models) are then used for the development of means of production that will enable the manufacture of parts. One major difficulty is then to ensure that the result of production conforms to the original design. Non Destructive Testing (NDT) is a set of methods and techniques of perception and action implemented to

The origins of manufacturing errors are numerous: poor adjustment of machinery, tool wear but also, human operator errors when performing manual assembly, or when preparing machining or assembly performed by machines or robots. In this context, Noomeo and Kineo CAM are collaborating to develop a solution called CAAMVis aiming at automating the quality control of mechanical assemblies by Artificial Vision. No learning phase is required other than loading the CAD model and identification of control points. Time savings are even greater when production lines must adapt to frequent configuration changes. The assembly is inspected by the CAAMVis control system whose architecture consists of a robot arm equipped with a 2D/3D vision sensor, software for image processing and automatic comparison with stored digital models and software for automatic computation of 3D control sequences that are executed by the robot. LEDAS Assists STANKIN to Develop a New 3D Modeling Kernel 3 April 2012 When STANKIN won the tender to develop Russia’s own 3D modeling kernel, it subsequently subcontracted R&D work to a number of Russian IT companies. One part of the 3D kernel will be developed by LEDAS Ltd of Novosibirsk. The contract from the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Industry and Trade is for an original, Russia- licensable software kernel for 3D modeling. STANKIN is the popular name for the Moscow State Technological University, which is under the Federal Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education in Russia. Three-dimensional modeling kernels are sets of software components upon which computer-aided design (CAD) and engineering software is written. Developing a new 3D kernel is an extremely complex task, because it requires mobilizing diverse disciplines in fields such as mathematics and information technology. The new kernel will be the basis of a new generation of software for design, reverse engineering, production planning, and technical documentation. It will allow speedy development of innovative products by Russian firms, allowing them to be competitive in the global market, and will become a part of the national technological basis
